A friend's daughter returned to school through NYC from Europe. She is an American citizen, but her dad is Colombian. DHS strip-searched her while also apologizing, saying that policy was to strip search her because of her name. She had done nothing wrong. She was humiliated and understandably cried. Fear and intimidation are what they want.

ICE fatally shot another US citizen. This time it was Alex Pretti. I dunno about you, but this looked like straight up murder. This is what tyranny looks like.

SGBear's avatar

It feels like a lifetime, but it's only been one year under this administration.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

indeed.

on the other hand, the Fox news cover story yesterday painted quite the opposite picture. i think there is some other word we need other than tyranny.

The far-left network that helped put Alex Pretti in harm's way, then made him a martyr

The right to assemble in protest is a core constitutional freedom that does not disappear when you call it “far left.”

Perhaps analogous to the claims that slaves really enjoyed being slaves.

we got 10-12 inches of snow mostly on Sun afternoon and a little more overnight. mostly all soft flakey powdery snow -- not even good for snowmen.

and then there was a crusty layer that fell on top, but not terribly icy.

the roads seem fine. already ventured out driving once and going out to meet someone for lunch.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

NYC public schools have a snow day .. sort of.

500k elementary kids are supposed to stay home and go to Zoom school. the worst of all worlds.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Sometime around 2013, many Louisville schools created "snow day packets". Before this, schools would add days at the end of the year if snow days exceeded some value. Parents hated this, allegedly, because they already made vacation plans and didn't want to have to change them.

Due to the extensive busing network and only major streets initially being plowed, any threat of snow or freezing rain can be a snow day. So, there were years where either planned days off, like teacher in service days, were changed to in school instruction, or days were added to the end.

To prevent this, snow day packets were created and the teachers would tell the kids to work on packet X.

I assume since Covid, they still do this vs zoom days.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i have come to realize that the disruption of a parents' plans (childcare, vacation, sickness, snow day) are more important than school.

and different parents put different emphasis and priority on different things so there is no way to get it right.

one of the most interesting things about the politics in India is that Modi's face is literally on 25% of the billboards across the country.

i get the impression that Trump sees something like this is and is kind of jealous. this motivation is why he wants to rename everything after himself and continually be in the news with more and more exposure.

California _

The California Republic, commonly known as the Bear Flag Republic, was a short-lived unrecognized breakaway state from Mexico, that existed from June 14, 1846 to July 9, 1846. It militarily controlled an area north of San Francisco, in and around what is now Sonoma County in California.

That era is fascinating. De Anza had explored the SF Bay and put up a fort - the Presidio. As a reward for service, one of De Anza's men - Luis Peralta - was granted land across from the fort (Contra Costa) - "the other shore". Peralta never lived on the land, but his four sons did and they built their haciendas/ranches in the east bay. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was supposed to grant land rights to Californios like the Peralta family, but they squabbled internally and the empire fell apart. Vicente's ranch became Berkeley. Domingo's hacienda became St. Mary's College, Antonio had Fruitvale, Ignacio had San Leando, and the daughters had other properties. This is why Vicente, Domingo, De Anza, Peralta are all road names in Berkeley.

SGBear's avatar

All the Haciendas were destroyed in the great Hayward earthquake of 1868. We all know what happened in 1868.
