Update on the injury status and rehab of DL Brett Johnson
Good news for California fans and bad news for opposing offensive linemen.
After a car accident in April left DL Brett Johnson unable to play for the 2021 season, California fans pondered how in the hell we could make up for such a massive loss.
Cal Athletics and Brett himself provided an update on his rehab today—he’s “feeling great” so far and will be “back on the field as soon as possible”, though there is no official timeline yet.

That Brett is healing and rehabbing well is a huge win for the Bears as he will be critical member of our defensive line. Despite being forced into playing out of position at defensive tackle for the past two years, Johnson was a force in all 17 games with 13 starts and earned All-American and All-Pac-12 recognition. With Johnson likely to slide over to his natural position at defensive end whenever he returns, the sky is the limit for the once-long-haired havoc.
Looking forward to seeing you back on the field, Brett!
great news
A speedy recovery is indeed good news. On another front, I am wondering why this blog is not discussing the biggest news item to hit college football in decades. I am referring to the NIL debacle that threatens to permanently upend the sport. I fell on the floor this morning when I saw the sophomore QB from Alabama has already accrued $1 million, and he has not even been named the starter yet.
And then there is Kayvan Thibodeaux, a California kid who went to Oregon and has already amassed $100,000 in NIL through the auspices of Daddy Warbucks Phil Knight. This is going to further exacerbate the caste system of haves and have nots and threatens unity on every team. My Saturday golfing partner played tight end at Oregon State in the 70's, and he is telling me the end is near to what we all love about college football. Anyone else bothered by this?
