Cal running back Jaydn Ott discusses the deep backfield
What does Cal's offensive star seeing from his fellow Golden Bear RBs during spring practice?
Jaydn Ott spoke with the media last Saturday and seemed upbeat about the progress of the Cal running back corps.
On what he’s seeing from the offensive line.
Offensive line looks good as always. There's a couple of plays I really like running. I just really like following both my guards [Siaope Vatikani and Matthew Wykoff] Whenever they play, man, it's always going to be a good play.
On seeing Byron Cardwell back out there.
Yeah, it's good to see him get back out there on the field, man. He looks like he didn't lose a step. He got that bulky knee brace on. I know he want to get rid of it, but the whole running back room is glad to see him back out there doing what he loves, smiling and not on the sideline.
What have you made about, you know, of that running back group behind you?
I mean, even last year we had a bunch of help as well at running back, but it's some more people in the room. It's going to be great this year. Like you can put anybody in and we'll still have the same result, if not better. Everybody has like a different style of play.
Obviously, Jet [Jaivian Thomas] got in there as a freshman. What have you seen from him just in terms of building on what he did last year?
He's grown man. Like he's always in there in the building watching film, bugging Coach AT [Aristotle Thopmson] about film, watching film with me and some of the older guys.
Just yesterday we were doing in the running back room, we populate the board with all the plays and run plays, pass concepts, run blocking, pass blocking. So it's cool to see him grow, from freshman year not knowing anything to being able to be in a room and just write everything down like and not have to ask anybody.
What's it been like integrating Kadarius Calloway into the team?
I was his host on his visit, and then ever since he came on to visit, we clicked, man, we had a good time hanging out during off season before winter workouts, especially during winter workouts, we got to work out together and go do some running back drills and stuff and it is good to have him.
Anything in particular you’re seeing from new offensive linemen
[Nick] Morrow is growing a lot. He went from not taking the single snap last year to coming out here, communicating to the rest of the line and when we talk about, just football and he's able to communicate efficiently, come to the sideline and talk about what he saw.
So it's good to see him. And like I remember when he was a gray shirt, came n real life looking real skinny, like you could play tight end. But he's grown so much.
Every time I read these Spring updates I become even more optimistic about the 2024 Golden Bear Football Team! GO BEARS.
