Fenton's also reminds me that ice cream parlors used to be a thing. There was, at one time, two ice cream parlors within a few hundred feet of each other on Solano Ave in Berkeley.
Ortman's Ice Cream was on Solano at Colusa. That location became a Starbuck's.
MacCallum's Ice Cream was on Solano above Colusa in the spot now occupied by Peet's.
I remember going to MacCallum's as a youngster. It was a treat to get a sundae there.
Fenton's became the place to go to by default after Ortman's and MacCallum's closed because there literally no one closer. There was a Baskin Robbins 31 flavors on Shattuck Ave. between Vine and Rose (closer to Vine); near where Saul's Deli is now. But it was not as good as MacCallum's or Ortman's.
I think I remember MacCallum's. We used to go to church around the corner and when I was maybe 6 we used to go to an ice cream place up from Colusa. Was MacCallum's there in the mid 70s?
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. women's hockey gold medal-winning team has politely declined an invitation from President Donald Trump to attend his State of the Union address Tuesday.
The article claims it is due to "timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate. They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment."
The mens team was also invited.
"Scheduling will be a challenge as the NHL season resumes with five games Wednesday. The PWHL returns Thursday."
If they really wanted to they probably could since they got back to the US on Monday.
we ended up getting a very respectable 18+ inches of snow in our NYC suburbs just north of NYC.
i enjoyed spending a few hours outside w/ the snow blower and the shovel. tried to help the neighbors who didnt have one.
i like to shovel the driveway and the paths. however for carving yourself an on-street parking spot in front of the house, the snow blower is appreciated.
Was supposed to fly BDL - ORD - SFO yesterday (Feb 23) after spending last week in western Massachusetts with family, their winter break aka “ski week”. Saturday afternoon began the flight cancellation, rebooking, cancellation, rebooking circus. Sunday night I looked at Flight Aware for BDL scheduled departures on Monday. There were only four and one of them was FedEx. Monday the schools were closed - snow day. Drove Mass Pike to BDL this afternoon, MA takes good care of their roads. Now in the air heading for SFO. It’s pretty bumpy!

BERKELEY - The California lacrosse team (3-2) led by a pair of goals in the fourth period but could not hold on to its lead in a 13-12 loss to UC Davis (2-3) on Monday evening at California Memorial Stadium. The Aggies scored the final three goals of the nonconference between former Pac-12 rivals capped by Lauren Picardi's unassisted game-winner with 1:22 remaining. UC Davis won the draw control following Picardi's game-winner and was able to run out the clock without the Bears getting another possession.
The California men's soccer program will play a slate of eight games during the spring offseason – including three home matches and a battle with Stanford on Treasure Island – head coach Leonard Griffin announced Monday.
After a successful first road series last weekend at UC Irvine, the California baseball team is back in Northern California for a five-game week that features three games at Stu Gordon Stadium. The Golden Bears (4-3) will play a two-game home-and-home series with UC Davis (3-4) on Tuesday and Wednesday, before playing a three-game split weekend series with Sacramento State (3-4).
The most important game tonight is that we're rooting big time for UC Los Angeles to beat U$C in Pauley. UCLA is presumed to be in the tournament, and we beat them on a neutral court, while Lunardi inexplicably has USC a couple spots above Cal right now. This game could put some polish on our UCLA win while hanging a 10th conference loss on the Trojans.
It'd also be nice if tournament lock Tennessee can go to Mizzou and win tonight (sorry, Dennis Gates!).
The demise of the WaPo sports section is complete. They reluctantly sent reporters to cover the Olympics. But today’s section consists of four AP feature type stories spread over three pages and one page of digests of yesterday’s news and scores from various sources. Not one mention of any of the local pro or college teams.
We DBD shamed him into going to the game tomorrow. He'll try to tell you that it wasn't us, it's because he got a dog sitter or something, but we know that it was us.
So, if Cal wins tomorrow, it's because we got him to go. If Cal loses, it's his fault for not getting it done.
That would be pretty cool. How many of the venues from 80 are still standing? I bet most of them since they're probably the US Team training sites for many of the events.
All of them are still standing, and they've all been recently refreshed and improved.
They totally modernized the Herb Brooks Arena and added a attached new convention center in the middle of downtown Lake Placid.
They built a nice new building at the bottom of the ski jumping complex, and an even bigger new building with fancy new training facilities at Mt Van Hoevenberg, where the sliding track and XC skiing/biathlon are.
Whiteface Mountain got a bunch of upgrades, too, as did Gore Mountain which wasn't used in 1980 but could be used for events in 2042. Even the Olympic Speedskating Oval, which wouldn't be used for a modern games got a nice new warming facility.
These facilities are all operated by a Olympic Regional Development Authority, controlled by the State of NY. I'd think this unified control would be attractive to the IOC.
There's a push underway for NYC-Lake Placid to do a joint bid for the 2042 winter games. So the hockey, skating, curling, etc. would be in NYC, and the skiing, sliding, and snowboarding would be in Lake Placid. Given that Milan and Cortina opened the door for two sites co-hosting, and the fact that the NYC area has FOUR arenas and Lake Placid just refreshed its facilities for last year's World University Games, this feels like it could have legs.
Fenton's Creamery is the only correct answer.
Come at me, bro!
I saw a news story that they offered Alysa Liu ice cream for life. They have to create a sundae that mirrors her hair.
Chocolate and caramel ice creams in a sundae with whipped cream and a cherry on top.
add some gold sparkles!

6 for me, but I had to start with yesterday's word per the rules of my monthly competition, which ended up being a handicap.

I have a nephew living near L.A. so may actually think about going. Wouldn’t mind seeing some track and field, or athletics as they call it.

2042 Winter Olympics NYC-Lake Placid?
I went to 1980 Lake Placid. They had a lot of well-publicized problems, but I had a great time. Super exciting!
That would be pretty cool. How many of the venues from 80 are still standing? I bet most of them since they're probably the US Team training sites for many of the events.
All of them are still standing, and they've all been recently refreshed and improved.

Then let's get the Winter Olympics!!
You'd have the opening ceremonies be a parade down Broadway's Canyon of Heroes, ending in Times Square, sort of like Paris did on the river.
You could do Big Air in Yankee Stadium or Citi Field - they've already done Big Air exhibitions in Fenway.
Have the medal ceremonies by the statue of Atlas at Rockefeller Plaza, where there's already an ice rink (NBC would love this).
You could have selected hockey games in the Herb Brooks Arena where the miracle on ice took place.
No shortage of hotels, etc. in the City. And Lake Placid and the surrounding towns could totally host half of the modern Olympic footprint.
Any reason why I can't vote in the poll? I see only 2 votes cast.
