_ American Hero

this was such a goofy show. hard to believe we actually liked it

heyalumnigo's avatar

I remember this show. With a good theme song as well.

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

it could be that the good theme song did more for the show's popularity than average.

Macarolina's avatar

I loved belting out that song back in the elementary school days.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

what magazines subs do you have?

(or any print sub)

space_lab's avatar

NYT, New York Mag, the New Yorker

(We have never lived in New York)

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i still subscribe to NYT print on weekends. however once when i tried to cancel the customer service person told me that i could put it on vacation hold, not get charged, and get digital access for free. so that's what it do.

every 6-12 months or so i forget to extend the vacation hold and we get a Sun NYT delivered to the house. sadly the print Sundays Times is 99% ads. the weekdays are better.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i like the New Yorker a lot. i never have enough time to read when it comes weekly though

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Scientific American

i used to have a print sub for a long time, HS thru early working years in NYC. at some point w/ the internet i gave up on it.

last night's Cal lecture event in NYC was sponsored by them, and so it reminded me how much i used to enjoy it, so i resubscribed.

looking forward to a hard print copy that comes in the mail.

heyalumnigo's avatar

None. The last one I subscribed to was the Air and Space Magazine.

FiatSlug's avatar

Smithsonian

Consumer Reports

I don't count the subs I have from commercial organization memberships or affinity groups.

We used to have Sunset, which was a monthly thing tuned towards food, gardening, and architecture. Somewhere in the 2010s, Sunset was sold to a private equity firm who promptly gutted it. We didn't renew our subscription.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I remember Sunset. My parents used to sub. I think also New Yorker and Time/Newsweek.

Newellbany's avatar

"A Magazine Called Sunset" is a great Wilco song.

https://youtu.be/ydn5sfwEsNQ

FiatSlug's avatar

My parents also used to subscribe. This is how I knew about Sunset and why I had a subscription: I had years of reading Sunset before I had my own subscription.

CalGal2004's avatar

Loved Sunset, “the magazine for Western living”. Mom subscribed and had all the cookbooks. We subscribed but dropped it after the Lane family sold it. Still have the Western Garden Book.

FiatSlug's avatar

I don't know that my Mom had quite as many of the Sunset cookbooks, but I know she had a few. And Sunset cookbooks were a contributing factor to my mom's enduring interest in culinary arts, which was wide-ranging and became professional.

I had a greater interest in architectural articles. Also, as it so happens, I also have relatives and friends that have had something featured in Sunset articles (gardening and architecture). Strictly coincidental, but interesting, nonetheless.

Newellbany's avatar

All my subscriptions are digital now. I read the printed SF Chronicle when I visit my dad and it's about the size of a pamphlet now. Such a shame.

And I don't understand how they were able to print the last night's scores in the paper every day in the 1980s, but they can't figure out how to do it in 2026.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I didn't like that they removed the green from the Sporting Green.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

that was the best part. i like old fashioned things like that

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 1 used to wake up early and grab the sports section and read all the stats when he was maybe 6.

dcblue's avatar

Still get WaPo in print but that will stop in a couple months when my current subscription expires. I’ll switch to digital at that time. It looks like the sports section will now be all AP articles and no local beat reporters. The style and metro sections had already been reduced to three pages each.

Tangtpt's avatar

California Magazine

Used to have a SI subscription for a long time, but that was a long time ago.

CalGal2004's avatar

The Economist. Mr. CG prefers analog over digital, but he’s got a huge library of audible books.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i like the Economist too. i wish i read it more regularly. i did once upon a time when i had a finance job and it mattered more to work

Newellbany's avatar

There was a time when I thought about a career in the foreign service, and everyone said a subscription to The Economist was the best way to study for the foreign service exam.

Boxer engine - Porsches and Subarus

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

right. we have 2 of those. HAG is babysitting one of them.

speaking of which, how is the WRX?

heyalumnigo's avatar

It's good. I drive it a couple of times a week. Mostly 30-40 miles round trip. still 1000 miles before I'll do an oil change. I'll do it before Traitor daughter comes to pick it up or it gets shipped.

We did take No 1's STi up to Tahoe and put on his snow tires. Didn't really need them by the time we got up last weekend. Your WRX has good high performance all seasons so it would've been enough for the few roads that were still slushy. On Monday I put the summers back on No 1's since we probably won't go back up to Tahoe and ski this year.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

it is looking more and more like Traitor daughter will be on east coast for grad school. USCB is the only school they are seriously considering out there. no word from Cal or Stanford yet (i think).

there are 3-4 visits coming up and lots of flying around in a short amount of time.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

The Boxer by S&G - one of my favorite songs

FiatSlug's avatar

I also love The Boxer. That whole album (Bridge Over Trouble Water) is great. It's easily the best album of the S&G collected works. The title track is just amazing. Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, and Sounds of Silence are probably S&G's top three tunes, in no particular order.

heyalumnigo's avatar

My sister used to amateur box a little in NYC back in her 20s.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

my sister-in-law once got a good photo w/ Ali in the Louisville airport. looks like she was about 4 or 5

https://photos.app.goo.gl/vzdvGk82A3EEZRq89

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 1 had a field trip to the Ali museum and he happened to be there and shook hands with all the kids.

Tangtpt's avatar

I remember seeing Sugar Ray Leonard v. Roberto Duran ("No Mas") fight on TV. Amazing sports moment!

Macarolina's avatar

Back in our days with Braves' season share tix during the '10s, many times we sat several rows back from Evander Holyfield's regular seat (don't know if it was his or a friend's). BIG dude! He was friendly to folks who said hello, and would acknowledge "Champ!" with a smile.

Wiata78's avatar

Friday night Fights, sponsored by Gillette

Newellbany's avatar

Our grandfathers would never believe that their grandkids probably can't name the heavyweight champion of the world, but that's how far the sport has fallen.

I have fond memories of watching Tyson fights back in the day, but it's been a long time since then. I might be nostalgic about boxing, but I suppose I don't really miss it.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i could not name any current boxer. maybe if you threw out a few names i would be able to identify them as boxers or not.

dcblue's avatar

Isn’t Mayweather coming out of retirement?

Newellbany's avatar

In related news, Floyd Mayweather reportedly had $50 million in gambling losses over the past 10 years.

space_lab's avatar

Jake Paul, lol

Newellbany's avatar

Cal's MBB game at Haas tonight is the biggest game for the program in 9 years.

Newellbany's avatar

Even JimmyChitwood is going!

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm going with JC and his friend. I reached out to my friend's dad to see if his friend's tickets are available. He said that his friend was going but my friend wasn't so they needed a ride (his dad and dad's friend don't drive at night anymore) and would give us the 2 extra tickets. When my friend can't go they reach out to me to ask me to drive them for a ticket.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

according to ESPN Analytics we only have a 39% chance of winning.

Newellbany's avatar

I'd love to track their predictions on the back end to see how they do. My guess is that vegas is a lot more accurate.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

it would be interesting.

verifying the accuracy of a "pct chance of winning" if different than picking winners and losers and evaluating a binary prediction.

sort of like verifying the accuracy of "40% chance of rain".

Newellbany's avatar

Right, so I'd like to see all the times they said a team had a 40% chance and whether that team won more or less than 40% of the time.

Compared to Vegas, I have come to suspect that ESPN's algorithm overly includes prior year data and excludes player availability.

Newellbany's avatar

You're lucky - I have to wait until ten o-clock at night!

heyalumnigo's avatar

I assume Dort is still out so that's going to be a BIG challenge.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Dort is due back tonight after going 100% this week in practice.

Newellbany's avatar

If we can get 15 good productive minutes from Dort tonight, I'll be thrilled.

Newellbany's avatar

If you're looking for reasons for optimism, most of SMU's scoring comes from the guard position. I feel like it's the teams with athletic bigs that we struggle the most with, especially without Dort as a rim protector.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Hopefully W4C gets an SMU thread going…the number of fans who consistently post during live MBB chats is indicative of the damage that the incompetent Mike Williams and Jim Knowlton did to the program. Knowlton should be indicted.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The most striking year-over-year change in the fiscal report was Cal saying intercollegiate sports collectively generated $28.1 million in “other operating revenue,” a huge increase from $2.4 million one year earlier. The men’s basketball program generated $5 million of this revenue, a year after posting only $1,100.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

seems like accounting tricks

Macarolina's avatar

Does this account for growing donations?

heyalumnigo's avatar

I assume donations go into revenue. They do highlight donations going up. Can't remember if they cite exact numbers.

California women's water polo freshman Despoina Drakotou has now won more weekly MPSF awards than any other Golden Bear, having picked up her fourth MPSF Newcomer of the Week honor this week.

Drakotou had a hat trick on 3-of-4 shooting with two drawn exclusions, an assist and a steal in Cal's 19-18 overtime loss to No. 2 UCLA in MPSF competition last weekend in Berkeley. She leads the Bears in scoring with 29 goals so far this season, tallying multiple goals in a team-best nine game for 8-3 Cal.

yesterday's NYC event was pretty fantastic.

Breakthroughs to the Future: The Science Re-Shaping Our World, co-hosted by UC Berkeley and Scientific American Custom Media, and featuring UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons, Nobel Laureates Jennifer Doudna and Omar Yaghi, and Professor Ken Goldberg.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

aside from hearing about Nobel prize winning stuff, the lasting impression from all 3 faculty is how they really enjoy the research process and interacting with and mentoring undergrads and grad students.

also, Rich Lyons is great. just the kind of person we need in the moment to make Cal and Cal Football GREAT AGAIN

MBB Bubble Watch:

The good: UCLA throttled USC in the most important game for us. Auburn lost to OU, dropping their SEC record to 6-9. Will the committee be like the CFB Playoff committee and say that SEC losses don't count against you?

The bad: We could have used Missouri and TCU losses, but didn't get them.

Tonight, we're rooting for:

Georgia to lose at Vandy

TAMU to lose at Arkansas

Texas to lose vs. Florida

tOSU to lose at Iowa

Santa Clara to lose to St. Mary's

Pelicans knock off Warriors as GSW'S Two-Timelines era gets picked apart

https://dubnationhq.com/p/pelicans-knock-off-warriors-as-gsws

Tuesday night wasn’t just a 113–109 loss in New Orleans. It was one of those NBA evenings where the game itself almost feels secondary, like the real action is happening in the subtext. The Warriors walked off the floor with another mark in the loss column, sure. But what lingered was something heavier: the sense that the past, present, and alternate futures of this franchise were all playing out at once.
