5. not sure why it says "magnificent"

i did the thing where i started w/ yesterday's word. in some ways it was a curse to get 3 out of 5 in the first try because it makes it hard to explore the remaining options in hard mode.

i dont mind if i get one or none in the first round or two. the info you get from the "not used letters" is the most important thing to me.

A rather annoying word.

It's not an intentional brag, but squarely in the category of "proud parents". My daughter got a job offer to be a paralegal at arguably the world's #1 law firm, located in Manhattan. It's the interim job before applying to law school. I am so pleased and proud, not for anything that I have done - but for all the hard work, the thoughtful planning, and the born-with-it-smarts that she has. She graduates in seven weeks, is taking an online paralegal certification degree before flying off to backpack around Vietnam before starting in August. In fact, I dropped her off at the airport yesterday after she spent her last school holiday at home knowing full well that she is on the cusp of being a fully fledged adult that I've put into the world, albeit into the hungry maw of Manhattan professional life. That being said, I will probably have to subsidize her until she gets out of law school. Being poor in NYC is not easy.

nice, congrats to them.

i feel the same about "pleased and proud, not for anything that I have done - but for all the hard work,..."

it is great to see them dive into the hard world with enthusiasm.

older one (aka traitor daughter) is presenting at her first serious conference. going to grad school in physics phd program next year. location TBD.

Investigating the twist-angle dependence of Bernal bilayer-trilayer graphene

most of these words mean little to me. people are generally studying graphene as an example of a 2d material - only a few atomic layers thick - and exploring interesting properties.

Wiata78's avatar

Very impressive stuff. I don’t know the physics community much, but this looks like a relatively huge meeting.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

sadly the session ran more than an hour late and so she was presenting to just people in her lab around 730p at night

Too bad, but on to bigger and better things!

None. I switched to my phone as my primary time keeping device. Even then, not allowed to have a phone in a commercial kitchen. And I can't wear anything on my arms or hands in the kitchen. I don't even wear a wedding ring anymore, even though local sanitation laws allow me to wear it because it's one more thing to get unsanitary and/or hurt me.

i have a Garmin smart watch (fenix 6). it is not "on all the time" and i only wear it when being active for tracking workout stats. even tracks ski runs at the major resorts.

it does have a few bonus features which have come in handy.

- topo maps and US trail system. once i got lost in the snow and it helped me get back to the AT.

- incident detection which notices sudden accelerations (or decelerations) and tracks you and sends your bro-in-law a text when you crash your bike and end up in the ER.

When I ran races I religiously tracked workouts and kept a running diary. Since I quit racing I don’t keep track. Recently one of my brothers asked if I wore a smartwatch when I ran. Then he, correctly, said that maybe I didn’t want to know how fast/slow I am these days.

Wiata78's avatar

When I do intervals these days, my fast is slower than my slow used to be. Don’t need a watch to figure that out. That’s life! As they say, it beats the alternative.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

my power output has gone down considerably since i dont ride and train outdoors anymore. it is much less motivating and fun to ride a stationary bike.

still, trying to keep at it a few times a week.

I used to have a few Swatches (one at a time) and I really liked them. The first was just the clear see through one. Then I was gifted one of the chrono ones. And then later gifted one of the auto-winding ones. The ones i had were just the regular color ones, not one with weird designs or colors. Sometime in my late 20s I stopped wearing watches.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i mostly have Timex watches for analog time telling. they are cheap and classy enough.

FiatSlug's avatar

Currently, my everyday watch is a Casio digital watch. I also have a Citizen Eco-Drive analog watch that is very nice.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

once upon a time w/ a daily Wall St job i had a regular watch and a Friday watch. the Friday watch was a little more casual and went more w/ casual Friday attire.

these days everyday is like a casual Friday i am told.

all this to say, my co-worker liked the idea of the "Friday watch" and said that is the one thing he hoped i would leave to him in my will!

FiatSlug's avatar

I really should wear the Citizen Eco-Drive watch more often. Make it my "Friday watch", for example.

MIAMI -- When the most important baseball game in their country's history was over and World Baseball Classic gold medals dangled around their necks Tuesday night, the members of the Venezuelan national team took the stage in center field at LoanDepot Park and belted every word to "Gloria Al Bravo Pueblo."

dcblue's avatar

Am I a bad American since I was rooting for Venezuela?

FiatSlug's avatar

Echoing HSB (with emphasis): NO.

Wiata78's avatar

Seems like most of the stadium was rooting for Venezuela!

https://calbears.com/news/2026/3/17/womens-water-polo-cals-despoina-drakotou-earns-fifth-mpsf-newcomer-of-the-week-award.aspx

California women's water polo freshman Despoina Drakotou has added another award to her Cal-record MPSF Newcomer of the Week honor roll, picking up her fifth set of accolades from the conference this week.
