It's weird seeing the team forget how to play offense, let alone defense. Not sure what happened to our passing, but my hunch is that we can't schedule another non-conference schedule like this. We need to test the team and can't have them going into ACC play essentially rusty -- they need to understand at what level they need to play. I think that happened after they lost to KSU and started putting everything together through and past the UCLA game...but we haven't played anyone since and this game was just sloppy.

Missing Petraitus obviously hurt here, as he usually comes in and helps stem the tide when we're struggling.

The positive is if there was ever a year to have this easy of a schedule, it was this one. The program needed to start stacking some wins in the worst way, and they did so. Coach Madsen is on the right track. Time to start recruiting more talented players. This was never a game.

Now the question is what happens v a Notre Dame team that held ‘Furd to 40 points at Maples? That’s now a must win or you’re staring at potentially 0-6 to start the year.

We simply got outplayed. Sad to see us give up so many so many easy inside baskets. Giving up so many open 3's. We did not play with as much effort, talent or execution. Back to the drawing board, Bears.

Terrible shooting night this bad will lead to a loss every time if it's against a good team. Not sure what positives there are to take away other than I'm pretty sure they won't shoot this bad against ND

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

ND held Furd to 40 points at Maples. They defend.

The signs have been there - this roster struggled to score and rebound v Dominican, Northwestern State, etc.

Feel bad for Madsen and the team tonight. They got thoroughly beat at home by a team without their lottery pick PG even playing. Good news is it came early so it can serve as a wake up call ahead of the rest of the ACC schedule.

Thought we were gonna make things interesting down the stretch.

mrjpark's avatar

We were about to and then Bell tried to play hero ball and killed our momentum.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

We can squash the NCAA Tournament talk.

BerkeleyBear's avatar

Too early. Let's see how they respond to this. They got exposed but it could help light a fire. I don't see them completely falling apart on Madsen's watch.

mrjpark's avatar

I don't think it was ever serious. A huge win for us is being anywhere near the bubble by the end of the season and using the NIT for practice.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I don’t think they fall apart, I just think this is who they are. They were pushed to the limit by mid-Major and DII teams at home in recent weeks.

They’re just not good enough to Dance. Not deep enough. Not enough P4 players, especially with Rytis gone for the year. Not enough rebounding. Not enough D.

The 2 best teams they’ve played they’ve been blown off the court 3 of 4 halves.

The roster is comprised mostly of G5 players, and that’s what they resemble.

It’s still progress in year 3, which is great, but this was as big of a disappointment as you can have - they were NEVER in this game, despite Louisville missing their best player.

Not a competitive night. Good experience for the players.

I’m no expert, but if u don’t make shots u don’t win.

It’s just one game, and the loss to a top-20 team is not what is so hard to stomach.

But despite Louisville missing their best player, Cal does not belong on the same court….in the biggest game at Haas in a decade. Overmatched.

12-1 v the softest schedule you will ever see doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. Completely exposed.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Seen enough.

Cal’s simply not competitive with this level of team.

Finn's avatar

And Louisville is missing one of their best players man!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Potential lottery pick. Toyed with this Cal team.

Knowlton, Fox, Mike Williams, Wyking…all should be incarcerated. ;-)

OMG he is terrible. We have one half decent big and the rest are just trash.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I don’t mean to be hard on him, but the form he showed at Loyola MD last year offered hope that he could give you something in the post this year.

He hasn’t been able to give them much of anything, and other than passing, his offensive contributions are virtually non-existent. He was a 66% career shooter from the line before Cal and this year he’s <39%…not sure what happened - maybe injury, or confidence, etc., but they’re simply not deep enough to really make much noise.

They need him to figure it out and give them something when Dort is out. Yesterday a prime example - he got a nice lead for an easy lay-up, went up soft and got swatted. Brutal.

BerkeleyBear's avatar

Where is John camden? 0 points?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

He lacks the athleticism to hang with these kinds of athletes.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Wow, fitting a team that gave up double-digit offensive rebounds to a small DII school in Marin would struggle with rebounding against a top-20 team. Shocker.

BerkeleyBear's avatar

Correct. Rebounding is a definite weakness for this team. Looking down the bench, any solutions? Yeaney, Rytis, Dut?

sean's avatar

Rytis can rebound but he's injured. He'd be playing 15+ min/game if he were healthy

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Word is he’s out for the year.

Camden’s lack of athleticism was unfortunately exposed on both ends today.

dcblue's avatar

I forgot about the game. Checking scores and I see we’re down at half. Reading the comments doesn’t make it seem like it’s worth staying up for.

KetamineCal's avatar

Started down 10-0. We are not on Louisville's level.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

We’re not even close unfortunately.

ShanghaiDave93's avatar

I do like a good reality check for this team, especially early in the season when we have time to regroup and respond. We lose below 15 it’s a good learning experience we can then build on

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The reality check is one thing.

The fact that we are not even close to this level is of larger concern.

Finn's avatar

Like Bell’s shooting but his defense is suspect

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It’s basically nonexistent.

mrjpark's avatar

Basketball version of Masses, haha. Got his block for the stats, but has been avoiding all the hard work in between.

I feel like he's essentially a streaky shooter that we can't even hope to know what to expect.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I like Bell as a catch and shoot guy off the bench. That’s it. Any other role is beyond him. He doesn’t defend, he doesn’t board…occasionally gets a block as a help defender.

Camden lacks the athleticism to play v these types of guys. Dort can’t hang with these bigs.
