In the early 16th century, explorer/conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa helped the Spanish conquer areas where current day Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and parts of Colombia. Over the next thirty or so years, the Spanish conquered the Incans in Peru - which created huge supplies of silver and gold, which was then exported out of modern day Panama city via overland train. The Scots, who didn’t want to be left behind, wanted to start a colony where Balboa landed, the Gulf of Darién. The Darien scheme was so expensive that it consumed about one-fifth of all of Scotland’s wealth. The scheme was a massive disaster: 80% of the colonists were dead within a year and eventually failed for good after 11 years. It failed so badly and took so much of Scotland’s wealth with it, weakening Scotland to the point where it lost its sovereignty via the Acts of Union 1707 eight years later. Control of the area was consolidated by the Spanish. About a century later, a sailor who once sailed to Darien had suggested the name for a town in central Connecticut to replace “Middlesex Parish”. And this is why a WASPy town in Connecticut is named after a place that is linked with a massive economic failure.
I’ve held onto a Star Wars poster that was given to me in middle school in the mid-80’s by a good buddy of Pa Chitwood’s that worked in advertising and was into memorabilia. It was in a rock solid poster tube, and I’ve literally traipsed it all around the country, from the East Bay>UCSB>Saratoga Springs, NY>San Francisco>back to Saratoga Springs II>Phoenix>back to Saratoga Springs III>San Diego>back to Santa Barbara…basically the story of my residence life. I finally just had it framed and gave it to my 10 year old twin nephews to hang on their wall.
The thing could be worth something…or it could be a re-pro and be worth nothing. Who knows…but it’s cool all the places it’s been…
I used to have fighter jet posters in my room growing up. I think in college I had the Budweiser poster of the 3 women lying down with the Budweiser can swimsuits.

Years ago one of my nephews ran in the Junior Olympics cross-country nationals in Providence and I flew up to watch. It snowed a little the day before and it did not go well for the California boy.
I spent one incredibly drunken St. Patty’s night in Providence back in 2016…went to the East regional for the Arizona/Wichita St 11/6 matchup…the Shockers D smothered the Wildcats.
I remember visiting the Shay’s Rebellion historical site with an incredible hangover on the ride home to Saratoga along a rural road in Western MA. Danny didn’t like the taxes…

Anyone knowledgeable about soccer that can suggest a young up and coming prospect who could turn out to be a phenom but isn’t there yet?
My nephew is big into soccer, and he & his teammates love the World Cup and all the usual suspects of players (Mbappe, Pulisic, etc.)
I want to buy him a jersey, but maybe of a younger prospect that no one else would have the jersey for…if this was baseball, I could help. But I’m not all that savvy with EPL.
Darwin Nunez is the definition of raw talent. He's got all the athleticism one could ask for and has flashes of brilliance that are negated by lulls of unawareness and savvy. Once he puts it together, look out.
The Golden State Warriors were unable to build any momentum from their blowout victory over the Spurs. Instead, they lost 132-118 to the Chicago Bulls despite making more than 40% of their shot attempts from three.
The Warriors got off to a sloppy start, committing three turnovers that the Bulls turned into 7 points in the first five minutes of action. Chicago built an early 15-5 lead and was ahead 35-20 at the end of the first quarter.
The Dubs second-unit did an impressive job cutting into the Bulls lead in the following quarter. Jordan Poole, Donte DiVincenzo, and Anthony Lamb were all solid off the bench for Golden State and helped the Warriors go on an 11-2 run and an 18-5 run that helped them take a 61-59 lead at the half.

CINCINNATI -- — The ball went right to Sam Hubbard, and the defensive end took off down the field. All the way down the field in his hometown.
On an unforgettable wild-card run.
Hubbard returned Tyler Huntley's fumble 98 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown in the fourth quarter, helping Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens 24-17 in the first round of the AFC playoffs on Sunday night.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- — Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills opened the season with Super Bowl aspirations.
One week into the playoffs, their objective remains in sight — but barely.
Allen shrugged off a three-turnover outing, and the three-time defending AFC East champion Bills avoided a major collapse by rallying for a 34-31 victory over the AFC’s seventh-seeded and injury-depleted Miami Dolphins in a wild-card playoff game on Sunday.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- — Trevor Lawrence's confidence somehow never wavered. Not after the first interception. Or the second. Or the third. Or even the fourth.
The generational quarterback simply delivered a generational comeback.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft followed four interceptions with four touchdown passes — one of the most improbable turnarounds in NFL postseason history — and rallied the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 31-30 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night.
Chargers should have hired Daboll. I don’t understand why Lombardi doesn’t roll Herbert out more or scheme to use his legs. Herbert was a good runner at Oregon and is a mobile guy, they should use him him in the running game like the Giants use Daniels or the Bills use Allen or the Eagles use Hurts.
Instead, Lombardi treats Herbert like he is Phillip Rivers and a statue.
Exactly. In 2022, Justin Herbert accumulated less than half of the rushing yards he had in ‘21, with 0 rushing TDs…none. He is a solid athlete, and can motor, especially for a guy his size. To not use that mobility is plain silly.
I watched pretty much ever Charger game, and what struck me was the lack of innovation by Lombardi. Sure, the O-line was banged up and Keenan and Williams were in and out of the lineup, but there was no imagination to the scheme whatsoever.
Yep all of this. I can’t believe I am going to say this but Musgrave would be a solid upgrade over Lombardi at OC. I didn’t understand why Staley even hire Lombardi, who was a career assistant coach and his only experience as an OC came with the Lions, where he was fired after 1 season.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- — Brock Purdy got flushed out of the pocket, spun back the other direction and found a wide-open Elijah Mitchell for the score that put San Francisco in control for good.

ATHENS, Georgia -- Georgia football player Devin Willock and a recruiting staff member were killed in a car wreck in Athens early Sunday morning, the university confirmed in a statement.
Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, started two games on the offensive line this past season. Recruiting staff member Chandler LeCroy also was killed, according to the university.
Alabama men's basketball player Darius Miles and another man have been charged with capital murder in connection with an early morning shooting near campus that killed a 23-year-old woman.
Miles was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail around 6:45 p.m. ET Sunday, an official with the jail told ESPN. In a statement Sunday, the university said Miles, a junior reserve forward from Washington, D.C., is no longer on the team.
(CNN) The University of California Police Department has opened an investigation after a human skeleton was found on the UC Berkeley campus, officials say.
UC Berkeley police were alerted to the skeleton Tuesday, according to a statement shared with CNN. The “skeletonized” human remains were found “in a building which has not been occupied for many years” on the school’s Clark Kerr Campus, about a mile from the main campus.
“It is not clear how many years they have been there,” police said in the statement. “There are no outstanding cases of missing individuals from the campus community.”
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has also opened an investigation into the remains, according to the statement. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
“We understand that there are many questions and we anticipate that the coroner’s report will provide additional information,” said police. “We do not anticipate this investigation will disrupt resident activities at the Clark Kerr Campus.”
My roommate at Clark Kerr frosh year was missing for almost 18 hours. Turns out he had drunk a whole bottle of wine that someone had given to him at a party. Apparently he passed out somewhere outside and was escorted back to the halls by a conscientious UC policeman, but he had lost a shoe in the process. A couple of us thought we might find his 'skeleton' eventually since we had no idea what had happened to him.
My floor mate my freshman year in Unit 1, Cheney went to a rave with friends in Oakland. He didn’t want to go but after a lot peer pressure he reluctantly went. He didn’t come home that night or morning, no one had heard from him or knew where he was.
He eventually gets back to the dorms around 1pm on crutches. Apparently a fight broke out at the rave and someone not only pulled a gun but unfortunately they decided to shoot. My floor mate was nearby and he was shot in the leg.
LOS ANGELES – Cal rugby won its 17th consecutive Dennis Storer Classic tournament title following a 45-0 victory over UCLA on Sunday afternoon. The Bears shutout all three of their opponents, outscoring them 165-0 this weekend.
"Pretty solid start, I thought we played together quite well for the first time out," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "Lots to work on, but a solid start."
LOS ANGELES – Cal took control of the game early with a 15-2 run out the gate behind a hot start from Kemery Martín, who had eight first quarter points, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell on the road 87-70 to No. 8 UCLA on Sunday. Martin tied her career-high with five 3-pointers for the third time in her career and second time this season. Jayda Curry and Leilani McIntosh joined Martín in double-figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. The Bears also got contributions from Peanut Tuitele, who had nine points and seven rebounds and Karisma Ortiz, who had two 3-pointers for the first time this season. The Bears shot 47.1 percent from deep, their second highest mark of the season.
BERKELEY – Work on the field at Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium will have to wait for the rain in Northern California to finally let up before the California baseball team can officially have its first day on the field. However, the weather didn't stop the Golden Bears from taking infield and defensive drills at California Memorial Stadium and batting practice in the cages for their first official workout of the 2023 campaign.
As the Bears enter the sixth season of the Mike Neu era, Cal will look to its deep and talented sophomore class to help lead the squad back to the regionals for the first time since 2019.

Chargers gonna Charger.
I went to bed at halftime. Imagine my surprise the next morning.
At a minimum the Chargers need to fire their OC Lombardi and should just fire Staley all together.
Lombardi is a boob - he can’t scheme for schitt. Other than Carter, the team really lacks speed…but yet Lombardi can’t get anyone open.
I think you’re right, Golden, Staley needs to go, too…he calls the defensive plays, so it would be laughable if he schittcanned the DC.
Not all blown leads are considered equal…can’t lose a playoff game when you win the turnover battle 5-0.
