Lanning seems like a stand-up guy, especially compared to the Kiffin situation. I'm glad Tosh is following his model.
Tosh's history notwithstanding, he's doing the right thing for Oregon and he's being transparent about how he's compartmentalizing his time during the transition. Him sticking with Oregon through the playoffs makes me trust him more. This awkward two-team activity is inevitable within the current system so this is as good a solution as any.
Basically what you're saying is that Kiffin pulled a Sonny Dykes, so it makes him persona non grata at Ole Miss as a consequence, right? Otherwise, it seems kind of selective to criticize Kiffin while congratulating Tosh and Dan Lanning for sticking with their former teams through the playoffs.
I'm not defending Kiffin. I simply compared him to Sonny Dykes' shameless shopping himself around to leave Cal.
I merely want to draw a distinction between what Kiffin did that resulted in his leaving Ole Miss and Tosh's hiring by Cal. I don't see that Tosh (or Dan Lanning for that matter) shopped themselves around in the shameless pursuit of the next job. Maybe some coaches do shop themselves around. Maybe they do it discreetly and not so brazenly.
I think that there's a difference. When Dykes left Cal in January 2017, I was very critical of his exit. I was critical of his shameless efforts to leave Cal by shopping himself around that started two years (?) earlier. No love lost for either coach.
Sonny wanted to get back to Texas ASAP and everyone knew it. It was a cursed extension of convenience and I'm surprised he got fired before finding an exit strategy.
This is such a refreshing approach compared to the usual coaching carousel chaos! The Dan Lanning precedent from 2021 shows that seeing acommitment through to a championship actually builds better institutional trust on both sides. What's really smart is how Lupoi is already doubling down on Cal recruiting during every non-gameplanning minute, especailly locking in Sagapolutele so quickly, because that shows he can walk and chew gum at the same tiem even if the timeline is brutal.
I'm now rooting for Ducks to win the championship even if it means late arrival in Berkeley. I'm sure he can recruit, interview coaches, and meet with donors in the meantime.

Good stuff.
Well—-so far..so good! I hope he had a few other home visits while in Hawaii!

I admit, Kiffin has a long enough history of controversy that I did not expect to find a defender outside the state of Louisiana right now.

I guess I can tolerate a ducks championship win

Honestly, this is how it should be and the CFB rules should incentivize coaches staying with their teams before accepting a new job.
Tosh's voice and speech mannerisms remind me a little of Jesse "The Body" Ventura sans MN accent.
