The California Golden Bears are continuing to make steady progress on the academic front, particularly with their revenue sports. Both men’s basketball and football saw record improvement yet again in receiving degrees from the greatest public university on the planet.

Men’s basketball hit a perfect 100% graduation student rate for the first time ever. This is a remarkable decade-long turnaround—Cal men’s basketball was 38% in 2014. Cal men’s basketball sat at 86% in 2020.
Football continued upward improvement, from an 80% GSR in 2020 to 84% in 2021. Cal football sat at 44% in 2013. That number is good for sixth in the Pac-12, trailing Stanford, Utah, Arizona State and the Washingtons.

Despite less than stellar results from each program on the field in the last two years, it’s good to see that the Cal athletes are able to fulfill the most important part of their mission when coming to UC Berkeley.

The graduation student rate metric is based on students who received athletic scholarships, enrolled at Cal as freshmen or incoming transfers from 2011-14, and completed their degree within six years. So these metrics are still primarily based on the recruits of Jeff Tedford, Sonny Dykes, and Mike Montgomery.

Additionally, success in the classroom should translate into bigger buy-in from the various academic powers in UC leadership that athletics are worth investing in and are a net add to the university experience. This could hopefully lead to more buy-in down the road from the administration and our greater Cal alumni.
