Back despite popular demand, Oski Disciple’s Question of the Day. Why do people constantly need someone to hold their beer? Can’t they just rest it on a table?
The Palisades fire is threatening the Getty Villa museum. They say they've done fire prevention over the last couple of years to clear brush from around the villa so it should be OK. There has been some spot fire around the grounds I think, but news says they turned on all watering systems around the grounds and they have state of the air handling in the museum to keep smoke out.
There is also a fire in Altadena but luckily it is NE of where my sister lives.
i always aspired to be a good enough skier to truly enjoy this place and go down the famed KT-22 runs. never got that good and at this age i am slowly down in terms of my ski ability and desire to take chances.
that being said, the place is huge and has something for everyone and my favorite Tahoe resort aside from maybe Homewood where the views are incomparable.
My family had a house in Squaw Valley and we lived with two other families. I was the second youngest out of the kids in that house - one ended up being on the US Olympic ski team and two were on the Junior Olympic team. One learns really quickly to ski when you have to chase those kids - which involved lots of terrifying runs for me. KT-22 is a terrible run because the backside "Saddle" is faces the sun and is usually a sloppy mush because the run isn't that high up them valley. The other side is the "Nose" and "the Chute". The nose was impossibly steep. The chute was more doable but was still a sphincter-puckering 38 degree decline and had an infamous tree at the bottom of the funnel that loved to injure skiers who fell on it. The mountain got its name because it's short for "Kick Turn 22", the number of kick turns one of the early skiers did to basically avoid skiing the chute.
one friend from Cal had a family house at Homewood which is why we spent a bunch of time there.
i didnt really get started skiing until about 13. HAG and I went a couple times in HS and college. he was much better than i was to start except that we more or less took a 25 yr break from skiing while having kids. i managed to trick my family and wife into doing it every year.
The indoor golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy started last night. It was televised on ESPN. It's match play played on a golf simulator for tee and approach shots, then onto a regulation size short play area for chipping and putting. The green has mechanisms underneath it so that they can change the contour of the green hole-to-hole. Pretty fun to watch, especially since the whole thing (3 singles matches for 15 holes each) lasted about 2 hours total. The crowd was enthusiastic (think Phoenix Open light) and the players were enthusiastic. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works long term.
Mya Lauzon of the No. 6 California women's gymnastics team became the first Golden Bear to be named ACC Gymnast of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Lauzon got her senior season started off right at the American Gold Collegiate Classic last Saturday with four podium finishes in the last, first meet of her career. In addition to leading Cal to a pair of wins over two old conference foes in No. 10 UCLA and No. 19 Oregon State – with a team score of 196.275 that was the sixth-highest score across the NCAA during week one - Lauzon also earned four podium finishes and a share of two event titles.
Adding to the list of embarrassing losses this season, the Lakers fell to a Mavs team without either Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving on Tuesday, 118-97. After heading into this quick two-game road trip having won eight of 11 games, the purple and gold dropped both contests in Texas.
The Lakers big three struggled as a whole on the night with the trio of Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Austin Reaves combining to shoot 18-43 from the field.
To put it bluntly, the Golden State Warriors had no excuse to lose to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. The Warriors were well-rested: they were playing their sixth consecutive game at home, they didn’t play on Monday, and you could argue that they didn’t play on Sunday either, when they barely showed up to get run off the court by the Sacramento Kings.
Jazz down by 3 at home to the Hawks and get the ball back with 8.1 seconds after two clutch free-throws by Trae Young. Jazz get the ball inside the paint, but the Hawks almost steal - poking the ball outside the key where Collin Sexton drills a three pointer with 4 seconds left. Hawks inbound quickly to Trae Young...
Trump asks Canada to join the US. Canada says sorry, no. Trump also threatens to militarily invade Panama for the canal and Greenland for the... he realizes it's a winter desert with no viable mineral or tourist possibilities, right?
I disagree with this article. It's along the same vein as "there are trillions of dollars of minerals on the moon". Earth mineral resources are not rare. Minerals are commodities, with global prices being pretty similar for the same quality of mineral. Mineral resources that are economically viable to sell at global prices and net out the cost for mining rights, direct extraction costs, and indirect logistics costs are much, much rarer. Trust me, if it was economically viable to extract minerals in the far, far north of Canada, they would.
All true, but some are more rare, OR more environmentally disruptive to extract, than others. Then too, there is speculation, and Trump pyramid schemes to consider. I'm a believer in the follow the money (and political power/leverage) trail, and when that doesn't appear to be the case, it usually still is, just well hidden. Or it can be fabricated.
He just wants to generate headlines in which he sounds tough. He has no actual interest in doing these things, and to the extent they are the product of any thoughts or strategy, they are stupid and embarrassing. He got the headlines though - win for him!!!
I actually somewhat disagree. Distracting from the sentencing is an agenda item, but whatever your feelings about Trump, you have to remember he is a businessman, and Greenland represents exploitable resources. And we know he won't care about how the resources get exploited, or the consequences, as long as profit gets pulled out of the ground, so not polluting an ecosystem won't be a consideration for him. And it is a consideration, and therefore a cost, so long as he doesn't control it.
For those complaining about too many non-CFB playoff bowls, get over it.
The 33 non-CFP bowls on ABC/ESPN this year averaged 2.7M viewers, a +14% YoY increase, and the largest audience since 2019-20 (pre-Covid). 14 of the 33 bowls hit at least a 5-year high and five hit a 10-year high.
Fox & CW's dabbling into the market were both successful as well, so expect more interest there as well.
There is an increasing interest, even if some people claim they aren't interested, and that will drive the immediate future. More importantly, what's the better alternative? (Hint: there isn't one.)
Then all bowls should knock it off with the demands for ticket guarantees from the invited teams/institutions. Clearly, the bowls can fund their expenses including bowl payouts, through TV revenues and still turn a profit. If TV viewership is up 14% YOY then crying poor mouth is dishonest.
In what alternative universe do you live in where anyone believes promoters are totally honest if additional $s can be made along the way with an alternative version of some of the facts? ;-)
Dook's Cooper Flagg posterizes Pitt's Guillermo Diaz Graham on the way to their 76-47 over Pitt. Pitt beat Cal by 9. Cal plays Duke on Feb 12. Also, never mind his double-dribble.
Back despite popular demand, Oski Disciple’s Question of the Day. Why do people constantly need someone to hold their beer? Can’t they just rest it on a table?
Why don't they just finish downing it, and then do whatever before starting the next one?
You don't want to spill the beer when doing something stupid.
i think you need to have someone you trust "hold your beer." if you put it on the table you never know if you will get it back!
Even if you hold it, someone may use a straw to drink it when you're not looking.
If you have a friend who would drink beer with a straw, they're not really your friend.
But Oski is all of our's friend!
But my friend with the beer hat is a nice guy, even if he's a bit goofy!
