FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The California women's swimming & diving team got the 2025 NCAA Championships off to a rousing start Wednesday evening, breaking the school record in the 200-yard medley relay and placing fourth in a time of 1:33.54.
The Golden Bears' quartet of Isabelle Stadden (backstroke), Leah Polonsky (breaststroke), McKenna Stone (butterfly) and Mary-Ambre Moluh (freestyle) shattered the previous Cal benchmark of 1:33.85 set in 2018 by Kathleen Baker, Abbey Weitzeil, Noemie Thomas and Amy Bilquist.
Former California men's gymnastics head coach Barry Weiner has been named as one of six new inductees to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, as announced by USA Gymnastics on Wednesday. He is the third head coach in program history to receive this honor, following Hal Frey (ind. 1970) and Chuck Keeny (ind. 1975).
The California track & field team will hit the road this week to nearby Sacramento, bringing a full squad to Hornet Stadium to continue its outdoor season at the Hornet Invitational. The two-day meet will begin on Friday, with events starting at 10 a.m. PT both days.
The California lacrosse team continues its road trip with visits to No. 13 Duke and Winthrop this weekend.
Cal is coming off a stunning comeback victory over Marist University on Monday. Marist took an early lead, but the Bears went on a 6-0 run and went on to a 14-10 win over the Red Foxes.
The No. 9 California beach volleyball team (11-5) is set for another weekend of tough competitions as the Golden Bears head to Austin, Texas for the East vs West Invitational. Cal will face three teams it saw at last weekend's East Meets West Invitational in No. 12 LSU, No. 10 Texas, and No. 20 FIU and add a matchup with No. 18 Georgia State.
The California softball team (22-5, 5-1 ACC) will head to the East Coast for an eight-game road trip beginning Friday against conference opponent No. 23 Virginia (22-7, 4-2 ACC) on Friday.
The Golden Bears will begin the road trip with a three-game series against the Cavaliers, marking the first ACC road test and conference road series in program history.
I had the same thoughts about wanting him as our coach, and it was difficult for me not to think "dodged a bullet" once I saw this. Apparently the issues began only 6 months after he started on the job. Who knows if he would have had better relationships with Cal staffers if he were here, and who knows if he had similar issues at his prior gig, but given the apparent nature of the issues, I tend to think that this is a personality issue rather than a relationships issue.
My question is if he was like this at Sac State? I would think that something would have surfaced since this story broke on ESPN, or will show up in the next few days.
Maybe it didn't surface at Sac State because the culture at Sac State is different than at Stanf*rd or Cal. Even if that were true, it would be speculative to then describe what the Sac State culture is like or was like when Taylor was there.
It is illuminating, though, that Taylor is described as an "equal opportunity a__hole." (that's a quote from the sfchronicle.com article linked elsewhere in this thread). It is quite easy to imagine that this is how he operated also at Sac State and it was tolerated because winning is viewed as a salve. Taking one for the team, as it were.
It would not be the first case where the culture in the Bay Area, and as the sfchronicle would chronicle it, is decidedly different than lots of other places.
Wonder if folks who know him personally or played with him back in the day (some of whom frequent this board) are surprised by this. Not trying to call anyone out. Just curious if he’s always been an “equal opportunity a**hole” or did he evolve to survive in the environment that is college football. I think of people I know socially and professionally who are “good people” but sure as heck glad I don’t work with them.
Hard to tell what the whole story is with things like this, but Andrew Luck has his plate full dealing with getting Stanford football back on track in all aspects.
One of my all time favorite meals in Helsinki. The restaurant was a glass enclosed building in a park near downtown. Had a fish soup to start , reindeer steak for entree, and local berries with vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was a microbrewery so a couple beers to accompany. Thirty years ago and I still remember.
CPA filed our returns last week. I’m usually scrambling to meet his deadline to avoid an extension and extra fee. Now just gotta line up the payments. Really hate that property taxes are due in the same timeframe. 💸💸💸
I got my identity stolen last year and so I have to file with a PIN number now. I am still waiting for my return from last year and still need to file with California for last year. Everything got delayed and complicated with my identity being stolen.
Fortunately the feds didn’t issue my return from last tax season but the state did.
It's a major hassle, I know. About 38 years ago, Mrs. Slug had some rando "steal" her driver's license number when passing a bad check. I figure the rando simply picked a DL number at random; it's not hard to do. Just pick a letter and seven random digits.
Anyhow, DMV did kill her old DL number and issued a new DL number. That was easy compared to the horror stories I've heard since then about identity theft. It was only a DL number and not an SSN.
Fun fact - Hawaii DLs at one time used SSNs as identifiers. Another fun fact - the enabling legislation that created the Social Security Administration (SSA) forbade using SSNs for anything but identifying Social Security accounts within the SSA. Obviously, that law hasn't been observed by credit bureaus, lenders, and many, many other institutions and quasi-official entities.
Last summer, after yet another publicized data breach, we put freezes on our credit files at the Big Three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian). Doing so noticeably cut down on the solicitations we get in the mail.
My credit union used to use my SSN as my checking account number when I joined back in 97. Sometime early or mid 2000s they changed to a different number.
I did put a freeze on my credit but it caused an issue when I helped No 2 get an apt. He got a job but hadn't gotten a paycheck yet so he needed a co-signer for his apt. Not a big deal, until they tried to run my credit report.
Yup, I get it. As a co-signer, you have to go through the hassle of unfreezing your credit and then refreezing. Good thing it's now easy to do so, much easier than it was say, 10 to 12 years ago.
Yup. The problem I had was that I did it for 2 days, and they had issues. Then it was the weekend so I thought they'd do it on Mon. So I did unfreeze Mon, freeze Tues. Don't think they did it on Mon and contacted me on Wed that it was failing. So I kept it unfrozen until Sat 12 AM. They contacted me and said it still wasn't working that maybe it was on their end and they would try the next morning. Seemed to work then because No 2 got the lease approved.
Spam (scam?) calls from folks claiming to help people who missed filing in past years or have past due taxes. These calls don't show up in my log of Recents; they went straight to voicemail. I'm guessing these calls came in while I was sleeping and have Do Not Disturb turned on.
A pox upon the GOP for not enforcing the Call Registry. A pox upon Democratic leadership for capitulating on that and allowing the GOP to run rampant in dismantling the federal government.

These are focused on the smell, but do not give much attention to the noise created.
The engines are loud so what are the chances someone can hear it?
Being on an airplane is not the only place where people are concerned with odor and noise production.
Not sure why but for some reason I thought it was for an airplane.
Oh I guess the page talks about airport security.

I kind of miss him and his post.
Wouldn’t surprise me if there are some who still want him as our head coach.
I was surprised to read this last night. I wanted him as our head coach.

I think you're correct. I don't see him just changing because he is now the Furd HC.

TAX SEASON
CPA filed our returns last week. I’m usually scrambling to meet his deadline to avoid an extension and extra fee. Now just gotta line up the payments. Really hate that property taxes are due in the same timeframe. 💸💸💸
I have the same gripe about tax season, in general. Too much money is flying out the door because of income taxes and property taxes.
I got my identity stolen last year and so I have to file with a PIN number now. I am still waiting for my return from last year and still need to file with California for last year. Everything got delayed and complicated with my identity being stolen.
Fortunately the feds didn’t issue my return from last tax season but the state did.
Someone stole my identify once but they took one look it at and gave it right back. (Rim shot.)

Sounds like a shaggy dog story on their end.
Speaking of identity theft- incompetent Trump administration releases JFK papers with a couple hundred names, SSNs, birthdates, etc. not redacted.
That should be illegal.

Finished and filed my taxes last Sunday. I was able to schedule withdrawal of what I owed; those amounts were withdrawn as scheduled, today.
I find this efficient, if a touch ruthless.
