Top Gun. Though I will have to say not all the way through. Either it's on when I flip to it, or the flying scenes. And most of the watches were probably between teenage me and 23?

i watched many of the those times w/ HAG. so this would be my top movie as well.

the others in the running are (since i had them on the same long play 6 hr VHS tape)

- Monty Python and the Holy Grail

- Roxanne (the one w/ Steve Martin)

Theater and catching it on TV: prob Star Wars

But have prob seen Repo Man more than that. Friend in HS/Jr College had it on VHS and watching it was the Fri or Sat "after doing whatever" thing to do. Haven't seen it in at least 15 years, but can prob still quote 90% of it.

Not quite summer, but Spring? We are brining the baby up to the bay area for the first time next weekend. Staying in San Jose. Tips for flying with a 10 month old?

Expand full comment

None aside from "pack your patience." The first flight with our older daughter she was 9 months old and was just angelic, left the plane with lipstick marks from where the flight attendants had kissed her goodbye. The flight home, on the other hand, well she had started teething mid trip and spent the entire flight standing on my lap with her face 4" from mine going "owowowowowowowoow" the whole time. Total crapshoot is what I'm saying.

Expand full comment

as for flying 10 month old .. it will of course be a hassle and the baby will cry and people will look at you.

the key is not to care, you and your baby paid and deserve to be there as much as the next person and you dont have to apologize for it.

As for summer, maybe Vegas.

None, currently. My brother and I were unsuccessful in the lottery for tickets to any of Scotland's group matches in Euro 2024, and I am not prepared to spend between $400 and $1200 for a ticket on the secondary market. I suspect that the womenfolk will be in Vermont for the summer per usual, so "enjoying the peace and quiet" is the likely plan. Since it's before Memorial Day, I don't think that attending my older daughter's college graduation really counts as a summer plan.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (Netflix, 18/19 WB).

Wes Anderson's take on a Roald Dahl short story is like nothing I've ever seen. It unfolds like a child reading the book - an impeccable cast delivering their lines fast and in run-on sentences, like a smart fifth grader trying to demonstrate how smart they are. But it's Wes Anderson - of course it's going to be quirky. The run-on-sentences forces you to focus on the story.

But the magic of the story is the scenery, which is like a picture book come alive on a stage - with backgrounds that descend from the rafters, fly apart, and emerge from the wings. It's all done in under 40 minutes and it is... magical.
