Good. My least favorite player.

Ridiculous ish. Fisher is driving the A's franchise into the ground. He should be kicked out of the club that is The Lords of Baseball because he is clearly NOT a steward of the game. He's the steward of his bank account.

Personally, I blame Bud Selig. Selig DOES NOT belong in the Hall of Fame.

Expand full comment

That's the entirety of professional sports, though. Billionaires double dipping on their fans: obvious fan revenue of tickets, jersey sales, etc., but then also utilizing taxpayer revenue to build stadiums. They "invest" in the team by buying them for billions, but that is just money that gets transferred between the rich and never touches the fans.

Expand full comment

Considering the A's made 88 million last year and he's spending so little on salary, he should be forced to sell.

Expand full comment

Exactly, Fisher's profit is just evidence that he's not a steward of the game. But it's not just the profit. It's also crying poor mouth when, in fact, that's not the case. The A's can afford to build the stadium without Oakland's financial help on infrastructure. Fisher just doesn't want to and Kaval is his accomplice.

Expand full comment

He’s mooching off the other teams and harming MLB’s brand. If he owned a Marriott or Hyatt franchise, they’d probably boot him from their reservation system and pull their flag from his hotel. MLB should do something similar. He is basically committing waste with a MLB franchise

Expand full comment

Most time, the leagues protect owners like him though because it's within their rights to not give a shit about their teams. Look at the Clippers until Sterling outed himself as a racist. They were just a farm team for the rest of the league while he took home the profits. Also, Seattle. A lot of rumors going around that a lot of the reason Stern was against an expansion back into Seattle was because owners didn't want there to be too much precedence of stadiums/arenas being built without fan support -- it would put a chink in the argument that they "just can't afford it".

Expand full comment

Fisher should be forced to sell, for the good of mlb. If the team moves and he is still the owner, nothing is fixed!

Expand full comment

The SF Bay Area market is very definitely large enough to sustain two MLB franchises. Fisher wants out because he can't get Oakland to cough up enough dollars to build the stadium he wants to build. Fisher's not a partner; he's an extortionist.

Expand full comment

Small market. Not. Isn't there a potential audience amongst the 7 million souls in the greater bay area who might want experience American League baseball?

Oh I forgot most A's fans have been driven away by the misdeeds of the franchise owner. Athletics investment group LLC indeed.

Lakers barely win in OT. I was shocked that it was even that close. Bad foul with .1 left by AD on Conley for the game tying 3.

Ryan Mountcastle’s career night dooms Oakland in 12-8 loss

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/4/11/23679705/athletics-vs-orioles-final-score

The struggling Oakland A’s, losers of five straight games and their Ace Kyle Muller looked to turn things around in Baltimore against the Orioles and right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez . The A’s were 2-8 coming in and struggling in almost every facet of the game. They fell to Baltimore 5-1 in the first game of the series on Monday night and were desperately in need of positive outing Tuesday at Camden Yards.

In the top of the first inning, Brent Rooker got the A’s on the board early with line drive to left field that scored Tony Kemp. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Ryan Mountcastle hit a sacrifice fly to center field, that scored Austin Hays tying the game at 1-1.

Giants make the Dodgers look like the Giants

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/4/11/23679758/giants-dodgers-scores-recaps-alex-wood-david-villar-brandon-crawford

In the sixth inning of the San Francisco Giants game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, a familiar scene occurred.

First there was a leadoff single. Then there was a bloop single — the type of hit that looked more like soft approach shot you would have seen at the Masters this weekend than a muscular baseball player trying to hit a ball hard. And then a catcher’s interference loaded the bases with no outs.

You’d seen this happen twice in the past three games, and countless times last year. The bases get loaded with no outs. There’s no big hit. There’s not even a sacrifice fly to score a run. The greatest opportunity in baseball is squandered.

Dave Roberts sitting Max Muncy v. the LH Alex Wood, after what he’s done at the park, not to mention the heater he was on last night, is emblematic of this strictly analytics-based lunacy. All so Chris Taylor could pull an 0-fer with 3 K’s…tough to see the Doyers winning a legitimate title with this guy…

Also letting CT3 bat with the bases loaded with the righty pitching. Though Scott Alexander was in the pen so I guess Roberts thought that CT3 vs the righty was better than Muncy vs Alexander.

Dodgers offense disappears again, as the Giants tie up the series

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/4/11/23679820/dodgers-offense-bad-shutout-giants-recap

The Dodgers' offense continued its early season trend of feast or famine when it comes to run production either coming in bunches or not at all, as the Giants took this one 5-0 on Tuesday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Both starters struggled with command, walking a combined seven batters, but only the Giants managed to capitalize on those opportunities. When the bullpens came in, it was Evan Phillips who got bit by the long ball, allowing back-to-back homers to David Villar and Brandon Crawford in the eighth, to completely put this game out of the reach.

The Kaypro.

Despite being the first model to be released commercially, the original system was branded as the Kaypro II (at a time when one of the most popular microcomputers was the Apple II). The Kaypro II was designed to be portable like the Osborne, contained in a single enclosure with a handle for carrying.[1] Set in an aluminum case, with a keyboard that snapped onto the front, covering the 9" CRT display and drives, it weighed 29 pounds (13 kg) and was equipped with a Zilog Z80 microprocessor, 64 kilobytes of RAM, and two 5¼-inch double-density single-sided floppy disk drives. It ran Digital Research, Inc.'s CP/M operating system, the industry standard for 8-bit computers with 8080 or Z80 CPUs, and sold for about US$1,795 (equivalent to $5,000 in 2021).

I just finished the year's 37th book, Surrender by Bono. It was surprisingly extremely interesting. Not ghostwritten, and he's very self aware of his irritants and failings. It's not a traditional memoir in that it's non-linear and doesn't go through his whole life (though it touches on incidents from every era), but it's well worth a read.

I have also recently enjoyed The Match by Harlan Coben and The Lemon by S.E. Boyd, which is a well-done satire of the celebrity chef industry.

recent reads .. as i have been reading more than average. already 11 books this year. my stated goal each year is 24. i usually start strong, have a summer lull, and maybe read more in the fall.

The Maid by Nita Prose - the main character is infuriating and likable all at once. at first i thought it was a "dumb book" but as i read more and more i am appreciating that the world is made up of so many people that all are seeing it through very different lenses and emotions.  what seems "completely normal and logical" to me is probably "infuriating" for someone else.

Whereabouts - latest by Jhumpa Lahiri which is about middle age despair and loneliness which we can all relate to as this age. not as good as her other stuff, but much better than average.
