Q: What happens when you stop flouridating water?

A: More tooth decay. For example, 18% more kids with tooth decay in second grade

I remember watching a show, maybe on PBS, where they showed kids in eastern ky appalachia where their teeth were rotten from drinking Mountain Dew all day. Can't imagine how much worse without flouride.

Liege-Bastogne-Liege

Pogacar crushed everyone AGAIN on the hardest hill of the day and seemingly rode to an easy victory. the effort of course was not easy. It just seemed like he rode away from everyone else as if they were standing still, no different than a few days ago.

at home, Liege wafels were eaten and thoroughly enjoyed.

this was the 4th of the 5 monuments and the last of the spring classics. the 5th and final monument is in the fall, the Tour of Lombardia, and very poetically nicknamed the "race of the falling leaves" after the 3 grand tours in the summer.

now the cycling season transitions to stage races and grand tours (not one day races). the Giro d'Italiia which is my favorite of the 3 grand tours starts May 9 (i think) and is a 3 wk race all up and down Italy.

FYI > Giro d'Italia in May, Tour de France in July, Vuelta a Espana in Sep.

The blatant lawlessness of the deportations to foreign countries is absolutely shocking. I know it is in the news, but honestly not enough. It really is a sea change from the USA as the bedrock rule of law country in the world to something more like communist China where the laws are enforced and broken arbitrarily and cruelly by the party in power. I know the tariff stuff is really bad, too, but this is really the worst of the worst

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

Yup, it is the worst of the worst. And all in service to a "leader" who's running a huge con/grift. The phrase "selective enforcement" comes to mind, but that's only sugarcoating it. This is really trashy totalitarianism of the worst sort. The tipping point towards gulags and death squads isn't very far off.

Expand full comment
O.Overall's avatar

I mean are we not there? The prison in El Sal is a foreign gulag. The US govt is totally indifferent to whether you die there; they have washed their hands of it by shipping you there. Their stated defense is that they can’t do anything even in cases of mistakes bc it is a foreign country not under our jurisdiction. So that means they can pick up literally anyone and ship them there to die and oh well if it’s a mistake then golly jee don’t you understand you have to break some eggs to make an omelet? Truly incredible

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

I think we are there when it comes to gulags. The only thing remaining is the widespread use of detention camps in a set of remote locations, which will call to mind the phrase "getting sent to Siberia".

July 2nd should be a red letter day for the American Health. Apparently, there is a Federal Law that requires a 60 day cooling off period from when RFK fired everyone and put in his own people + the Health Secy needs to appear before Congress, which is already scheduled. So on July 2nd, RFK Jr will essentially have carte blanche to do whatever he wants.

Another walk-off in a totally normal and expected fashion

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2025/4/27/24419119/san-francisco-giants-4-27-2025-recap-heliot-ramos-walk-off-rangers-mlb-scores

I can’t think of a more fitting end to the San Francisco Giants 17-game stretch than Heliot Ramos’s walk-off Little League homer on Sunday.

Not quite on par with the athleticism of Angel Pagan’s a dozen years ago — and certainly not as “clean” — but that final trip around the bases on Sunday will go down in club history as unparalleled in its goofiness. A delirious scramble of unexpected twists, of over-the-shoulder turns, of dirty pants and scraped knees and out-of-breath belly flops ending at home. Finally, it was over. The game, the series, the marathon set of four different cities playing five different teams — Ramos took a well-deserved moment sprawled out over the plate to quietly find his breath through the hiccups of laughter before the mob descended.

It's also notable that the NL West is probably the most competitive division in MLB right now.

The teams in 1st through 3rd places in the NL West (Giants, Dodgers, and Padres) have no more than 11 losses. In the rest of MLB, only 3 other teams (the Yankees, the Tigers, and the Mets) out of 25 other teams have no more than 11 losses.

Granted, it's still early in the season yet, so it will probably change. But only one other division (AL West) has 2 teams chasing the leader within 1.5 games of 1st.

Gladiator II - 13/19

this was ok. it seemed a little contrived that ex-Roman heir to the throne would become a prisoner-of-war-turned-gladiator.

reminded me a little of Top Gun Maverick in trying really hard to connect the dots to an old movie that did really well. Top Gun probably pulled it off a bit better.

IMO the problem is that the lead actor is all wrong for the role. I've liked Paul Mescal in other stuff, but he comes across as more of an "emo sad boy" type than a stoic action lead like a Gladiator movie needs.
