So, I do t look at failed 2-point conversions as special team failures; those are on the offense. Musgrave should be able to dial-up a two yard play. Also, Chase’s scramble yards I attribute as passing game success (unless it’s a designed run). As Chase goes through his progressions, his last one is the scramble/run when all else is not there. And I thought he did a damn good job.
Numbers 3 and 5 PLUS the move to take the XP off the board and go for 2.
I like to understand the critical moments in games and think that often to much focus is placed on later stages of the game like Q4 or some unsuccessful drive in the final 3 minutes.
First of all, having 12 points in Q1 for 2 TDs is unacceptable. Chasing points when ahead seems foolish. Keep the XP. Then you don't have to go for 2 later. So it turns out we lose by 2 but actually had 18 points on 3 TDs due to no conversion on that last TD. Take easy XPs when you have the opportunity. Missing the FG is not the problem. Could have even missed an XP and still had 2 points instead of 0.
Good teams score on the final drive of the 1st half. Stats show this. It's a Rodgers specialty. The next best thing to not scoring at the end of the 1st half is not letting the other guys score. This is where points 3 and 5 come in. Not a big fan of the 3rd and 2 long effort going after their best CB. WTAF. Even a stuffed run forces them to take a TO. We saw how well option plays worked. Even a TE throw over the middle would be better. That play led to the final TCU first half TD, and I think that's when the DOOOOOM started to sink in.
Towards the end of Q2 and definitely in the second half that the guys were gassed from the heat and humidity. Not sure how much rotation was going on, but I think a better approach is to get those going immediately so your best players have quality legs in Q4.
Anyway, frustrating. These guys played hard and deserve better than this. 18 points on 3 TDs is nonsense.
The XP nonsense drew the most attention for obvious reasons, but the repeated passing on 3rd-and-short in crucial situations as you pointed out I think is the worst mental error by coaching.
Players can get beat, sometimes the opposing team dials up a good defensive scheme and stuffs you, things happen. Putting yourself in a lower chance of success while simultaneously ignoring game context (running out the 1st half clock as you mention) is not excusable. Broken coverage with an open receiver, or even a good 1-on-1 matchup? Sure, I guess, take it if it's there. Must convert situation where you need 2 yards? For the love of Oski please just dial up a power run or something with a higher percentage of success.
Agree. I understand statistical probabilities, but these are young men playing the game. I think continually being successful is critical. So Cal ends up with THREE failed 2 point conversions in ONE game. I missed the first drive when Cal failed to convert on 4th down. Why did Cal not kick a FG? I got home and got the game on just after the first Cal TD, so I missed the first minutes. I don't know if I have mentioned this, but 18 points on 3 TDs is pretty much nonsense.
Shaw and his staff made great adjustments. This is how you respond after a disappointing week 1 loss, UI destroy a ranked conference opponent. Wilcox could learn a thing or two.
The rumors of stanfurds demise were greatly exaggerated once again.
This. I said in the insta-recap this is maybe one of my favorite losses because the offense did what we’ve been hoping/expecting it to. The loss is frustrating but we saw the strives we’ve wanted.
I'm happy because as a 30 year Manchester United fan, CR7 is back and we won. That got me thinking...will Cal ever make the decision to elevate Cal football...or should I go into each year just hoping to be mid-table...like a Newcastle United? Because something's gotta give. I need to either lower my 36 year Cal expectations or raise them.
The irrationality of being a Cal fan dictates that you must expect a Rose Bowl win and this being the year we finally do it. This experiences allows you to exercise your heart muscles, which is obviously only a good thing in the long-term. At least this is the only type of Cal I have ever known in the ~6 years since I've become a Cal fan.

Nevada took care of their opponent 49-10.
Chase Garbers, still optimistic. He told the media that "even though we lost, I feel like we made a lot of improvements as a team."

OK, so I hate the too error and other grammatical snafus. I'm grrr this AM so pls 4give me.
Also I see that it was the 1st two TDs, not two TDs in Q1.
18 pts on 3 TDs remains complete nonsense.

No, we only failed TWO 2 pt conversions.
THREE:
1: Trevon Clark 54 Yd pass from Chase Garbers (Two-Point Pass Conversion Failed)
2: Daniel Scott 8 Yd Interception Return (Two-Point Pass Conversion Failed)
3 (5th Cal YD): Damien Moore 1 Yd Run (Two-Point Run Conversion Failed)
6 plays, 75 yards, 1:38
It's fairly obvious why you go for 2 on the last TD.
In case I forgot to mention it, 18 points on 3 TDs is fucking nonsense.
Technically yes, but first one was a failed PAT. We didn't go for two.
Furd destroying SC...

State of Texas special teams karma, balances out the 2015 win over UT when they missed the extra point.
But depressing knowing this early in the season it's most likely lowest tier/no bowl.
It is a tough time to be a Cal fan in general right now.
Basketball looks more loss and less competitive than football.
Women’s basketball is still rebuilding.
Football is as disappointing as ever.
I realized that if offense plays well, l am irritated less even in a loss.

Every year as a Cal fan is Rose Bowl or bust. Embrace the pain because we can't take it with us when we die (unless, of course, Rose Bowl).
