Could you enlighten us with some specific examples from cfb history, specifically with universities that had similar financial constraints and football culture in general, in which high school kids had some insider knowledge several months in advance of the university's head coach and AD turnover, and thus decided to decommit?

And if you could parse out the correlation and causation bit, to clearly show us that they are leaving specifically because they know the head coach will be gone -- and not simply because the team to them appears to be much worse than expected, and the trajectory not as upward as described, and they've simply been wooed away to greener, flashier pastures?

I'm willing to listen and learn. I typically just wait and see what happens, without having a particularly strong opinion about complex future events in which I have zero insight, but sure that could be considered in denial depending how you look at it.

If we can improve the trajectory by winning some more games, maybe we will be able to flip some other recruits and/or keep some of the other committed kids who have wandering eyes at this juncture.

"Wonder is this is the worst period of reununciations of Cal athletic scholarships as anyone can remember."

I don't really follow recruiting, but I can't imagine this is worse than the Toshpocalypse.

Could you please elaborate on who "dumpster muffin and coyote dude" are?

Love the username by the way lol

5* Stefon Diggs was supposed to come too. It was worse because Tosh was a local and former Cal player himself. Not just some random guy.

I think this has been discussed here before but it's probably better to spend those vacant scholarships on some quality JUCO or transfer portal action, if you can.

Agreed.

Utah and ASU have had some key impact players who came from the JC ranks.

Just look at UCLA with Charbonnet!

And grad transfers. Like Webb and Bimage

But...but... we won??

Maybe we can flip some of our opponents’ commits… let’s hope

Can we put “commit” in quotes, please?

Good point. What happens if we keep winning? Will these guys come back into the fold? OSU game is pretty important next week to see if we have momentum on both sides of the ball.

I googled a bit and it looks like it happens occasionally - there is a case where a recruit flipped from Michigan to Alabama and then signed with Michigan ultimately. So it's not unheard of.

who's currently slated to replace garbers next year and is he any good?

Expand full comment

Garbers technically has a year of eligibility left. Lots of discussion is already been had here on whether we *want* Garbers to come back next year.

If he's gone, it'll probably be a battle between the physically-talented-but-green Kai Millner out of Arizona and the no-physical-talent-but-great-mind Zach Johnson. Millner was recruited by Musgrave, if that gives him any advantage. There's also the possibility of dipping into the portal, though the amount of portal QBs who can process what the Musgrave offense demands is small.

Never feels good to lose a recruit and this recent mass exodus is surely a bad sign but losing Moi is not disruptive given the talent and depth currently on the DL.

This year's class is blown to bits and, IMO, Cal needs to attempt a fix through the portal at the end of the year.

That said, the real damage has yet to be felt or realized. It is next year's class ('23) that may be awful from the start if Cal can not get to .500 this year (no small feat). So the worse may yet be to come. Two poor cycles in a row, potentially, and Cal is in a world of hurt.

And this doesn't take into account what may happen at the end of this year when current players may decide to transfer thereby putting Cal in an even worse situation.
