Brook Honoré transfers to Cal, who exchanges punters with Arkansas State
The California Golden Bears will be starting anew at punter next season.
With Lachlan Wilson graduating and off to try his hand at the NFL Draft, Cal needs a new punter. The transfer they landed on was Brook Honoré from Arkansas State.
Interestingly, Cal redshirt freshman punter Bobby Engstler decided to transfer, and ended up in Arkansas State, so the Bears had what amounted to a punter swap!
Interestingly, Honore has never punted in college. He sat for two years at Texas Tech on the bench and was then recruited over by Jack Burgess (who was second in the FCS in punting at Weber State before transferring to the Red Raiders). He transferred to Arkansas State, where he was second on the depth chart behind Ryan Heicher (64th in punt distance), so he didn’t punt again this season. So Cal currently will go into spring camp with a punter who will be seeing his first meaningful FBS action.
Still, as a high-schooler, Honore was averaging 41.8 yards per punt and was a 5 star (out of 6) punter in Sailer Kicking, so the potential is there. In his last two years of eligibility, hopefully Berkeley is the place where he can realize it.
Welcome to Cal Brook! Go Bears!
The delusional nature of college football players is interesting. The incumbent punter decides to trade in a degree from Cal to go to Arkansas State? Doesn't anyone in his life have the ability to slap him and say, "Look, kid, the odds of getting to the NFL might as well be zero. The odds of you living another 70 years and needing a job are pretty high. Maybe a degree from Cal will serve you better than from a school that might as well have a direction in its name."
Ideally he plays quite sparingly….
