The opening stage of the Tour de France saw an incredibly rare family one-two, with Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) storming clear on the final descent, fending off a hard-chasing Jumbo-Visma, and sprinting home ahead of the rest in Bilbao.
The duo traded pulls more or less evenly, but cramps in the finale saw Simon unable to answer a push by his sibling on the final uphill drag to the line. They finished four seconds apart, with Adam Yates’ teammate Tadej Pogačar beating Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) and nine others for third.
Victor Lafay (Cofidis) stunned the favorites Sunday with a late-stage attack to fend off Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) to win stage 2 at the Tour de France.
Lafay pounced under the red kite, and had the juice to hold it to the line to spoil the day for Van Aert in a reduced bunch sprint.
Between the wild, soaked sprint race on Saturday and the proud tradition of the entire field getting penalized for exceeding track limits on turn 10, it was an exciting weekend of racing at Red Bull Ring. And we even saw the end of Max Verstappen's streak of 249 consecutive laps led
he 2023 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix was one of the messier races I've seen in a long time, with more drivers getting five-second penalties for exceeding track limits than I could count. Ferrari once again seemed confused about tire strategy, several drivers made contact during overtaking in turn four, and Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton was ratting out every other driver he saw exceeding track limits. However, despite all the mess, Red Bull's Max Verstappen couldn't be stopped.
Almost frustratingly, Verstappen was perfect throughout the Austrian GP. While he didn't lead every lap, breaking his streak of leading laps since the Miami GP almost a month ago, it took Red Bull telling him to pit to knock him out of first place. After his first pit stop, Ferrari's duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were ahead of Verstappen, with the former in the lead and the latter playing defense in an attempt to keep Verstappen at bay. However, the Dutchman made quick and easy work of dispatching both Ferrari drivers, retaking the lead in just a few short laps.
Just returned from two weeks in London, Bath, Oxford. Crowded! Usually avoid Europe in the summer but was traveling with a choral group to fulfill a performance tour twice postponed due to CV19 (originally scheduled for Vienna in 2020). The Brits were generous hosts, graciously handling the masses. We even caught a baseball game - Cubs v. Cards. Fortunately no issues with my United flights (SFO - LHR - SFO) and the crews were outstanding.
In Providence, RI right now. Moved No 1 from Philly to Providence. I drove the box truck and Google Maps had me take Hutchingson Parkway N of NYC. Apparently they don't allow trucks due to low overhang. About 5.5 hours drive from Philly to Providence.
Going to the Red Sox game tomorrow and then dropping No 2 off at Logan. I'm flying back Thurs night.
Had our trip for the year but planning next year's, London and Spain (tentatively Barcelona and San Sebastián). Already got my ticket for a premier league match to see my favorite team.
My sister-in-law finally got home after being stuck for five days in Denver. Apparently, United cancelled 3k flights due to a combination of weather, labor shortages/sick-outs, and a lack of spare capacity due to the Independence Day holiday. Hotels were full. AirBnBs were full. There were no spare rental cars. Her family had luckily decided not to check in their luggage, but she said there were families who did and were stuck in the airport with nothing - including families with infants who ran out of formula and diapers. She told me she's billing United the costs, but I didn't have the heart to tell her that she's getting something like $150 total for their troubles.
I was supposed to be in Portland over the weekend for a work trip. A few hours before my flight United texted me that it was cancelled because they didn't have enough staff to crew the plane. There were no options to get from BWI to PDX for a couple days, so I had to cancel the trip.
That sucks across the board. It’s interesting (to me, when I’m not caught up in it) to see how these problems ripple or crash through a system, the compounding effect of multiple problems. Also a great argument for not traveling during peak periods if you can avoid it (which I recognize is easier said than done)
