Cal starting QB position remains an open battle as North Texas looms
Sam Jackson V, Fernando Mendoza, and Ben Finley are all competing for the starting quarterback position, but no frontrunner has emerged.
Cal head coach Justin Wilcox has emphasized the need for improved decision-making and competition among the three quarterbacks vying for the starting spot. Each player has showcased distinct strengths during practice, particularly at last week’s open scrimmage (check out the notebook about it).
Sam Jackson V: Jackson has displayed his mobility and scrambling ability, a trait he frequently used in high school. However, he is focusing on refining his pocket presence, which is crucial for success at the collegiate level. His best play of the scrimmage was a 46-yard touchdown pass to Trond Grizzell, indicating his potential as a passer. Jackson completed 9 of 22 passes for 121 yards, including one touchdown. Although he was sacked multiple times and experienced negative rushing yards, he avoided turnovers and showed progress in his decision-making.
Fernando Mendoza: Mendoza demonstrated his aptitude for sideline throws, establishing chemistry with his receivers. He finished the scrimmage with a 10-for-18 record, amassing 126 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. Mendoza's ability to create plays even in challenging situations was evident, indicating his resourcefulness as a quarterback. His self-description as an "operator" reflects his confidence in managing the game effectively and efficiently.
Ben Finley: Finley emerged as a strong contender for the quarterback role, displaying steady improvement since the beginning of camp. He managed an 11-for-21 record with 177 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a single interception. Despite occasional lapses, his overall progression has been notable. Finley's performance in the scrimmage, especially during the second team period, showcased his ability to lead explosive drives and connect with key receivers like Jeremiah Hunter and Marquis Montgomery.
Finley's consistency and progress in practice have positioned him well. Mendoza's creativity in making plays from challenging situations showcases his adaptability. Jackson's emphasis on pocket presence and decision-making bodes well for his potential as a passer.
Even if a starting quarterback is named for North Texas, Justin Wilcox and Jake Spavital have stated that there hasn't been much separation from the practices. So it's possible this battle is not settled in the coming days and will carry on through the start of the 2023 season.
In short, it would not be surprising if we saw multiple quarterbacks on the field against North Texas.
I'm excited to see Benandosam Jackfindoza V
In Spavital we trust
