Cal Women's Basketball Bounces Back After Missouri Heartbreak with 92-42 Rout of San Jose State
A feel good, get right win
Earlier in the week, Cal Women’s Basketball lost a heartwrencher in the ACC/SEC challenge against Missouri. The Bears had chances to close, including having possession with a one point lead and 12 seconds on the clock. One turnover and Tigers basket later, Cal was on the unfortunate end of their only giveaway of the half.
In what became an apparent mismatch mere minutes into their next game against San Jose State, the Bears rebounded well from their heartbreak in Columbia. Cal started the game against the winless Spartans on a 11-0 run, forcing an early timeout from first year head coach Jonas Chatterton.
Things would keep cooking for the Bears, consistently using the size advantage that Sakima Walker had on multiple possessions. There was no let up on the defensive end of the floor, holding San Jose State to a mere four points in the first quarter.
Cal continued to suffocate the Spartans, to the tune of a 29 point halftime lead. Mjracle Sheppard and Lulu Twidale got in on the party offensively while turning SJSU into a brick factory on defense.
The second half was more of a procession, with all 13 Bears eventually seeing the floor in what became a whopping 51 point lead late in the fourth quarter. Walk-on Sofia Bowes got her moment late with a nice bucket that put the cap on a day that moved Cal to 7-3 on the season.
Notes:
Cal out rebounded SJSU 55-30
number includes 22 offensive rebounds
Defensively, Cal never let San Jose State get more than 14 in a quarter
Won the paint battle 44-16 and continued to push the issue with the size advantage
The 92 points scored today are a season high, eclipsing the 76 scored against Harvard in the Raising the BAR Invitational
Cal returns to action Wednesday night at Haas against Idaho before heading down to Stanford for the ACC opener on Sunday.
