You come across an American restaurant in a foreign country. What would you expect to see on the menu?

Expand full comment

Hamburgers

Expand full comment

In Germany I ordered American salad with California dressing. This turned out to be iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, and thousand island dressing.

Expand full comment

In Lisbon we walked by an American Diner type restaurant. Basically had food you would except like in a diner.

Expand full comment

I'm not really sure what an "American" restaurant even means. Denny's? Chile's?

What is really American food? Corn dogs? Meat loaf, I guess...but I don't see that as having international renown. Most of our food seems to have come from other countries, and then been tweaked.

A burger is American-ish (at least with the buns), but those are ubiquitous (Mickey D's, etc.)

Expand full comment

I would like these places to be cheeky and offer stuff like deep-dish pizza, orange chicken, Mission style burritos, California rolls, etc., as that's the real value of "American" cuisine: immigrant tweaks on traditional food from the homeland.

Stopped at one in Paris once. They had hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs. Don't remember what else. You'd think there'd be Marconi and cheese, also meat loaf.

Expand full comment

Marconi was Italian. But then, Italy is much closer to France than the U.S.

Ex-smokers of the DBD - how was quitting for you?

Expand full comment

Surprisingly easy - I was only an intermittent smoker (stress and booze), and one day I woke up with my smoke-reeking hand on my face and a top 5 lifetime hangover. Didn’t stop me from drinking but put me right off cigarettes

Expand full comment

Uh... what kind of smoking are we discussing?

Expand full comment

Took me seven years and fifteen days to quit, if that answers your question. Haven't had a puff since 1986.

Expand full comment

Easy peezy. But I was never much of a smoker. 1/2 pack at most in a day. More like 3 or 4 cigs. I quit in 1985.

Dolores Claiborne is another movie that has clear differences between it and the novella. Quite frankly, I like the movie very much, but the novella is a horror story in ways that probably wouldn't have translated to the screen. The novella is very good, indeed.

Expand full comment

The movie script very closely resembles the book; word for word in stretches. But there are clear differences here and there including Red not detailing his crime in the movie.

A’s crush Tigers in 12-3 blowout

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/7/5/23785245/oakland-athletics-detroit-tigers-austin-pruitt-ken-waldichuk-jordan-diaz

It was an encore performance from the A’s pitching staff today with Austin Pruitt and Ken Waldichuk holding the Tigers scoreless for the first 7 innings after JP Sears did the same on his own yesterday.

Pruitt was originally announced as today’s “opener”, but after he finished the 1st inning without a baserunner, Mark Kotsay put him out there for the 2nd against an almost all-righty lineup. He followed up his perfect 1st with a perfect 2nd, and then came back out for a perfect 3rd. Though he only got one strikeout, Pruitt clearly had Detroit’s batters off balance throughout his outing. Amazingly, five of his nine outs were infield popups, while another two were groundouts. After his five perfect innings in a spot start last year, it might be worthwhile to see what Pruitt could do with a little rotation run.

Cobb shuts down Mariners to dodge sweep

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/7/6/23785530/mlb-final-giants-mariners-7-5-2023-recap-alex-cobb

Alex Cobb pitched 6 shutout innings in the San Francisco Giants 2 - 0 win against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, helping to avoid a series sweep at home and to pump the brakes on the team’s four game losing streak.

Cobb maybe didn’t have his best stuff but he made up for it with a veteran will to attack the zone and force Seattle hitters to earn their knocks. The knocks certainly came but Cobb scattered them, allowing 6 hits while issuing 0 free bases and striking out 7 over the start.

J.D. Martinez & David Peralta homer, Dodgers bullpen escapes to beat Pirates

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/7/5/23785402/dodgers-home-runs-jd-martinez-david-peralta-ryan-brasier-daniel-hudson-bases-loaded-escape-pirates

The Dodgers bounced back after a rough defeat to overcome an early deficit beat the Pirates 6-4, headlined by back-to-back homers from J.D. Martinez, and David Peralta.

The Pirates certainly didn’t make it easy, twice loading the bases in the seventh and ninth, but in both occasions, the Dodgers bullpen survived and thrived, allowing no runs to cross the plate, holding on to a precious two-run lead.

The Last Kingdom - Seven Kings Must Die (13/19)

this was a fine wrap-up conclusion to the whole thing, but it wasnt nearly as gripping or suspenseful as the series/episodes.

there must be some formula that is used for movie making that is inconsistent w/ episode making since this same problem plagues the Star Trek movies, Downton Abbey, etc.

that is .. the movies are fine but rarely great.

Agreed. Everything seemed rushed, which though to be expected for a movie v. a series, was nonetheless a slight turnoff.

But Uhtred remains one of the more iconic original series characters of any platform.

Harvard Legacy Admissions Targeted by Massachusetts Lawmakers

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-05/harvard-targeted-by-massachusetts-lawmakers-on-legacy-admissions

A bill in Massachusetts seeks to tax rich colleges that favor families of alumni and donors in admissions policies — namely Harvard University — and give the money to poorer community colleges.

The legislation targets Harvard, Williams College and a half-dozen other schools that use preferences for students whose parents attended the college, called legacies, and meet a threshold of current endowment value per student. Cambridge-based Harvard, the richest US college with a $50.1 billion endowment, would be assessed an estimated $103 million a year, the largest fee, according to sponsors.
