SACRAMENTO – The California baseball team (16-12) scored twice in the top of the ninth inning in a 6-5 road win over Sacramento State (15-13) on a chilly Tuesday evening at John Smith Field to wrap up a season-long nine-game road trip with the Bears winning seven of the nine contests. Jarren Advincula (4-5, 2 R) tied a career-high with four hits and had his first four-hit game of the season as one of several Golden Bears' heroes.
I agree that Rivera should have a full control but I hate how the article repeatedly mentioned the school across the bay, as if they have been a successful program. We don't want to be like Stanford. They just fired a HC because of violations, not because of his winning record.
Kevin Kennedy airs questions that need answers. Greg Richardson seems to echo those questions and thoughts.
I generally agree with the idea that the Cal Football GM should have control over the football program. This also points up a problem I have with the reporting structure as it's been announced. The Cal FB GM (Rivera) reports to the Chancellor, but the Cal FB HC (Wilcox) reports to the Cal Athletic Director (Knowlton).
This begs the question of Rivera's role - is he in charge of oversight of the program's administrative tasks (e.g., compliance) and the staff tasked with those important aspects? Or is he something else? And why does he report to the Chancellor (Lyons) and not Knowlton? Also, just as importantly, why does Wilcox report to Knowlton? Who demanded that? Wilcox or Knowlton? Either way, it looks like a way of avoiding accountability (which no one will outright say).
My first thought was that Knowlton demanded that Wilcox continued to report to him because losing football from his portfolio meant diminished stature. Eff that noise! If Knowlton is put off by it, the door is thataway, Jimbo. Don't let the door hit ya in the backside on your way out.
My second thought was that Wilcox demanded continued reporting to Knowlton. If that were the case, then same thing with Wilcox, only with a bit more appreciation for his efforts.
That Stanford's reporting structure is the one that I think should prevail is irrelevant as it pertains to the context of Cal's rivalry with Stanford. But it rankles nonetheless, that LSJU got it right when Cal went for a half-measure that satisfies no one. Also, the fact that LSJU's AD, Bernard Muir, soon thereafter resigned/retired just adds fuel to the fire that Cal's reporting structure is a consequence of pushback from Knowlton and/or Wilcox. Again, eff that noise.
Is he? If he wasn't canned after the McKeever issue, I suspect there are about four million reasons why he is being kept until it gets closer to his 2029 contract expiration.
I’m concerned, since Legends doesn’t reveal its finances, exactly what Kennedy and Richardson will do within the collective’s operations, to try to leverage the athletic department to do what they want it to. If they’re going to take a stand this dramatic, there needs to be full transparency in their dealings as directors/board members. I didn’t ask them to take this stand, did others who donated insist they do this? When they’re heading up such an important arm of the financial feasibility of our teams, I don’t agree with the decision for them to go public with this kind of demand; sure, they’re not saying they will withhold anyone else’s money, but this stinks of conflict of interest, given their positions within the collective as caretakers of other donors’ dollars.
The article makes a good point...withholding dollars hurts the athletes, not the administrators. It's a difficult problem, but I suppose that's the only leverage that the donors have.
They speak for themselves. However it can’t be ignored the positions they hold. Demanding Rivera be placed in a certain role is odd considering they were not involved in the hiring process, etc.; also, have they talked to Rivera about this? In my view, the university brass and/or Athletic Administration fouled up by not revealing exactly what Rivera would be doing. It seems like he was perhaps only hired on to be a consultant. When interviewed about the hire during the rumor phase of his onboarding, he himself seemed pretty murky on what would be his role. He shouldn’t have been hired under the GM name if he wasn’t going to be in charge of FB operations, I will certainly agree on that point. But does anyone here really know what he signed on to actually do? Clearly he agreed to something, and that didn’t include being in charge of football operations. If the university wanted a football GM, they should have hired someone they intended to charge with that full responsibility. I am curious what Ron himself wants out of the existing arrangement.
"Demanding Rivera be placed in a certain role is odd considering they were not involved in the hiring process, etc."
Major donors have sway that other alums outside of the campus structure do not possess. Lyons could have consulted with them before the hiring process was implemented. That these questions are being aired now in these circumstances suggests that Lyons did not consult with this group. It seems that maybe Lyons left that task to Knowlton and yet we're still left with questions about whether or not major donors were consulted at all.
"But does anyone here really know what he signed on to actually do? Clearly he agreed to something, and that didn’t include being in charge of football operations."
No one here knows Rivera's job description beyond a title. Having said that, maybe you could elaborate on what you mean by "football operations". The phrase seems kind of murky and malleable to me. I don't know how extensive the job description is as it pertains to tasks and responsibilities if only because the phrase could be wide-ranging or narrowly focused.

It wasn't Ted that was the factor for me-- agreed, his folksiness could get annoying. But they weren't afraid to take him to darker places later, so his character is not exactly the same throughout S1 or the rest of the seasons. For me, it was the rest of the characters that just grabbed me. Love me some Roy Kent, Danny, Rebecca, and the super literal Dutch Dude.

My only hope is that Lyons knows Knowlton is on his way out so this is just temporary.

I’ve also heard we will finally have free beer…tomorrow.
If Knowlton is on his way out, then there's no reason to wait to put the reporting structure in place.
Push harder.
That's true.
I agree that Wilcox should report to Rivera and Rivera should have complete oversight of the football program. Otherwise he is just a GM in name only.
Respectfully, I disagree strenuously, as what they're demanding is logical.
Who better to make the demand?
They speak for themselves. However it can’t be ignored the positions they hold. Demanding Rivera be placed in a certain role is odd considering they were not involved in the hiring process, etc.; also, have they talked to Rivera about this? In my view, the university brass and/or Athletic Administration fouled up by not revealing exactly what Rivera would be doing. It seems like he was perhaps only hired on to be a consultant. It wasn't Ted that was the factor for me-- agreed, his folksiness could get annoying. But they weren't afraid to take him to darker places later, so his character is not exactly the same throughout S1 or the rest of the seasons. For me, it was the rest of the characters that just grabbed me. Love me some Roy Kent, Danny, Rebecca, and the super literal Dutch Dude.
it gets better as the characters get more developed. S1E7 is great!
