GOTTA GET DOWN ON FRIDAY

Expand full comment

Finished packing and doing lots of "house prep" so my wife can have an easier week while I'm away. Constantly refreshing wind forecasts and going over potential places to drop the hook to stay out of the wind in La Paz.

Expand full comment

i am going to try to work out today as my "one useful thing i do today"

aside from that work is mostly just interviewing people for a bunch of open roles.

Expand full comment

three hours of sleep last night, give or take, about the only thing I'm down for at the moment is a plan for an afternoon nap.

Expand full comment

I may take one as well. Have a cold (fingers crossed. two negative tests so far about 36 hours apart) that is kind of kicking my ass. Chest and head with not a lot of coughing, but when I do my midsection hurts.

Expand full comment

I hope it's just a cold!

Expand full comment

Probably me too. Got up early to get in a run before the expected rain. Rain still hasn't arrived so I didn't really need the early start. But I am feeling the lack of that last hour of sleep, which is usually my best.

Expand full comment

Same. Nothing is getting done today.

Startup exits ...

Mar 3, 2023·edited Mar 3, 2023

the place i worked from 2014-17 had a buyout announced yesterday. nothing to get rich over, but still a nice chuck-of-change.

when i started working there, they were hoping for a $1B exit in 5-ish years, but that clearly did not happen. i guess these investments of time, effort, career in a startup are no different than any other investment.

that being said, it was a fantastic group of people, i was the 30th employee, my first time managing a team, and i still have a really good core group of 50+ friends that are all still mostly in touch in a Slack org.

HAVE YOU, IN FACT, STILL GOT IT

Expand full comment

I used to have it! Then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't "it," and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you!

Erroneous assumption is you ever had it.

Oh Yeah...

That depends. What is "it"?

I have so much of it I occasionally give some away.

Nope.

Really beginning to wonder if I ever even had it.

I absolutely do not still got it

Warriors didn't look too good in the 1st half. Built a huge brick house. But they had one of their patented huge 3rd Q, helped by the Clippers building their own brick house to rival the Warrors'. EJ said that it was the first time in the shot clock era that a team that was down 10 at half, won by at least 10 in two straight games. Which doesn't seem right. At first I thought he said win by at least 20 but the Warriors only beat the blazers by 18.

Expand full comment

i watched the 3rd Q this morning to catch up. pretty impressive, but the problem this season is that it only happens at home games.

Expand full comment

They are a weird team.

Expand full comment

I'm about where I was at this time last year. They have an outside shot at the WCF, but that's probably the ceiling with this team, especially considering the new talent in the West and the seemingly unstoppable Nuggets

Expand full comment

I think the Nuggets come out of the West. Warriors, depending on matchup, might make the WCF.

Although I'd gladly be proven wrong.

My first ball boy season

Oh man, remember when Cal used to be good at basketball?

Expand full comment

i didnt go to the game (in Chicago?) vs Duke even though i was physically very close in Bloomington IN. i did go to the next game in STL where lost to KU in the Sweet 16.

in the end, i sold my Elite 8 tix for more than i paid for my entire weekend including hotel and rental car and sadly drove back to Bloomington a day or two early.

but it was still a great trip and nice to remember a time when basketball team was still good.

I went to two different first round losses - both in Dallas. One we couldn't leave early because we bought the cheapest air tickets possible.

Newellbany and I attended the NC State loss in Dallas in March ‘06. That one was tough…out of nowhere, Midge didn’t start because of a back injury, and he and Ubaka were awful. Could not hit anything. Beginning of the end for Braun.

I had driven up from Houston and met up with my high school friend (who also went to Cal - but we barely hung out at Cal for some reason) and we watched the game - he lived in Dallas.

I woke up at about 430 (after only about 3 hours of sleep) to drive from Portland to Spokane in 2016. Then spent a couple of hours after the game there and in Coeur d'Alene Idaho before driving another 2.5+ hours back towards Portland later that night. Was a long day for a horrible game.

[MBB] Bears Downed By Ducks In Eugene

https://calbears.com/news/2023/3/2/mens-basketball-bears-downed-by-ducks-in-eugene.aspx

EUGENE, Ore. – The California men's basketball team could not quell a hot-shooting night by Oregon and dropped an 84-51 road contest at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday night.

Oregon (17-13, 10-9 Pac-12) won its second straight game as five Ducks scored in double figures, including Jermaine Couisnard, who finished with a game-high 17 points. The Ducks shot 55% from the field and dominated the backboards with a 45-21 rebounding advantage. Cal (3-27, 2-17) was paced by 11 points from Sam Alajiki, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was 4 of 5 from the floor. Grant Newell added nine points while Joel Brown had seven points and three assists. Lars Thiemann returned to action after a one-game absence, scoring nine points in 23 minutes off the bench.

It looks like the basketball team will have less wins than the football team did. That would be embarrassing if football had a Rose Bowl season. In this case it's.....Sorry, haven't a word for it.

[WROW] 2023 Campaign Gets Underway Saturday

https://calbears.com/news/2023/3/2/womens-rowing-2023-campaign-gets-underway-saturday.aspx

The 2023 Cal women's rowing season gets underway this weekend at the California Challenge Cup in Newport Beach on Saturday. The event will feature crews from 10 universities throughout California which will race in a head-to-head format. As the rowing season doesn't feature any official preseason races, the California Challenge Cup will give ninth-year head coach Al Acosta a good gauge of where his team is at after completing a several-month long offseason training program.

"The California Cup is a series of four shorter races in one day," Acosta said. "In our sport, we train all year long and we might race eight times or so. So to be able to go down the racecourse four times in one day is a good opportunity for them to practice getting the boat up to speed, sustaining their speed and then trying to elevate the speed towards the end of the race."

The No. 3 California women's water polo team boasts its highest national ranking of the season heading into Saturday's MPSF opener against No. 9 Arizona State. The Golden Bears (12-3) host the Sun Devils (6-6) at noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex looking for their sixth win in seven tries. Cal begins conference play fresh off a 3-1 weekend and a big 9-7 win over then-No. 3 UCLA in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational third-place game. Junior Ruby Swadling scored a team-high three goals for the second time this season and senior Isabel Williams finished one save shy of a season-high with 14 to lead the Bears over the Bruins for the second straight time dating back to last season. It was also the Bears' first win over a top-three opponent in 2023. They are already 1-0 against the Sun Devils this year, having held them to a season-low for goals in a 15-3 win at last month's Stanford Invitational.

After a very strong start to the season, Cal has been ravaged by injuries to several of its top performers, who are gradually recovering and on track to return for this final month of the regular season. The Bears have not been without their successes, however; two gymnasts (senior Noah Sano and freshman Theodor Gadderud) have each received MPSF weekly awards this season, while three other Bears (junior Noah Newfeld, junior Aidan Li and freshman Khalen Curry) have set program top-three marks, including a school record on vault from Curry.
