Cal vs. Syracuse Football Insta-Recap & Rate the Game: Bears Lose 33-25
Syracuse dominates Cal on both sides of the ball, put up 471 yards on the Bears
After a slow start, the California Golden Bears (5-5, 1-5 ACC) lost 33-25 to the Syracuse Orange (7-3, 4-3 ACC).
California gained only 29 yards in the first quarter as the offense struggled to make an impact. The Golden Bears' only score in the first half came from a special teams play, a 75-yard run from scrimmage by running back Jaivian Thomas early in the second quarter to bring the score to 7-13.
But any momentum Thomas' score, in which he reached the end zone untouched, might have given California was quickly lost.
On the next drive, Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord led his team down the field for a 75-yard touchdown drive, capped off by running back LeQuint Allen, Jr.'s one-yard score. Allen, Jr. earned 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns carrying the rock.
California quarterback Fernando Mendoza struggled early and had a slow start. The signal-caller threw two interceptions in the first period and finished the day with 225 passing yards and a touchdown thrown.
Despite the close final scoreline, Syracuse dominated on both sides of the ball. The Orange offense controlled the game's pace, winning the day in time of possession 38:41 to 21:19 and 471 total yards, including 299 against the Bears in the first half alone. Syracuse was a perfect four-for-four on fourth-down conversions Saturday afternoon.
