Cal Bears at Paris Olympics - Monday, July 29th Schedule
Golden Bears have medaled in two events so far: a Gold and a Silver from Team USA in swimming relays
In case you missed it, Cal’s 1st Olympic Gold in Paris came via an exciting relay on Day 1 on Saturday.
Cal rising senior Jack Alexy led off the relay for Team USA. Alexy did not swim the prelim earlier that day. Alexy was just behind China when he gave way to Chris Guiliano. USA had a slim lead when Hunter Armstrong took over. The Cal Pro Group member essentially clinched the win with a very strong 3rd leg to build up a sizable lead. Caeleb Dressel brought the win home for the Americans
The NBC Sports YouTube video can only be viewed on YouTube (and probably for those in the US).

One event before that, Team USA touched the wall second behind Australia in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay. That swim earned Cal alum Abbey Weitzeil a silver medal after Weitzeil swam in the prelim earlier that day.
Cal Rowing Update:
With the number of Calympians spread across the various boats, Men’s Eight in rowing is an event where multiple Cal Bears can medal. Men’s Eight starts on Day 3 (July 29) with the Heats.
Women’s Eight also starts today. The Canadian Eight with two Cal Bears is looking to medal for a second consecutive Olympic Games.
The other boats with Cal rowers have mostly stayed on track to qualify for a final.
Kara Kohler (USA) went straight to the semifinal after winning her single sculls heat.
Inger Kavlie (Norway) had to go through the repechage on Sunday but will also advance to the double sculls semifinal.
Jack Robertson (Australia) and Ollie Maclean (New Zealand) have earned their spots in the Men’s Four Final. Tim Roth (Switzerland) has to race in the repechage.
Martin Mackovic (Serbia) is through to the double sculls semifinal after winning the repechage.

SILVER — 1 (Abbey Weitzeil, USA, Women’s Swimming, Women’s 4x100m Free Relay - swam the prelim)
BRONZE — 0
I am surprised that Cal Athletics is counting Hunter Armstrong in their medal count. This is probably why they did not get a retweet from Team USA College's Twitter account for Jack Alexy’s win. That account instead Tweeted Ohio State’s support for Hunter Armstrong’s medal in the same event.
With the Men’s 100m Backstroke Final coming up, Monday could be a day for the Cal Medal Count to go up.
To be consistent with before, I also would not count a Claire Weinstein medal in Cal’s tally. She is racing in the Women’s 200m Freestyle Final.
GO BEARS!
I was watching the girls badminton doubles yesterday featuring former Bear alums, the Xu sisters. Announcer went out of his way to talk about how many Olympians Cal produces--so much so that my wife and daughter asked if I had provided him his talking points.
