Tried a new pho place; we have dozens of options for Vietnamese street food in the East Bay. Pho and Grill, in Hayward, is a nice addition to the pho map I keep in my car. The #9 (rare flank, brisket) bowl hit the spot.
Ha, well I’m so lo tech, I just plotted spots on a sheet of paper covering Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward, Alameda. I have a grading system I use and I note those on the “map”.
one of the fun parts about this house in Burlington is getting to explore lots of new restaurants in a small city that has pretty good food.
we went to a pretty casual Mediterranean place last night called the Wise Fool. food and drink were great only to be outdone by their graphic design on their store logo
Goha the Wise Fool (also known as Joha, Djoha and Nasredin Hoja) is a beloved folk character in Middle Eastern lore. Friendly, convivial and not the brightest bulb in the pack, Goha goes about life always getting himself into sticky (and often comical) situations but always finding his way out of them. Each of his stories has a kernel of a life lesson embedded within, and through a mix of self deprecation, pithy anecdotes and harmless hijinks, he teaches us not to take ourselves or life too seriously, but to just enjoy the little things and the people around us
I did my first run across one of the local bridges. The bike trail was cleared over the weekend so was safe to cross. The Potomac is totally frozen over. I can’t tell how thick but there’s no open water. It’s supposed to get above 32 today for the first time in the last ten days.
this morning i saw 4 people ice skating on the frozen part of Lake Champlain. my cousins in northern Sweden do this all the time, starting in about Nov usually.
it sort of looks like the Hoth Ice Planet when you look out over the lake - which of course make me very happy.
This dry January business is terrible for bar business. And bars have it tough already because the younger generations don't drink like they used to. Therefore, in support of these small businesses and their hard working bartenders, I hereby commit to an emphatic re-wetting of January 2027!
I'm not sure how long it's going to take for brewers, vintners, and distillers to bounce back from the trend of lessening alcohol consumption. An important point that's often overlooked is that WHO now says that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption and recommends minimizing intake to reduce risks. That announcement got some press play when it was made and not so much now, but I think it confirms what many people either felt or believed about alcohol consumption.
I think it's notable that history tends to rhyme and in the case of alcohol consumption, the trend could be downward for now, but I would expect that at some point it will tick up again. There's no such thing as total abstinence. The US tried imposing abstinence through a law enforcement approach in the 1920s and look how that experiment turned out.
The Pitt Season 1 (18/19 HBO Max) - I binged a bunch of episodes over the weekend and finished episode 10. I commented after I watched the first episode a couple weeks ago, but in case you don't know about this show, it's basically a combination of ER and 24. It's 15 episodes that covers 15 hours in a Pittsburg ER. It's really good. Fast paced and covers not only patients but also the staff's lives. I think Season 2 is currently ongoing.
a whole new generation of cadets, but it seems that they already know everything like how to save a ship from aliens better than the commissioned officers.
so it is mostly the social and romantic drama that you are watching in Federation of Planets setting
this continues to remain good. i heard some people say they stopped watching Season 3 because the acting got bad. not sure what the complaint was.
also, aside from the obvious focus on geopolitical drama, this show does a great job talking about how hard and painful it is to be married (despite the benefits) - something i can relate to after 27 yrs of ups and downs.
The No. 23 California Golden Bears (5-4) defeated UC Davis 7-0, while suffering a loss to No. 14 UCLA 4-3, at Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday.
To begin the morning, Cal took a 1-0 lead after wins on courts one and two. On court two, Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and Andrea Meduri won 6-3, while teammates Tiago Silva and Timofey Stepanov clinched the doubles point with a 7-6(3) victory.
PALOS VERDES - California women's golf opened their 2026 spring season Sunday in round one of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge. Senior Adora Liu shot an even par 71 in the first round, finishing the day in seventh place.
Playing without starters Taylor Barnes and Puff Morris, the California women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 7 Louisville before ultimately losing 71-59 at Haas Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. Gisella Maul, who had a career-high 19 points, hit a 3-pointer that gave the Golden Bears (13-10, 4-6 ACC) the lead midway through the third quarter and they stayed within striking distance the whole game, but the Cardinals (21-3, 11-0) were able to answer with timely runs. Down just six points with 8:41 left in the game, the Bears gave up an 8-0 run and were unable to get any closer.
BERKELEY – Freshman Despoina Drakotou fell one goal short of tying the California women's water polo single-game record and the No. 4 Golden Bears rolled to a 25-9 victory over No. 17 Pacific on Saturday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
BERKELEY – The 16th-ranked California women's tennis team opened the dual-match season 2-0 after defeating 20th-ranked USC 4-2 on Saturday evening under the lights at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal All-American Mao Mushika defeated the Trojans' Emma Charney 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the victory.
LOS ANGELES - California rugby defeated the UCLA Bruins 60-14 Saturday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Junior Nate Comiskey led the Bears with three tries, while Chris Biller, who came in for Ryan Wenstrom in the 18th minute, added two tries. Seven different players scored tries in the victory, while freshman Oliver Sinclair added five conversions.
CORAL GABLES, FLA. -- The California men's basketball team put in a fierce final four minutes of road work to take a late lead and then fend off host Miami for a key 86-85 Golden Bear victory over the Hurricanes today in Coral Gables, Fla. John Camden finished with a season-high 26 points for Cal, and Justin Pippen dished out a career-high eight assists to help the Bears secure the road win. Cal is now 16-6 overall and 4-5 in ACC play, while Miami goes to 17-5, 6-3.
Week 14 rankings come out. No votes for Cal yet, but Miami picks up four votes in the AP poll after beating stanfurd and losing to the Mighty Golden Bears?
I'm so appreciative of this team. They're gritty, smart, and they play with heart. I really missed it when Cal wasn't playing meaningful basketball games in February (it's been 9 years!) and I'm f'ing thrilled to be back checking the bubble watch sites every day.
BERKELEY – The No. 5 California women's swimming & diving team took No. 3 Stanford down to the wire in both program's regular-season finale Saturday. The Cardinal prevailed 154-145 in the Senior Day dual meet that was decided in the final lap of the final event at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
SEATTLE – Seven of California track & field's distance runners returned to Washington's Dempsey Indoor on Saturday for the famed Mile City meet, one day after recording five program top-10 times at the UW Invitational. There, they closed out the weekend with another set of fine performances, including another pair of Golden Bear top 10s.
Speaking of T&F, I watched the Millrose Games on tv yesterday. An Australian 19 year old kid won the Wanamaker Mile in 3:47+. That is fast, especially on a short indoor track.
PALOS VERDES - The California Women's golf team opens their 2026 spring season at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. on Sunday.

STANFORD – No. 20 California women's gymnastics (6-3, 2-1 ACC) posted its highest score of the season in its 196.975-196.825 loss to No. 9 Stanford (3-1, 3-0 ACC) Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Golden Bears also recorded season highs on vault, balance beam and floor exercise.
[T&F] Bears Post 5 Program Top 10s At UW Invitationalhttps://calbears.com/news/2026/1/30/track-field-bears-post-5-program-top-10s-at-uw-invitational.aspx
SEATTLE – The California track & field distance squad turned in several standout performances Friday at the UW Invitational, the first of the Golden Bears' two days of competition this weekend at Dempsey Indoor. In total, Cal produced five new program top-10 entries from five different athletes, two of which also made the list of top-10 individual performances.
STANFORD – Senior Joshua Thai set the program record in the 3-meter dive and Yamato Okadome was a double-winner during the No. 5 California men's swimming & diving team's 189-119 loss at No. 8 Stanford on Friday afternoon that closed out the regular season.
We hope 2026 is off to a great start for you, as it is for your Golden Bears! With an impressive new group of football student-athletes and coaches, a number of Top 10 Olympic sport programs in action, a sold-out Haas Pavilion, a great men's basketball win over North Carolina, an exciting women's basketball victory over Notre Dame, and two thrilling hoops wins over Stanford, the momentum in Berkeley continues to build!
Ten members of the California men's and women's cross country teams have been named to the All-ACC Academic team, announced by the conference on Friday. Three Golden Bears have made the team for the third straight time (Addie Johnson, Sophie Tau, and Rowan FitzGerald), and Justin Pretre earned his fourth team selection, including selections from their respective track & field seasons.
I'm going to re-post the old CGB DBD dictionary tomorrow and try to get it on the front page. Hopefully it draws people back. Onward to 1000! (without Rishi and Twists fashion posts)
With a chance at redemption after a blown 3-0 lead in neighboring Edmonton, the Sharks stumbled once again against the Calgary Flames. Two points lost to a Calgary team that’s struggled to win this season feel like a bit more than that, considering how tight the Western Conference playoff race has become, but the Sharks will have to move on and find a way to salvage more points out of this road trip.
Game was Fri. Somehow they have 3 days off before their next game on Tues. They had so many early back to backs that I think they've played 2-3 more games than other teams around them in the standings.
This was a predictable, though fringe, outcome when amateurism collapsed, which it was bound to do.
You can't put legal restrictions on employment based on age or whether the employee has been previously paid or not. Cases like this will become more numerous over time.
It's my belief that college athletics is approaching a crisis based on the insistence of colleges and universities in sponsoring football teams. Football generates millions in revenue for FBS schools. But it is also an albatross in terms of scholarships and "counters" in roster spots that impacts Title IX compliance for individual NCAA-member institutions. It creates financial deficits because of those requirements for compliance. Very few FBS institutions turn a profit on intercollegiate athletics.
