Do we even have confirmation that Tevin Paul is returning? Would be nice to have him if so I've always loved his ability to generate pressure even if he doesn't always finish the sack.

I always assumed he was back because he was a covid-19 opt out.

I would like to think he's back but the best assumption for Cal teams is to have no assumptions with our track record.

Wilcox always impresses with amazing hires.

On defense. I was initially impressed with the Baldwin hire but it has all been downhill on offense.

I'm not an outcomes based person, I have been a big fan of the process of Wilcox's hires. Baldwin was a good a-priori hire just didn't pan out. In the long run good process will always win out.

I actually liked Baldwin in his final year. He took over QB coaching duties and Garbers really imporved. Also it's hard to measure intangibles. First-time HC Wilcox surrounded himself with former head coaches and I'm sure he learned a ton from Baldwin.

Yeah, mostly defense. But even for offense, Baldwin and Tui were really impressive hires at the time based on their names. Results not so much.

How many / does it take to write an article?

I realize recruiting is his biggest selling point, but you cannot dispute his work with DBs. How long until he wants to do that instead of LBs? I cannot imagine revenge against UO is enough to keep him at Cal forever (though how nice to consistently beat them......).

So glad to have him on staff. Welcome to Cal, Coach Heyward!

If his goal is to be a DC. Some work with the LBs can only benefit him. I think that’s a good look if that makes what he’s getting ready to do in the next few years.

I found it quite humorous, with 1. You being a big Cal fan (obviously, being here) and 2. The history of banter here about you and your wikipedia links.. Then when I go to wikipedia to post a link for you in jest, it coincidentally has a picture of Cal in it as an example of the topic. So, when I asked "Gobears49, is this your work???" I meant meant that to be a humorous, rhetorical question, rather than a literal question about wikipedia operations, as a continuation of the banter, so to speak.

It's really funny because it's obvious from GB49's response that he did not even click on the wikipedia link you posted. lol

But it was such a valuable link, and I spent so much time finding it!!!

According to your beloved wikipedia, "A lateral pass is distinguished from a forward pass, in which the ball is thrown forward, towards the opposition's end zone. In a lateral pass the ball is not advanced"

So a forward lateral pass does not exist.

I've known the term "forward lateral" to informally mean "illegal forward pass". Meaning someone is attempting a lateral (in the field of play where a forward pass is not legal) but the ball moves forward and draws the flag. Then someone would say, "they got flagged for 'forward lateral'". I vaguely remember people using this term informally back in the day, but again that was to refer to an illegal pass, not a "shovel pass" or "pitch" which I think GB49 was thinking of in his creative play design scenario, where a QB isn't traditionally overhand throwing the ball, but doing a little toss during a misdirection. Mahomes and the Chiefs have this little trick play they ran a couple times in the playoffs, which GB49 might have been inspired by.

Okay that makes more sense. He must have been thinking of a shovel pass. or maybe those toss "handoffs" to jet sweep that Webb used to do.

I clicked on the youtube link. They called it "shovel pass" twice. They never called it a forward lateral pass.

I clicked on your second link. They called it a "basketball-style push passes" "underhanded flips" and "underhanded forward flip" Never did it say "forward lateral pass" anywhere on both of your links.

And yes, it makes a difference because no one can understand what you are talking about if you call it a forward lateral pass. It's either a forward pass or a lateral which is thrown behind you and that's a run play.

Next there will be a "feet firmly planted jump pass". GB49, "forward lateral" is a misnomer and is shorthand for saying "the intended lateral pass went forward and was flagged as an illegal forward pass. So a strategy, mind you, of specifically using the "forward lateral" would be an attempt at cheating, and since it's out in the open, you're not often going to get away with it. Though it does happen. Ask Bills fans what they think about the Music City Miracle. That play was actually dubbed "The Forward Lateral" at the time to discredit the Titans' win.

I'm always responding to "deleted"

A "forward lateral" is a paradox that is now inside the "deleted" black box. Which is a Schrodinger's box of sorts, where the ball is moving both forward AND laterally. Its true direction only realized upon observation.
