Film Room: Scheming Easy Yards in the Pass Game
How Cal took a good play to set up and even better play against Minnesota
Cal’s offense against Minnesota was, to my eye, significantly more interesting and varied that prior games. The gameplan was obviously much more aggressive going downfield than what Cal showed against Texas Southern, and was much more successful scheming open receivers than what Cal showed against Oregon State. I wanted to highlight some of the more interesting plays and how they built upon themselves.
There were lots of interesting roll out plays that gave Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele multiple targets at different levels down the field, and interesting wrinkles like the plays where JKS feigned a QB run before throwing wide in an attempt to distract the defense.
Not all of it was successful. For example, I’m pretty sure that on this early snap, Jaron was supposed to roll to his right, but a blitzing Minnesota edge rusher blew up his roll out path and eventually led to a sack:
