Cal RB Jaydn Ott on how to maximize yardage: "I take my linemen out to eat."
This and a few snippets on Cal's star running back at ACC Media Day.
Jaydn Ott was obviously the focal point of many questions during his time at Cal’s ACC Media Day slot on Tuesday (click here for some snippets of other players stepping into the limelight).
One question he got came around how he plans to maximize running performance. The answer? All the meats, to the big men in front leading the way.
"Take my linemen out to eat. During practice, I take care of those boys. We split up our groups during conditioning. We have the bigs, they'll run before the skills. I like to come out there early, make sure I have the water bottle in hand. Whenever they're tired, I make sure I'm there."
He joins Marshawn Lynch in a proud tradition of Cal running backs treating their linemen to proper eats.
Head coach Justin Wilcox emphasized in his press conference how important balance and an improving offensive unit will be to get Ott to his best poossible spot.
To be able to run the football - obviously we have an exceptionally talented back in Jaydn. The O-Line has come a long way. And then being able to incorporate that passing game and RPO game is everything. You gotta score, you gotta put up points and you gotta be able to run the football. We're excited about taking another step. We had some really good games running the football. What we need to do now is be more consistent.
Ott was asked a few times about potentially breaking the Russell White rushing record at Cal (he’s just over 1100 yards away), but it is only partly on his mind.
"It's not really my main focus. My ultimate goal is to make it to the league. Once we get there, and start breaking records there, then I'll probably care."
While I appreciate Jaydn’s candor about focusing on the NFL as a goal, the mention of a team goal such as winning the new conference would have made his care for his linemen appear a tad less self-serving. But I get it , 20-year-olds with a lot of money all of a sudden…
