a good song from Anything Goes (Cole Porter 1934) which we watched this week
tonight we are going to this ...
Harry Connick Jr: A Celebration of Cole Porter
For five days only, famed singer, musician, and actor Harry Connick, Jr., takes the legendary Met stage for a program celebrating Cole Porter, one of America’s greatest songwriters. Accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra and modern multimedia production elements, the Grammy and Emmy Award–winning performer brings his inimitable style to beloved Porter standards from the Great American Songbook, offering an unmissable limited-time opportunity to experience the acclaimed presentation that won raves on Broadway in 2019.
Mrs Slug and I saw Harry Connick Jr at Zellerbach the night before we saw him in SF (at the Orpheum? not sure). Pretty sure it was early 90s as we didn't yet have kids. Anyhow, the majority of the audience were students and they kept asking for just another song. At some point, Connick said (paraphrasing), "You really ought to buy a ticket to tomorrow night's show!" to which a large portion responded, "It's sold out!" Connick visibly blanched and then obliged with 3 more songs, as I recall. He seemed literally taken aback by the response, which suggested to me that he didn't realize he was quite that popular.
Mrs Slug likes his music; I do, too. We'll listen to it from time to time.
I look at pictures of my kid and really miss them from all the different ages. I do not miss being sick all the time from whatever cooties were brought back from school.
What if we find out that we're not playing Wagner College from Staten Island, but actually playing the Wagner Group, the Russian private military group run until recently by Yevgeny Prigozhin?
I can't wait to have this traditional power and natural rival come to Berkeley, although I dread having their rabid fan base taking up a third or more of Memorial Stadium. A titanic clash in the making.
2026 is going to be a weird OOC season. We open at home against UCLA. Our lone OOC away game is to a place I don't want to go to: BYU. Then we play Wagner at home. Then we have a bye-week ahead of a home game against UNLV. All in all, that's a tough schedule. Thanks Jim Knowlton, I hate it.
BYU is actually a great road trip. Great atmosphere, friendly fans, easy access (I realize Cal fans have no concept of this), the weather will probably be great in September, and the Salt Lake valley generally is a great area. Only downside for Cal will be BYU is probably going to be really good, and this is probably a loss in waiting.
BERKELEY – California rugby is set to host Arizona for a midday contest Saturday in Berkeley, its third match in a six-fixture homestand. The Golden Bears and Wildcats will kick off at Noon PT at Witter Rugby Field with a reserve-grade contest set to immediately follow.
The No. 8 California women's gymnastics team is set for its inaugural ACC road meet as the Golden Bears head to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on defending conference champion and No. 21 NC State. First routine is set for 1 p.m. PT on ACCNX/ESPN+ at Reynolds Coliseum.
BOSTON – Former California standout and current Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown will play in his fourth NBA All-Star Game next month after he was named an Eastern Conference reserve Thursday. The All-Star appearance will bring Brown back to the Bay Area, with the event set to be held at Chase Center in San Francisco on Feb. 16.
The California men's tennis team brings a perfect 4-0 record to Los Angeles this weekend when the Golden Bears renew acquaintances with No. 25 UCLA (2-2) and USC (3-1) in a pair of nonconference dual matches. This marks the first meetings between Cal and its former Pac-12 Conference opponents since the Bears joined the ACC and UCLA and USC joined the Big Ten.
I want to begin this month's newsletter by sending our thoughts and well-wishes to everyone in our Cal Family and beyond who has been affected by the devastating and tragic wildfires that have caused such unimaginable destruction in Southern California. We know there are countless alums, families of current student-athletes and so many more connected to our athletic department and university that are still dealing with the crisis, and you are all on our minds. I'm grateful for the Cameron Institute – notably Director of Community Engagement & Partnerships Jessie Stewart – for partnering with the Golden State Valkyries and Bay FC to participate in a supply drive to support relief efforts in the Greater Los Angeles area. We know there is a long road ahead to rebuild the affected areas and our Cal Family is with you every step of the way.
The California football team has agreed to future nonconference games in a home-and-home series with San Jose State, along with a single game in Berkeley against Wagner. The Golden Bears will host the Spartans on Sept. 9, 2028, and travel to San Jose on Sept. 13, 2031. Cal is set to face the Seahawks on Sept. 19, 2026.
Probably could have got in on the ground floor of building a regional rivalry with Sacramento St before they become an FBS team by booking them for Cals FCS opponent.
I did not realize that Wagner College is located in (on?) Staten Island, NY. It's enrollment in 2023 was 1,947.
Wagner's home field is Hameline Field at Wagner Stadium, capacity is 3,300. Looking at the satellite image on Google Maps, it seems the stands are bleachers on the west side of the field.
I hear you. Although arguably we gave up that facade in 2011 when Cal played Presbyterian College (enrollment ~1,200), based in Clinton, South Carolina.
That game was at AT&T Park (now Oracle Park) in SF during the Cal Memorial renovation. Cal 63, Presbyterian 12. Around 34,000 attended.
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Reniya Kelly scored 16 points and No. 15 North Carolina pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat No. 19 California 65-52 on Thursday, spoiling a banner night for the Golden Bears' Ioanna Krimili. It marked Cal's first home loss of the season.

POP
This candy is created by the same company that makes Dubble Bubble. It's an above-average lollipop with below-average gum in the middle.
In related news, I take childlike delight in that the "Chupa Chup" brand essentially means "Sucky Suck" in Spanish.
Unlike the Tootsie Pop which is a below average lollipop with a below average hunk of chocolate.

Ex and I saw Harry Connick Jr at the Concord Pavilion way back in the mid 90s. He put in a great show. HSB, you should have a great time tonight.

Is not doing a background check on which Wagner something that would finally get Jim fired?
My loudest laugh of the day!
We're embracing the SEC OOC philosophy.
Yet we'll still only win by 4.
See above comment re now I can't mock my SEC (GA/AL) friends anymore... and that was so fun!

I doubt the Wagner fan base will take up a third or more of Memorial Stadium, but probably will comprise more than a third of the actual attendance.
And remember, last season Wagner lost to an Ivy League school by a final of 24-6.
🤣
Go Bears!!! As January ends it's worth noting that we are still in possession of the Stanfurd Axe.
