I was confused at first on how their plays were set up in the key because they looked a bit wonky...and I think it makes sense? You have one guy "legit" screen one side of the key, the guard posts up next to him to wall out his defender, and then you have a 3rd guy taking up space on the other side (but not a screen) so the guard has a clear runway to the rim. Or something like that, this is just off memory. It was interesting, and not getting called at all.
I always suspect coaching has something to do with teams coming on stong right after halftime..good adjustments by one coach and deer in the headlights by the other side.
Team and coach have to learn from this one..it was winnable against a good team ..and some nice individual performances, as well, against a quality lineup.
If you have a chance, could you breakdown a few of the defensive failures on back picks? Many times (including once on the baseline) there was no Cal defender to stop a free drive to the basket. That strikes me as poorly coached weakside defense and saw Cal switched to a zone a few times.
There was obvious home cooking but nothing that was super egregious. They set the tone to start & end the game, but it had nothing to do with us giving up the 16 point lead. I feel like this is a case where we can just rest easy and trust the process.
There were some lousy calls (the review of the Mady goaltend, Wilkinson's fifth, non-call on the guy who smeared Petreitis at mid-court and got an easy two on the other end), but you have to know that you're playing uphill and are rarely gonna get the benefit of the doubt on the road in these games. Typically frustrating homecooking.
I remember Dennis Gates doing a lot more in his time at Cal than his stats would indicate, but It's nice to see him doing well now.
Did anyone react to the 'walking' top of the key picks Mizzou bigs were "setting"? I was apoplectic! Was I wrong though?

The ACC is 1-9 against the SEC through the first night of the challenge.
How would Mark Madsen respond to a chest shove in his playing days? Perhaps this game will pay dividends later in the season!
Seems like a better team than last year but still not a strong team. Would be surprised if we have a winning record
Final score better than expected.

They played great in the 1st half, with excellent shooting, ball movement, and defense. We have a good team!
We need to come up with a nickname for Wilkinson stat!

Not that ACC officials hate us less, but were these SEC or ACC refs?
I have a working theory that hatred of the "Left Coast" prevails in both the ACC and SEC.
So, gray area calls don't go for us, most of the time.
