Welcome to the DBD, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like how this picture has 12 black dots but your brain can only see one, two, or maybe three at a time.
The SF Giants and the LA Dodgers have the most expensive spring training tickets in Arizona ($48 and $52 respectively for lawn seats). The Angels are not expensive, so their games tend to be packed and kinda rowdy. The spring Giants fans and Phillies fans are exact opposite. Giants fans are casual fans who rock up for a casual day out in the sun to drink some beer on the lawn - like me. Phillies fans are really into the game. They are not there for a good time. They are there to watch baseball and ride-or-die with anything related to Philadelphia.
Freddie Freeman made his spring training debut, and more important than the result in a 2-0 Dodgers loss to the Rockies on Thursday at Salt River Fields.
Freeman, coming back from right ankle surgery in December, singled once in his three at-bats and hit the ball hard twice.
The A’s won their second matchup against the San Diego Padres this spring on Thursday afternoon, rallying late to beat the Friars 6-4 in front of the home crowd in Mesa.
Today marked the beginning of the Luis Severino era for the A’s as their big free agent expenditure made his team debut to start this contest. After inking the largest deal in franchise history expectations are high for Severino entering his first year with the team.
You never know who you’ll run into in the NBA. There’s an upset in the league almost every night, because (almost) every team and (almost) any player is capable of catching fire at any moment. And you just might run into them.
For the first half on Thursday, Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic were that team for the Golden State Warriors. The Magic are more talented than their mediocre record would suggest: they looked like one of the better teams in the league early in the year, before getting hit hard by injuries, which they’ve mostly recovered from. So the Warriors knew they could catch fire. But even the most optimistic Orlando fan had to be surprised by what transpired.

BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team went up by 14 points after the first quarter and didn't look back as it earned a wire-to-wire 79-65 victory against Georgia Tech at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night. Ioanna Krimili knocked down five 3-pointers and moved into 10th place on the NCAA's all-time career list passing Belmont's Darby Maggard. Michelle Onyiah was dominant in the paint, finishing just one point shy of her career high with 24 points (11-of-16) along with 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and fourth in the last seven contests.
BERKELEY – The California lacrosse team dug itself an early hole before storming back with a breathtaking turnaround, defeating Oregon 10-7 on Thursday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.
Cal handed Oregon its first defeat in five games. Granted, Oregon has played cupcakes. Cal appears to be a pretty average team, which isn't too shabby considering that it's been worse in the past.
The California women's tennis team returns to the Hellman Tennis Complex to host a nonconference match against 46th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
Hospitals don't want to give organ transplants to those who don't vaccinate due to their lower survival rates. House Republican representatives are now drafting up a bill to prevents such discrimination. I dunno. That sounds like Woke DEI bull to me.
Vatican says Pope put on a ventilator and says there's nothing to worry about and to not look at the cart and that everything is fine and he feels happy.
As if this were the biggest problem in the world right now, or even at home. At least *that* transition will take place without regards to a very public ego and it is likely to be peaceful. I only hope that this doesn't become a lingering exit much like that of Generalissimo Francisco Franco parodied by Chevy Chase on SNL. Or Josip Broz Tito.
There will be big consequences if a new Pope is from the very conservative side of the church- those consequences would be felt here in the US, especially for women, LGBTQ, other.
I get your point, but there are consequences for the church as well. Francis appointed cardinals who may more closely share his theological and worldviews.
More European countries and companies are gearing up to protect themselves against America's unpredictable and unpopular regime. Sorry, let's call it "pro-European", not anti-American.
If it wasn't already bad that half of the Federal government will be fired within two weeks, it now appears that the surviving half may shut down due to a lack of a budgetary solution
After calling Zelensky a dictator and then making it official speaking point for the US as the reason why they were siding with Russia and abandoning Ukraine, Trump gaslight the world by denying that he said it.
Oh. My. Fucking. God. Ukraine/US relations collapse.
Trump and Vance humiliated themselves in a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Zelensky in a meeting that devolved into a shouting match. Yesterday, GOP leadership seemed to be backpedaling from being pro-Russian stance, including GOP Senators meeting w/ Zelensky ahead of today's meeting. This also included Trump backpedaling by denying that he called Zelensky a dictator. The meeting started cordial today and then went completely off the rails as Trump could not help himself - digging into Zelensky for not saying thank you to Trump and America enough. Trump went rapidly downhill from there as tempers flared and then Zelensky walked out, as he should. Trump is clearly bought and paid by the Russians. Well done, Agent Krasnov.
Update: CNN reports that Trump ordered the Ukranian delegation to leave, which closes the door. America turns her back on one of her allies AGAIN, which will cost hundreds of thousands of lives.
That's the cherry on top of the shit sundae that is the degradation of America's role as leader of the free world.
This degradation is tantamount to treason. What I know won't happen and what I know should happen is that Trump should be removed from office by whatever peaceful means are available, and there are at least two - invocation of Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, and impeachment.
There should be plenty of evidence for either action under the Constitution. What will it take to turn the tide against this sick, sick man?
ADDENDUM to say only that Vice-President JD Vance, for the brief time that he spoke, was also an embarrassment.
The more I think about it, the more I believe that the opposition (which should include as many public figures opposed to Trump from as many different backgrounds and political philosophies) should create and operate a shadow Cabinet.
A shadow cabinet should serve the nation as a philosophical and policy counterweight to the Trump Administration. Doing nothing is political malpractice at the least, and borders on insanity.
Trump brags that he's going to release the Epstein files. The FBI does and it doesn't really reveal anything apart from confirming that Trump was with Epstein. Then AG Pam Bondi gets publicly mad because it isn't more damaging to Democrats and demands that more information get released.
White House wrestles control of who gets to ask questions at White House briefings away from the DC Correspondents. Only friendly organizations get to ask questions and Associated Press is still banned. The Ministry of Propoganda is strong and you will not question them.
Apropos: Trump caught on hot mike telling Fox News that they need to cover the first Cabinet meeting and describe it as "unbelievable". The Ministry of Propoganda is strong and you will still not question them.
I am trying to also add on other small acts that collectively make a difference. For instance, I will not drive my car today. I often choose to drive into work on Fridays, but for today's commute to and from work, I walked and used public transit.
If I do choose to buy something, it will be from a local merchant and not a chain store and I will pay cash. Paying cash means the merchant will not be charged a fee for processing a debit or credit card. When I get a haircut, I pay both the cost of the cut and the tip in cash.
In anticipation of this day, Mrs. Slug did her shopping yesterday.
In "Live and Let Die" - stuntman Ross Kananga did actually run across the backs of three alligators on five different takes. You can see on one of the takes that he gets bitten, requiring 193 stitches. He was paid $60k back in 1973.

A little update on our ski trip to Chamonix last week.
It was sunny and warm all week and we had a great time overall. We skied 3 days at the various resort near the village. The best thing we did was a full day excursion with a guide skiing the Vallee Blanche, which is one long 20 km backcountry ski run that takes all day.
We took a 2-part gondola up to the top of Aiguille du Midi which is a station at 3800m elevation (12600 ft) that has stunning views of Mont Blanc. From there we had to put on crampons on our ski boots and hike down about 200m to place where it was safe to start skiing.
After that we had wide open skiing and incredible mountain views in all directions. It was perfectly normal skiing on a glacier with a very generous snowpack, some moguls, nothing dangerous or hard for the next 4 hours.
Thanks for sharing your photos. My ski group was in Chamomix in Jan 2022. Unfortunately those of us hoping to do the Vallee Blanche got fogged out, excursion cancelled. 😞 Glad you had bluebird skies and conditions. ⛷️

Been all over England and Wales but never to Scotland. Excited to spend time there. While in London going to a Premier League as is my custom.
Scotland is great. I haven't been since Brexit, but my wife went recently said that upcountry Scotland has a labor crisis because they relied upon eastern European kids to work at restaurants. She was there for a week upcountry and complained that if the town was small, people would line up for an hour or two before a restaurant was open otherwise they wouldn't eat. And if you got in, it was a very very long time to get your food - but you were happy to eat at all.

That comment would require that they know two things (1) the year of your birth and (2) if the year of your birth was, in fact, a Leap Year.

I posit that Jimmy Butler joining the Warriors has helped Steph's offensive game.
Nothing specific, just a general feeling. Synergy, or a result greater than the sum of its parts, as it were.
Harder for teams to double Steph because Butler can create or facilitate.
