The problem is he’s maybe gonna take his time weighing insane and astronomically high offers that Cal has no ability to even come close to matching. Our hoops NIL is on the kinda-meager side because of well-documented AD incompetence. A quick decision would certainly be more beneficial to MM and staff.
Even worse, Cal does not have that time. They need a legit alpha-dog athlete that can score or we’re very easily looking at a Mark Fox-esque 7-8 win team next year at best in MBB. Thats the reality of the situation…it’s f-ing dire. And with the portal closing soon there’s not a lotta options left.
Mike Williams and Jim Knowlton should be brought up on charges.
Have them sign, long term contracts with stipulations. Seems like every time these kids are faced with some kind of adverse situation they want to quit and go somewhere else. Tells me alot about their true character. They are making some money plus their getting their scholarship checks! Unfortunately in California its not life changing. That $ is not what it seems by the time you take out the taxes (State/Fed) plus and kind of agent fee and family cost!
When I was 1st asked to contribute to NIL to keep a few key baseball players ( yes: there are sports at Cal besides football and basketball that require NIL money, e.g. the SEC is offering 1M for a shortstop) I asked that same question. Is a contract prepared and entered into by the player obligating them for a certain period of time? I’m still waiting for an answer.
I believe it is currently not allowed to make the offer contingent on continued enrollment so everything is year to year by necessity. Also for now the NIL Collective, not the school, contracts with the player. I think the current situation is a dumb place to land tho - after they eventually are found to be employees, the schools will end up being able to contract directly with them and do multi year deals with opt outs and such. Just feels like a matter of time

Cal should be trying to bring Jaivian Thomas back.
Of course he would say we are in the mix because more bidders = more leverage but dudes, let’s move on here, he is not actually going to come back
Sweet, I have no idea how I'm supposed to feel about this

The enforceability of such is the bigger issue.
This current system is unsustainable though.

I think Illinois has similar or maybe slightly higher income tax than CA, but perhaps only for the first $100,000 or so.
