I think UO only uses a single middle linebacker with more emphasis on the edges. He may have some insecurity that his stats would be impacted negatively (likely) in what is a make-or-break year for him. He had a lot more agency to roam in Wilcox's scheme.

Give Cade a bag. He’s our best defensive player.

justbearly's avatar

He is very good, would like to watch him play one more year at Cal. I guess we will find out soon enough how it plays out.

Toohandy's avatar

Wow. With Lupoi's history of being such a good defensive coach, why are all these defensive starters leaving, especially the ILB's. Our front 6 were the best Cal has had in years. The weak part of the D were the DB's. Please offer Cade a top number of $.

PawlOski's avatar

I think this may be less about money than it is about a different scheme and how that would feature him.

ABA Ivan Davis's avatar

They a re leaving to get paid. But everyone is doing this. This free for all needs rules.

Maybe because he is bringing his own players

with a new coaching staff AND NIL money being thrown around, can't really blame these high value guys entering the portal. With a new coaching staff AND knowing outside interest will only up their value (and increase their NIL $), there is little risk if you are someone Cal wants. Hopefully Cal ups their offer to guys like Ulauve and have him return.

now if you are a fringe player... you run the risk of Cal not picking you back up because they have a better portal player coming in... but then if your a fringe player, and really want to play (more than get a cal degree) well tehn by all means try to find playing time elsewhere.

I said it last year and I'll say it again this year - we shouldn't be fretting over losing guys from a 7 win team. The difference this year is that we have Tosh, who will stack serious talent fast.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Yes. Upgrades at every position were basically needed.

Still, having to turn over your entire roster every year is no way to build a program.

Next year will be the big test portal-wise, IMO.

JoJoSungy's avatar

If we have a huge roster turnover, I’d say we’re gonna have to shift gears to a Christobol at Miami path, not a Cig model unless Tosha gets a ton of his former players. It may take more time than Cal has to correct the ship.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

With this massive coaching overhaul, coupled with such major roster turnover, Tosh is really going to have his work cut out for him. I think while the staff can recruit, the X’s and O’s are going to be a work in progress.

Improving team speed and adding some toughness/physicality would be a great start in building a culture. If the D can play fast and loose, you’ll have a chance.

JoJoSungy's avatar

Tosh* stupid autocorrect.

JoJoSungy's avatar

find out your value for one more year vs declaring for draft. That’s how I read this.

The statistics are not favorable for a player entering the portal to return to their original team. The top players all have agents these days who advise them of their market value and teams that are interested in their services, before they declare...According to AI, Based on the most recent NCAA data and historical portal trends, only a small fraction of college football players—roughly 5%—end up returning to their original team after entering the transfer portal.

DaymanCometh's avatar

I think that's generally the way to approach it, but the structural dynamics of compensation (eg House settlement) and the portal itself have been changing every year (eg 2 windows last year) so any historical stats should be taken with a grain of salt

doncal's avatar

That is a fair point. The amount of money that schools like Cal have to spend is significantly higher than prior. But the big football schools seem to already have figured out ways to get around the supposed cap, while staying within the letter of the law. A top player like Uluave, however, has an agent who likely already has multiple indications in hand from schools that are interested in his services and a good idea of the NIL package that he would receive. Cal would know that as well and I assume Rivera and Co did all they could to try and keep him out of the portal to begin with. As they did successfully with JKS. I would also be suprised if Uluave returns at this point.

Alex Wisdom's avatar

Given there are 4,000 players in the portal, I think that 5% number will be going up significantly.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Will be shocked if he returns.

Justbear's avatar

Have we signed anyone yet

Heino's avatar

My neighbor's son is a P-4 linebacker in the portal, I'll go talk to him. ;-)

Don’t hate the player hate the NIL/portal game, in many instances it pays to roll the dice for the player, it is unfortunate for the fans

Cici's avatar

This one hurts 😩

GoldenHairs's avatar

when does the good portal news start coming in

Justbear's avatar

I hate that now coaches have to recruit their own players.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I have no problem with NIL. The transfer portal, OTOH, is a total farce.

The NCAA has turned their product into a complete joke.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

sycasey's avatar

Yeah, no sports league would run a system where every player is a free agent every year.

Justbear's avatar

They really should limit play immediately only once and sit out a year after second transfer.

Toohandy's avatar

The NIL should be run like 'the NFL with contracts which limit switching teams "willy nilly". The college athlete in the major sports are now professional athletes and should be signed to contracts which means they would be bound to play for team they are owned by for the period of the contract. PERIOD!

Avinash Kunnath's avatar

Everytime the NCAA has moved to enforce restrictions, the Supreme Court has struck it down. The only way to mandate changes like this is to classify student-athletes as employees of the university, but there is no political will to make the extreme cuts that'd be required to cover the cost of football and basketball athletes.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Right.

So you root for the jersey, not the players…because the jersey is constant.

Peetyjay's avatar

Which is exactly what happens in pro sports and why CFB ain’t what it used to be…except your team can’t relocate to another city.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

But as sy points about above, even in pro sports players are by and large contractually bound and stick around.

This portal is absurd. It’s unsustainable.

JoJoSungy's avatar

Unless you’re owned by John Fisher

Justbear's avatar

So now Bush, Uluave, Ferrelli, and McCulloch. Our top 4 LBs are in the portal. We are only really keeping JKS. That's it.
