Cal running back Jaivian Thomas talks about returning from injury
The California Golden Bears speedster is looking for a breakout sophomore campaign.
You feel good being out there?
Yes, sir. It feels great. From last season to not be able to really participate at the end, coming back this year and having a good offseason to do it, like what I proceeded to do to grow over the offseason and go do what I do.
What was it about your workouts that led to the success?
Being able to put on this weight helped me a lot coming in because last year I was a lot lighter and I kind of feel that played a huge part in kind of what happened at the end of the year. That's where I have a different mindset coming in this year and believing that if I get bigger, I can do a lot of good things.
On recovering that scary injury at Oregon
It was [scary], but I overcame it and I'm glad it happened.
On his fit in a pretty deep running back room.
Like you said, it's is very deep, We all bring different things to the running back room. We are good in our own ways. We all have a lot of things to improve on.
We've got Jaydn Ott. Of course, he is the one, but we have a lot of guys that can bring more things to do.
What can you bring?
I can bring a lot of things. You know, most importantly, my speed. Only one Jet.
How do you feel like you and DTC [Dean Taylor-Chapman] set the tone in practice.
You know, me and DTC, we did a good job of of of trusting our line, in trusting the plays that's being called. Sometimes you won't believe…people…can run certain things or do certain plays But we did a good job of staying the course.
On the 66 yard run
Just trusting the line, reading the linebackers and just doing what I do.
What are your impressions of the line so far?
There's got to be a difference with Coach Blo being a coordinator, an offensive line coach. The line, they've got history with Coach Bloesch last year. We're not really too deep right now, but they have the experience and they know what to do and they're really good at it.
A very positive interview. I hope we can run the ball, but it will depend on our passing game stretching the field, and keeping opposing linebackers at bay. We are not a run heavy team. The ability of our line to give the quarterback just enough time to hit receivers may tell the tale of our running attack, and our ability to keep our defense off the field.
