The Athletics evened up their series with the Mariners on Tuesday evening, beating them 6-1 to set up the rubber match tomorrow in the finale.
Severino conquers home demons
A lot has been said about starting pitcher Luis Severino. The club has gotten uneven results from their expensive offseason investment but it’s been especially bad at home, where he consistently gets knocked around. Entering tonight he had a home ERA well into the 6’s while his road stats look much more like the production the A’s thought they would be getting. If he doesn’t get traded and sticks around into next year, he needs to figure out how to pitch in the minor league stadium his squad plays in.
When you have a long-running TV sitcom, it becomes difficult to come out with fresh, frustrating situations for the main characters involved. How many times can Ross and Rachel break up, get back together, and break up again? Is there a new way that Steve Urkel can destroy the Winslow family’s home with his harebrained inventions and clumsiness? Would Jack Tripper really schedule dates with two different women at the same restaurant over and over without learning from his mistakes?
The Dodgers clawed their way back from a two-run deficit to steal the middle match and take the series from the Cincinnati Reds by a final score of 5-4.
Coming off a complete game shutout in his most recent start, Nick Lodolo continued his torrid second half by striking out the side in order in the top of the first. Tyler Glasnow only managed one strikeout in the bottom half, but also faced the minimum.
Air Intake - A way to improve the engine performance by introducing colder air with more oxygen into the engine. Except for most people it ends up being a hot air intake because they just remove the intake box and put the filter cone in the engine bay.
Not our worry right now. Heat index is already 99 and dew point in the upper 70s. I don’t generally sweat much but the last few days I’ve gotten home soaking wet. Supposed to be more seasonable starting tomorrow.
Mrs Slug likes cold brew. She prefers it especially during the warm weather months. She's going back up to Sacramento County in two days to help her mom who was recently released from the hospital. I expect she'll be drinking cold brew while she's there.
So, instead of paying someone else to make it, I learned how to make it. Mrs Slug says she likes my cold brew very much. She also likes my hot coffee when she has that.
Anyhow, I started a new batch of cold brew on Monday night. Mrs Slug likes the flavors after the batch has been sitting about 48-72 hours. I expect that she'll decant it either tonight or tomorrow morning.
Grind the coffee beans on a coarse setting. Grind in 4 batches of 60 grams each. Place the grounds (60g) in one filter bag. Tie the end of the bag with the drawstring. Place in the Mason jar. Follow each step until you have 240 grams of coffee grounds.
WATER
I'm fortunate enough to have excellent tap water. If your tap water quality is suspect, get filtered water. You'll need more than a quart to yield 1,200 grams of water. (My guess is that 1,200 grams of water is about 5+ cups)
BREWING
Place a ring and lid on the Mason jar and its contents. Place it on a shelf somewhere it won't be disturbed. We use a shelf not in direct sunlight. I am uncertain what would happen if it were in direct sunlight.
Within a few minutes, you will notice that the water next to the bags will become dark, a very dark brown very similar to the color of Guiness stout. I like to shake things up a bit after about 10 to 15 minutes. I pick up the jar with both hands, one on the top and one on the bottom and grasp firmly. With a quick motion, turn the jar upside down and return it to an upright position. Do this 2 or 3 times and return it to the shelf.
We allow the batch to brew 48 to 72 hours before straining.
STRAINING
Use a 1-quart jar or a 750 ml bottle and another smaller container. If you strain into a 750 ml bottle with a stopper (often used for fermented beverages), you'll need a funnel and a sieve or strainer. Mrs Slug likes to use a 750 ml bottle and places the remainder in a smaller container, although she could just use a 1-quart Mason jar.
EQUIPMENT
Coffee scale - I use a scale that measures in grams. I got it off of Amazon for about $20 last year (2024).
Burr grinder - I use a Baratza Encore grinder set to 24, which is the finest setting I would use. I think the Peet's recipe calls for a setting of between 24 and 30 on a burr grinder.
Filter bags - the filter bags I use are $5.99 on Amazon, described as 50pcs No Mess Cold Brew Bags, 4x6 inch Disposable Coffee Filter Bag Fine Mesh Brewing Drawstring Puches for Iced Coffee Hot Tea Herb Spice (from the HRX Package store).
The Golden Bears have enjoyed a successful summer so far on the world stage. Six of the 10 members of the California men's rowing team who competed at this past weekend's U23 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, walked away with medals highlighted by Wilson Morton, who helped the U.S. win gold in the men's four.
Golden Bear alumnus and former Team USA member Donothan Bailey has joined the California men's gymnastics staff as an assistant coach, head coach Bryan Del Castillo announced Tuesday. Bailey, a three-time All-American at Cal and a U.S. pommel horse champion, joins the Bears from Kinetic Gymnastics in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he has spent the past two-and-a-half years as team coach of its boys' and girls' programs.

What's the process? Do you just soak the beans or the grounds in water in the fridge, then filter?
I do it based on a Peet's recipe that is also available on YouTube. To summarize -
(1) Grind coffee beans and place in filter bags.
(2) Place filled filter bags in 2-quart Mason jar.
(3) Fill Mason jar with cold water (5 parts water, by weight, to 1 part coffee grounds) and use a ring and lid to seal the jar.
(4) Place Mason jar on a shelf for a minimum of 12 hours.
(5) Strain into a 1-quart jar or other similar sized container. A 750 ml bottle won't hold all the cold brew.
RECIPE
240 grams of coffee
1,200 grams of cold water (water quality makes a big difference)
4 filter bags (4"x6" disposable coffee filter bags)
2-quart Mason jar with ring and lid
COFFEE
Grind the coffee beans on a coarse setting. Grind in 4 batches of 60 grams each. Place the grounds (60g) in one filter bag. Tie the end of the bag with the drawstring. Place in the Mason jar. Follow each step until you have 240 grams of coffee grounds.
