For those that missed my late post last night, yesterday I blanked on the first row and got the word on the second. Today I tried starting with yesterday’s word. Got one in the right place in the first row. Had the same result on the second row and got the word on the third. Luck indeed.
On the text thread of my monthly Wordle competition, I remarked yesterday that we'd gone the whole month so far without anyone failing. Wanna guess how I did today?
i am not grumpy w/o coffee or desparately need it to get going. on the other hand, i do really enjoy the morning ritual of making coffee and easing into my morning.
in VT i decided to try a Chemex setup for the first time. it is pretty time consuming, which is exactly the type of "easing into my morning" process that makes me happy.
i am still getting the hang of it and it is quite fun and very flavorful coffee.
One of the prominent messages that the monk who lead the Walk for Peace made was to stay away from your lover, which is how he referred to your phone or other device, first thing in the morning. He said you can go to the bathroom, get some breakfast, take some deep breaths and then you can go to your device. After a couple days he smilingly said he wouldn’t be using lover to refer to your devices anymore.
I made the move to Chemex almost a year ago after being "curious" for decades. Got the three cup model which uses the half moon filters.....that took a bit to master adding another layer of tasks. I do like the "brighter taste".
I am mostly decaf for coffee in the light to medium roasts. Following the Chemex coffee I mix up some Matcha every morning.
One other thing about coffee grounds - I grind my beans *every morning*. I emphasize this because keeping your coffee in bean form until you need the grounds means you will have fresher beans, fresher grounds, better results. Grinding beans starts the clock on their peak flavors. Beans that have been ground at least 10 minutes have already started to lose their essential oils which give aroma and flavor. I inwardly cringe when someone gets their beans ground at a coffee store or at Costco or Safeway.
One of my nephews had nothing but a blade grinder. Blade grinders whack at the beans, creating many different sizes of coffee bean bits. Burr grinders crush the bean, creating grounds that are more uniform in size and releasing essential oils. Both the uniform size and releasing essential oils are what makes for a better cup of coffee.
I gifted him a burr grinder for an early Christmas present this past December.
TL;DR answer - It's about regulating the amount of water with your beans and creating a better cuppa.
More deets - It's more than just a question of capacity. For me, pour over is also about regulating the water to bean proportions and the timing. A Chemex is a brand-specific type of pour over carafe for brewing coffee. HSB's photo shows a mug, a Chemex carafe, and a gooseneck kettle.
I'm a little more precise than some folks. I use a coffee scale to measure out my beans *and* measure the amount of water that touches the grounds. I aim for a 16:1 ratio or something close to that (for example, 480 grams of water to 30 grams of coffee grounds). I also use the timer on my coffee scale to ensure I get an adequate amount of time on my bloom, which allows carbon dioxide created by the contact of hot water on the grounds to escape. 30 seconds is enough.
I used to do pour over without a scale and with a simple kettle that did not have a gooseneck. A gooseneck kettle allows me to better regulate the flow of water and upped my game tremendously. My results went from being hit-or-miss to being pretty much dialed in, in terms of quality results. When Mrs Slug drinks coffee (she's a tea person) she wants me to make it for her because she appreciates the results that much.
I also use a burr grinder to grind my beans (a Baratza Encore burr grinder if you want to get the benefit of a grinder motor doing the hard work for you; I've also used a Hario Skerton burr grinder when a motor is not available).
I did get No 1 a Sboly burr grinder. I think he generally uses a regular drip thing that goes over the cup. He also does have a method to pre-wet the filter and stuff like that. He doesn't weigh his beans or the water.
I also pre-wet my filter. I did that without knowing if other people did because it made sense to me then, that you're washing away some residue from the filter making process and not have it end up in your coffee. Also, less of your coffee is going to soak the filter; more coffee flavor will end up in your cup.
Same. Coffee every morning, no exceptions. Usually Gevalia medium roast. Two cups at home, and I take one to work. Half and half, no sweetener. I could upgrade the cheap drip coffee maker that my wife bought after our better one died, but I probably won't.
Buying coffee makers, our last one recently quit because the on-off switch failed. The Mrs. couldn't wait 1 day for Amazon to bring the replacement part, and rushed out and bought a new one. The switch came the next day, so now we have a backup.
I grind whole beans every morning and use a pour over setup. Like HSB, my kettle is a gooseneck kettle, though my pour over is a Bodum carafe, not a Chemex.
My preferred coffee is Peet's Major D's (dark roast). When I make my coffee at home, I take it black. When I buy a pound at Peet's and get a complimentary cup of coffee, I typically add sugar and half-and-half. I like to have that change of pace once every two weeks or so.
You can order Peet's coffees online. I have a standing monthly order in the Peet's Small Lots series that is delivered to my sister and BIL in NJ. In fact, I got an email from Peet's just yesterday that this month's order has shipped.
The single most important office supply I have in my office at work is my Keurig. 2 cups in the morning, 1 cream, 2 sugars. I have my reservoir routine set so that I never have to refill with water before I make my first cup. Used to drink Peet's Major D, but was recently turned on to the Kirkland Pacific Bold and it's very good. On weekends, I use the Kirkland Columbian to make 2 cups in my French press.

There's a palpable ambition in the air this year at the Golden Bear Rec Center, a resolve that's being polished day-by-day.
As the building's soaring north-facing windows make silhouettes of the high bar specialists and sunbeams illuminate the ever-present wafts of chalk floating through the air, that drive can be seen in each gymnast that speeds down the vault runway, the focus apparent in the face of each young man that grasps the parallel bars as he slowly rotates his legs into a controlled L-sit.
Saturday's MBB game will have a good crowd because it's Furd, but the team will REALLY need the support the following Wednesday vs. SMU. It's a gigantic game. Everyone in the Bay, please go.
Steph still out with runners knee. But Porzingas might play today. Stupid that it's a Prime game though. Jaylen Brown back home. I wonder if he stopped by and visited the team.
i was not a super early adopter because i didnt have a *.edu account when i started. my sister-in-law was in college though, and gave me an invite when they opened it up to non-edu accounts.
i used to be on it a lot and post regularly. i stopped posting on FB and Insta a few years ago. i still scroll down a little to keep up w/ friends. generally others are posting less too so it less compelling.
i am finding more joy in smaller online forums like WFC, slack groups, etc. where you are not just announcing a thing into the void.
I created one because the parents on No 3's travel ball team were on it. Added a few people from HS. After we moved, I used it to keep up with what friends back in Lousiville were up to. But I stopped checking probably around 2020. After getting the Miata, I did join a few Miata groups so I only go to FB when I get a notification of new posts from those groups.
I originally joined because nieces and nephews were regulars and it was a way to keep up with what they were doing. They’ve mostly outgrown it so now I just use it to post occasional pictures of what’s going on with me in DC related events.
I hadn't joined the Faceypages by the time it sorta jumped the shark, and it's much too late now. So this will be a thing that came and went without me. I have no regrets about that.

Kaiser didn't retrofit the old hospital building for seismic reasons as you suppose. It was simply easier and cheaper to build a new building. The old hospital building was demolished after they had built the replacement building on the other side of MacArthur, though the address is formally on Broadway (3600 Broadway).
The new building supplanted what used to be a shopping center that was known as M/B Center. It is quite visible from BART at the MacArthur station and on the tracks as you travel to downtown Oakland.

in the ideal world i would not look at my phone or electronic devices until i made coffee (and a pastry) and read for about 20-30 min.
to be honest - i am not great about this .. only 25% of the time

The crossword on my ipad gets a pass.

today seemed "easy" for a Thu. or i am getting smarter (unlikely)
Yeah, sometimes on a Thursday, once you crack the code it all falls into place. Today was one of those Thursdays.
For a non-coffee person, how is a Chemex better than just getting one of those drip things with a regular filter over a cup? Is it just capacity?

My kids weigh their beans and water, but they're influenced by their old man.

yup. some prety serious stereo equipment
i was born in Oakland. Samuel Merritt Hospital
if people ask me "where are you from?" ... i usually say Oakland!
I was born in Providence hospital in Oakland. I assume by now it's been absorbed by another hospital.
When I tell people out here that I'm from Oakland, they sorta back up a step and say "wow" and then say something that exposes their ignorance. Happens almost every time.
Throw up a West-side!
Have they even heard of Oakland in upstate NY?
I think everybody here has heard of Oakland. The A's and Raiders helped with that, but Oakland has always had an outsized influence in culture.
But in my experience, only the well traveled know where it is, exactly. And very few people have an understanding of The Town that even remotely resembles reality.
the geography is what throws most people. some people dont even realize SF and LA are 400 miles apart.
they also think it is always sunny and nice in SF, until they show up and need to buy a hoodie.
The distance from SF to LA is about the same as from NYC to the Virginia/North Carolina border. People definitely don't get that here.
I bet most people think Oakland is a bunch of gang members and killings.
arent they?
I sometimes let people believe that so that they think I'm straight gangster and tough as hell.
Black Panther had significant scenes in Oakland.
To add to the list hospitals people were born in, I’ll throw in Kaiser at MacArthur and Broadway.
No 1 and 2 were born in Kaiser WC. No 3 was Alta Bates because we weren't sure we could make WC.
I was also born at that same hospital. As were my sisters. Our mother liked to say that all three of us were born on the same table.
Kaiser represent! Me too. I think it was condemned for seismic concerns or something, no? Or maybe because they knew they couldn't ever produce anything as awesome as us again.
for a long time i thought i was born at Childrens Hospital (now part of UCSF). i think it is because that is where my pediatrician was.

I love Oakland so much. It's home, even though I've been in Upstate NY for a long time.
I miss living there. We were down in 16th ave near E 19th st. Used to have an apt up near the Rose Garden. That was a great place as well.
