Absolutely unreal video of the earthquake in Myanmar last month. This is apparently the first ever footage of the earth's crust actually splitting apart.
That's something, alright. I got the sense that the horizontal displacement could have been as much as 8 to 10 feet. I have no way to know if this is anywhere close to reality or just a wild-ass guess.
EDIT: I did watch it twice more and noticed some landmarks in the background and their movements.
A solar panel on a pole is visible through the opening in the middle of the frame. It almost disappears behind the wall on the right.
A tower carrying high voltage power lines (presumably) in the upper right background appears to hinge forward toward the camera about 0:16 into the clip.
Over the short wall on the left, you can see the bare earth rupture. Also, it appears that something fell from above ground level on the left and destroyed a container (barrel?) on the ground.
Also, the caption under the frame says that side-to-side movement may have been as much as 6m (20 feet) in some places.
Steph Curry could only watch from the sidelines as the Minnesota Timberwolves ended his 16th NBA season on Wednesday night. The Stephless Golden State Warriors were dominated in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinal matchup, losing 121-110. The Dubs were ahead in the series 1-0 when Curry went down with an injury. They needed to win one of the next four games to give him a chance to return. They simply couldn’t do it.
After a dominant 11-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night at Chavez Ravine, the Athletics faced off against them again tonight in game two of the three-game series at Dodger Stadium. The A’s sent 25-year-old rookie righty Gunnar Hoglund to the mound to face 26-year-old righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers.
Bases loaded on Tuesday, he delivered a game changing grand slam.
Bases loaded in the 2nd today — his first at-bat of the day — he punched an RBI single to right.
Bases loaded with 2-outs in the bottom of the 9th — the tying run 90 feet from home, the winning run not far behind that — Koss flared one to his sweet-spot in shallow right-center…and it was caught.
Giants have hit a little mini-skid here, but the silver lining is that they are mostly one-run losses that could have gone either way so it's not like they are getting roasted.
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers hit three home runs, giving Yoshinobu Yamamoto the most run support he’s had this season in a 9-3 win over the A’s on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.
It was a bit of a seesaw for most of the middle game of the series, with the Dodgers scoring in the first two innings, the A’s taking the lead with runs in the third and fourth innings, then the Dodgers plating single runs in the fifth and sixth to re-take the lead.
Cal football reception in NYC w/ Wilcox and Rivera
we met Tarik Glenn and Steve Levy. that was pretty cool.
HAG probably has more nitty-gritty details on what Rivera/Wilcox had to say about recruiting, transfer portal, etc.
i was talking to Wilcox for a bit and he said that there are 3 long trips next year (VTech, BC, L'ville) and of those VTech has by far the best football atmosphere and home crowd of the 3.
i was generally impressed. they seem like they are doing a good job given the circumstances. they didnt promise championships or anything, just that they would do their best to stay competitive.
These are the things I remember. Can't guarantee I remembered things correctly, but here is my best shot at it.
Their discussion on how they handle recruiting was pretty good. They basically said they have a full list of all the potential incoming transfers and monitor them as players leave. So it isn't like they're caught unprepared when players leave. The very first thing they do is to verify they can succeed academically. They have people watching film.
Lots of good things said about Rolovich and Harsin. That Harsin has had success and lots of good offensive ideas. That the team will adjust the offense based on the players strengths rather than have the players adjust to a specific offense style.
Also about the new house bill for NIL, Wilcox said they anticipate something passing between the next few days and a few weeks. He said that the current transfer/NIL is basically the worst now and it will get better going forward. There will only be 1 transfer portal session (didn't say when).
For players leaving, sometimes they graduate with eligibility remaining and the program basically says congratulations and go find a new program. I think they said something like this. Either way, regardless of how the coaches feel, then end up taking the high road and thank the player and wish them success. Someone asked about JKS and how that whole recruiting thing went. Does the team basically have someone watch him 24/7? Wilcox didn't go into details but he basically said JKS committed early on, the team constantly communicated with him and he seemed like a strong commit. It was a gut punch when JKS called and said he was going to Oregon. As a coach, internally he was devistated and maybe there were things he wanted to say. But as the adult, he took the high road and wished him luck. And he ended up transferring back after heading up to Oregon. He intimated that maybe there was a culture difference. But by taking the high road, he didn't destroy any chance of JKS coming back.
They also did say they had a position group that lost 5 players. 3 they anticipated would leave due to graduating or not having eligibility left I think. They didn't think the other 2 would both leave. Perhaps 1 but not both. I assume he's talking about the RB position.
For the long travel, the program NEVER mentions the long travel and being at a disadvantage. If you even mention this to a teenager/early 20s kid, they may use this as an excuse. They basically give pros for these trips, not cons. If you're from the east coast, you get to play near your family. If you're from the west coast, you get to see a different part of the country. You provide the best support for them for the trip. Make sure they're fed and hydrated properly. Provide a way for them to get rest on the flight (Delta has provided a plane with 30 lie flats). make sure they provide a way to study and succeed academically, etc. Basically Wilcox said that the reason they lost the away games wasn't due to the long travel. They proved they could play and mainly they couldn't make a kick. (too soon?)
Someone asked about how they give playing time. For example, if they had a potential stud as a freshman, would they not play them as much so that they don't get as much expose and a different team will not recruit them as a transfer. Or the other way where they play someone more for fear of them transferring out. Wilcox basically said we play players to give the team the best chance of succeeding and that's all. With 80+ plays, there are a lot of reps for lots of players. Some players will play 100% of plays and some others will have a rotation. For example, Craig Woodson absolutely would play 100% of the plays. But there was rotation amongst the other DBs. Uluave as a freshman started the season playing on special teams, but I think someone got hurt and he got a chance for game reps at MLB later in the season. He absolutely wasn't ready to do that game 1 but later in the season he improved and absolutely deserved starting at the end of the year based on his improvement.
Another person asked about how much it takes to fund football. Is the team in the red or the black every year. Everything from travel to staff to food to equipment, etc. Wilcox said he had no idea, RR guessed maybe 30-50 million. They just provided a budget request to the university so they'll see how much they actually get.
Tarik Glenn is the executive director for the football academics support group (forgot the exact name).
Someone asked about how the UC professors being anti football. RR said there are faculty that love and support football. That the anti-football faculty might be no more than 10% of the faculty. But they get the most publicity. They're trying to work with the faculty to understand the players aren't just players. They had Tarik say something about this and he was saying things like by having players talk with faculty and the program showing those faculty members that the players aren't just there for football. That they have other things they provide to the community, etc.
Heh...no didn't ask that one. Also didn't ask about killing the careers of multiple PKs.
The one thing I thought about asking was how to market the team to bay area alums/potential fans now that the A's and Raiders are gone. For example, bringing back the family ticket package which is like 2 adults and 2 kids for a low price.
This may be my last OOC game, maybe ever. About a third of my department got wiped out today. And I expect to get my Portuguese visa in one to two years. If my job goes away too - which seems inevitable - I can very much see myself just retiring, unwinding my positions here in the US, and then go roast artisanal coffee or cook in a restaurant somewhere in Europe.
Oof...sorry to hear that. Just need to get Cal to play in Portugal. I thought I heard that US citizens can get a Portuguese visa by buying a house over something like 750K.
That visa program was eliminated in both Portugal and Spain. They were too popular and caused resentment of foreigners buying up houses and being to blame for housing prices skyrocketing well out of local's affordability

Cal found itself in 12th place in the 14-team field after carding a 20-over-par 308 in the first round but rebounded by shooting 11-under across the final 36 holes to clinch its spot in college golf's ultimate stage.
Three prominent members of the Cal Athletics community will be formally inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday.
Former Golden Bear women's soccer star Alex Morgan, former men's basketball head coach Mike Montgomery and civil rights activist and sports sociology Professor Emeritus Dr. Harry Edwards are among the class of 2025 that was previously announced in February and will be honored at the BASHOF Enshrinement Dinner.
BERKELEY – The No. 9 California women's rowing team will compete in its first-ever ACC Championship this weekend at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina. The Golden Bears enter as the No. 2 seed in each of the five races that will be held at the event.

The term "student-athlete" is an effective and accurate description of young men and women who engage in both academic and athletic activities, but sometimes it feels as if it falls short of providing the full picture of what many student-athletes bring to the University of California and the surrounding campus community.
The California softball team (35-19) will begin its quest for the 2025 Women's College World Series at the Norman Region against Summit League tournament champion Omaha (39-11) on Friday at Love's Field in Norman, Oklahoma.
