If my memory is correct, we had a decent 1st quarter. The wheels fell of on the 4th and 1 when we didn't score on a missed pass.. O-line played poorly, both in the run game and pass protection, but SDSU had a great defensive scheme. The lack of our run game hurt us the most.
All in all our defense had some weak play by the d-line in the 2nd quarter but seemed to bounce back after the half. Our D did not play poorly only giving up 20 points. Our offense was a disaster. Beyond putting no points on the board they gave up 14 for the Aztecs with a fumble returned for a TD and a 97 yard pick 6.
I think we lost this game for 3 reasons: 1. SDSU had a bye week and spent the time installing some offensive plays that we had not seen, 2. They had better schemes than us, 3. we gave up early, meaning our guys went through the motions but did not buckle down and focus. The latter worries me. This is where our team leaders need to step up, call out their teammates, get focused, get physical and go beat what should have been a lesser opponent.
Time will tell if our team has the intangible 'stuff' that winning teams have.
I have a slightly different perspective. Cal is one dimensional on offense. They can pass but can’t run (even against a theoretical “inferior” team). This is a problem and puts stress on JKS to be perfect. Even a 5th year senior is going to have problems. Was SDSU that inferior? Seems like their team speed was greater than Cal, especially their defense (at each level). Their defense had no issues with our OL and easily matched (beat) Cal’s RBs and WRs. It seemed we only had an advantage with our TEs. To my recollection, this is one of Cal’s slowest teams in quite some time.
Last Saturday night, SDSU was the better team…period. They earned the game. I don’t think it had anything to do with “energy”, “focus” or “will”. An added element of this loss is that this is what Wilcox teams do, it is our history. This game just magnified our weaknesses and SDSU had the players to execute. Simple as that really.
Doesn’t mean the season is over and I think Harsin/Rolo, specifically, can get the offense to a better place. Time will tell. The Dline has to get a lot better, IMO.
While hindsight is 20/20, I’m not sure it was necessary to try and score a TD on the first drive. A field goal would have been just fine. It seemed that that sequence allowed SDSU to gain confidence and play loose and aggressively. Even if SDSU loses the rest of their games, last Saturday they were the better team.
I think there are only a couple of nails left to be placed in Wilcox’s coffin (I’ve tired trying to support him).
I agree with not taking the easy FG and points on that first drive. It is the first drive of the game and we needed to come away with some points. Perhaps that gives us some early confidence and gives SDSU some doubt. Instead, stopping us on 4th down really gave SDSU a lot of confidence and momentum
I'm with you on having talent issues, but Im not ready to believe that explains 34-0 to SDSU. I want to think this really is an inexplicable result, hence leaning on the platitudes to explain it. We'll know a lot more after BC..
I don't think BC presents the problems SDSU did ~ team speed. BC is a 50/50 game but BC should be favored if only for home field advantage. For now, I'm blindingly believing in Harsin/Rolo for the desired outcome. I expect a "rock fight".
Still going to the game this weekend at BC mostly because I need to vent to other Old Blues in person about how tediously familiar this all feels. Another fun fact about that terrible performance: it was SDSU's first shutout of a major conference opponent at home in the program's 50-year history.
With respect, I see things differently in 2025. After watching the Minn game I felt the win was due to a few bad plays from the Minn return man. The Oline and Dline were unimpressive, and the run game was also poor imo. Against SDSU, a very well coached team exposed Cal's continued weakness on the Oline, Dline, skill positions and secondary. To me, the portal and NIL have very negatively impacted the talent on the 2025 GB team. it's not a matter of (just) coming out flat against SDSU, but rather a matter of fielding a much weaker and less talented team in 2025. The upcoming ACC conference grind will prove if I'm right (talent) or wrong (motivation).
So in short, we are at that point once again, Wilcox needs to be removed from his post. Look what UCLA decided to do, cut the rope now before the entire ship sinks!
Pawlawski and Allegri said this year’s team is more talented than last year’s. So there’s that. I think the upcoming conference slate will be due to coaching. If we take BC and Duke, I can forgive stinking state. Otherwise, why are we doing this?
Cals secondary got drafted last year. Mendoza has a chance to win the Heisman. This team is improved at O-line (bar couldn’t be lower) and special teams, I don’t see a better team anywhere else honestly.
I'm on the fence about firing Wilcox immediately. But I think his seat should be scorching hot over the next couple weeks.
It's obviously about two things: 1. Send a message about our newfound program expectations, and 2. Optimizing the transition and scale of rebuild
If we were to fire him mid season, I would appoint Rolo interim HC and let this be an audition for him, and then be very aggressive the moment the season ends.
Wilcox has become so stale. If he was as intense on the sideline as he is in these post game interviews maybe he could light a fire under the player's asses. He mostly looks like a deer in the headlights on the sideline. I know he's competitive but sometimes you got to show it and act on it. Don't waif for the presser.
Monumentally disappointing and yet so completely predictable. This is the Justin Wilcox experience… in year 9. And he looked largely indifferent on the sideline. I get that we’re 3-1 (with wins against two very bad teams), but we’ve all seen this show before. Maybe he’ll surprise us and turn it around next week, but it seems it’s long past time for a new voice in the room. We can all appreciate his efforts and the fact that he’s a good guy who has been committed to Cal, but he’s also become very wealthy coaching to largely mediocre results. No other coach would have been afforded a leash like this. I’m thinking the coaching search has already begun in RR’s mind - based on previous comments, I’ve never been convinced Ron thought Wilcox was the guy. I’m sure I’ll get some hate for this, but there’s a Cal alum from Walnut Creek currently running the defense for the #6 team in the country. I would start there.
Meh, fuck our 42.7% winning percentage since he peaced out. Maybe he was smart enough to bail off the sinking ship with tedford. Ultimately, I’d just love to see someone with the fire that Wilcox clearly lacks. If we can get that with a dude that played here, great. Just one option, and I’m sure there are plenty more, but hopefully a change gets made sooner rather than later.
Just because I don’t donate enough to get the inside scoop on these things, his crime was using the raise tedford offered to go back to udub for more money, then leave and take recruits with him?
At this point, I would prefer the HC to be from the offense side of the ball. If Tosh is that good, and i'm not sure he his ~ hire him away from oregun to be our DC. Try to keep Harsin and Rolo (one of them can be HC perhaps). Or do a nation wide search and wait 3 years for the changes to take effect.
My strategy would be very simple. Ascertain which coach (Harsin/Rolo) that JKS is most strongly attached to and make him the head coach. Else, we lose JKS as well.
Fair point regarding an offensive minded head coach, but if this year goes sideways, probably best to start fresh. In the portal era, success can be had immediately - case in point: Indiana.
As a former coach I'm sure this happened. On Monday of game week, a game plan is generated and the coaching staff must have assumed that this game was going to be a "walk over" and they didn't want to show much of the playbook to following opponents. It was very generic. Running game with no counters, reverses, draws, power sweeps, etc. The only runs I saw were zone blocking dives. Passing game was no quick passes, ie; quick slants, or digs or TE stops in zones. No screens. Also, generic blocking schemes in pass protection. On defense the D line was all generic in every aspect. No pressure dogs such as corner blitz, 11 blitz, loops and so on. In other words they took this game in an over confident way and it BACK FIRED!
So in short, we are at that point once again, Wilcox needs be removed from his post. Look what UCLA decided to do, cut the rope now before the entire ship sinks!
Why is it so hard to say that SDSU won because they are a better team? It was 34 to 0.
Maybe SD State forced Cal into playing like they did because after 3 games a well coached team figured out how to defend Cal's young QB and how to get through Cal's defense.
No, SDSU won because Cal was lazy.
The narrative of laziness and mental health issues as the main reason for the loss is hard to get behind. As if Cal should cancel practice this week and have intensive therapy sessions instead.
Because for the last several years, we've been asked to donate to NIL because of the talent difference between us and contending P4 teams. Well clearly a huge part of the reason why we suck is because of coaching and attitude rather than raw skill.
I’ve struggled with answers re coaching etc. But bottom line is this…..SDS has excellent, strong athletes who did not get recruited by the P4 programs and wanted to make a statement by punching us hard in the mouth , thinking we were pampered “smart” Cal athletes who would not be smart or mean enuf to respond. “Smart” in this context meaning you have to have the inner pride and strength to know that the only way to deal with a bully is to fight back hard and let it be known that you are and can be just as mean and physical as the attacker. You may lose but you have to show that you’re not afraid of losing, and will go down fighting. Cal did not do that. That’s on both the individual players and the coaching staff (who know this but apparently did not light the necessary fire under the players as they saw this unfolding). Ron Rivera was a great linebacker and NFL coach not only because he had skill, strength and intelligence but also because if he got hit in the mouth he hit back, twice as hard. Cal needs to get meaner and nastier. P4 football is a mean and nasty game(make no mistake). Cal is a wonderful academic institution and we attract great athletes and students. That’s a given. But if we want to compete in the real world of today’’s P4 football that’s not nearly enuf. Otherwise just go Ivy League.
Team laid an egg. The joy of the 3-0 start, to say the least, has been tempered. To quote my buddy Chris Browne who, when asked last year about the up and down ride of his beloved Colorado Buffaloes, said, “I just watch the games.”
SPOCK: Your use of language has altered since our arrival. It is currently laced with, ...shall I say, ...more colourful metaphors. 'Double dumb ass on you' ...and so forth.

SPOCK: For example?
KIRK: Oh, the collective works of Jacqueline Susann. The novels of Harold Robbins.
I took his comment to mean he doesn’t have a hell of a lot of control over what is happening in the conferences, in the NCAA or even at the individual universities. He just likes watching the games, frustrations and all. Is that how you took it?

Cut the rope.....
2018 7–6 4–5 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox Lost Cheez-It Bowl vs TCU
2019 8–5 4–5 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox Won Redbox Bowl vs Illinois
2020 1–3 1–3 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox None (COVID-19 shortened season)
2021 5–7 4–5 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox None
2022 4–8 2–7 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox None
2023 6–7 4–5 Pac-12 Justin Wilcox Lost Independence Bowl vs Texas Tech
2024 6–7 2–6 ACC Justin Wilcox Lost LA Bowl vs UNLV
Before you cut the rope, tell me your plan going forward so we don't end up going backward.

At some point you have to rip the band-aid.
Yes, and I still fear October :-(
You’ve been pretty consistent in this point - kudos. I don’t share the negativity but just wanted to applaud you for consistency
One must have a point of view. :-)

Barring a miracle, it's only got to be about logistics now in terms of when Ron fires him. (At least I'd hope)

I think for anyone with more than a decade of cal fandom, this idea is dead on arrival.
39 years of Cal fandom here. I’m willing to move on from stuff that happened 13 years and three coaching regimes ago.
Fuck Tosh.

Pretty much.

Well said. Thank you.

RR had a very sour look to him the entire sideline interview he gave during the TV broadcast. I also wondered what extremes he was contemplating.
The situation only got worse after the interview. I'm sure his inner thoughts would be felonious if he made them outer thoughts.
Troy is a very good coach and quality person. Like Harsin, just was not in the right environment. Stanford more concern about pronouns instead of football.

All these coaches have won football championships! Troy won three Big Sky Championships. Hire winners and you will win!
They lost 36-13 at wazoo, a team that is a shadow of its former self.
