Collin Morikawa finishes tied for fourth at the 2024 PGA Championship
Another impressive performance by the Cal alum at a major tournament.
Collin Morikawa continues his run as best Cal golfer of his time, as he landed his second straight top five major finish at the PGA Championship in Valhalla.
After three great rounds for Morikawa that put him in the final group on Saturday, then into a tie for the lead going into Sunday, his putter betrayed him on the final round, as he didn’t manage a single birdie through the first 17 holes. It would have been hard to keep up with eventual winner Xander Schauffele (a major record -21), but his struggle with the putts did him in.
Morikawa finished in a tie for third at the 2024 Masters in Augusta. It is his ninth top-ten finish and fifth top-five finish at a major, all within the span of five years, and he’s still only 27. The Cal Bear keeps on racking up results, and it seems like a matter of time before he ends up winning his third major.
As for our other Cal alum, Max Homa finished tied for 35th at -8, and Byeong Hun An tied for 43rd at -6.
His iron play was little off. He usually gets close enough to the pin for makable putts but not yesterday. Also, he really ought to return to his original putting grip. This "saw" grip is not as effective as the one he started out with, which was the conventual grip.
It turned out to be a really nice day here so I only saw parts of the front nine. What I saw he played solid but every birdie putt was 25 or 30 feet so not slam dunk chances. Still, fourth in a major is nothing to sneeze at.
