Thanks for posting. Was running around this morning

g.oso's avatar

Don’t know if I’m going to make it tonight. I have to go out to San Leandro after work.

It would be good to see you again if you can come!

Iceland's Fagradalsfjall volcano starts erupting again. It's the one near the main airport.

Amazon buys Roomba. You know those vacuums are going to start collecting data on you, right?

https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/5/23293349/amazon-acquires-irobot-roomba-robot-vacuums

Justbear's avatar

They collect data everywhere so I've already given up. Adding one data collecting device won't make a difference. The other day my friend and I were talking about duplicating keys and we were conversing in Japanese. Few minutes later, I opened yelp app to look up where to eat. The first message I see on the app is "Are you looking for a locksmith?"

SGBear's avatar

There has been moments where I get ads like that and made me suspicious. As a joke, our family talks about needing to buy diapers (our kid is 17 years old) as a red herring to see if our Google devices pick up on it.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Did Google recommend diapers to the your 17 year old?

SGBear's avatar

Nope. If it did, I would probably be a full blown conspiracy theorist.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Well I'm a believer in the conspiracy...I was talking on the phone with my buddy Darren about building a pergola and later that night, my Facebook ad was pergolas from Home Depot...

SGBear's avatar

You might have a nice baseball card collection, but do you have a Zuck?

https://apnews.com/article/oddities-mark-zuckerberg-bd143b648b4c03c6480d4abc1e116a61

Cugel's avatar

No Idea, I have 38,000 - anybody want to buy?

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Between wine, real estate, and now baseball cards...you are skirting that fine line between collector and hoarder.

Cugel's avatar

haha, the wine, yes - these, no. Got them from a guy who didn't pay the rent (only $20 per month!).

GoldenSD81's avatar

What was he renting for $20 a month? A storage box in your garage?

Cugel's avatar

Nope, an 8' x 8' area to store stuff, or like 32 cents a foot.

SGBear's avatar

Name a player who is less skilled, but hits well above his weight because of his/her attitude, hustle, and/or intangibles.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Are you referring to his CFB or NFL career?

SGBear's avatar

CFB. Dude was a force at the college level. Extra effort works in college. You can scramble. You can ad-lib. You can lean on superior skilled-players. And you can be charming as heck all packaged up in a born-again virgin beefcake package.

At the pro level, he got exposed because you actually need next-level talent.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He definitely hustled hard for Jesus but he was a 5* talent, surrounded by a bunch of 4* and 5* talent with one of the best CFB HC in modern history who knew how to use Tebow and his talents. Tebow was tailor made for those Florida offenses, similar to how Tommy Frazier skill set was perfect for those Nebraska teams.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

A few names that came up on last week's column about Cal players who overachieved at the next level. Fransisco Elson, CJ Anderson, Sean Marks(player).

GlueAndBold's avatar

Evan Weaver, consummate college athlete

O.Overall's avatar

What happened to him - is he on a NFL roster?

Justbear's avatar

Aaron Rodgers . He was one of really good players to play at Cal, but his name means so much more now and even his Cal career has been lifted into a legend status.

Sinema exacts her pound of flesh from Schumer by raising taxes via taxing stock buybacks, but spending $5b of it to address drought in Arizona

https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/04/politics/chuck-schumer-economic-bill-saturday/index.html

GoldenSD81's avatar

I would say that was about a half pound at most.

The tax thing is frustrating but not a lot of money in this package. The $5b for drought in Arizona is a good thing and needed.

O.Overall's avatar

It is kind of nuts that she went to the mat to maintain lower tax rates on compensation for private equity guys, maybe the least sympathetic people in the universe. But I suppose you just swallow that and be happy that she signed on. She is such a loony toon

DC Trojan's avatar

perhaps she thinks that's where she's going to get the money for her centrist presidential campaign... or maybe she just wants to cash in when she gets bored of being the quirky senator and this is greasing the skids for a future payday.

O.Overall's avatar

I feel like it must be the former. Actually working in PE is probably too much work

Kapler tossed in Giants loss

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/8/4/23292904/mlb-scores-san-francisco-giants-los-angeles-dodgers-recap-gabe-kapler-mookie-betts

The San Francisco Giants continue to make history in 2022, dropping their 8th straight loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers which topped the dubious mark set by the 1980 team and matched the 1979 team.

Final score: 5-3. It was L.A.’s third series sweep against the Giants this season. It was the first time they swept them in a four-game series in SF since 1977.

Newly acquired J.D. Davis had given the Giants a 2-1 lead off Clayton Kershaw in the 2nd with a 2-run homer that clanged off the arcade tin in right.

Dodgers lose Clayton Kershaw, but sweep Giants behind Mookie Betts

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/4/23292311/dodgers-giants-clayton-kershaw-back-injury-mookie-betts-sweep

The Dodgers allowed only ten runs in a four-game sweep of the Giants, the first such sweep for Los Angeles in San Francisco since July 1-4, 1977. Mookie Betts and Trea Turner homered in the Dodgers’ 5-3 win on getaway day Thursday afternoon, but Los Angeles also lost Clayton Kershaw to a back injury.

Kershaw allowed two runs, one of them earned, in four innings, both runs coming on a two-run home run for J.D. Davis, San Francisco’s main trade-deadline acquisition. Davis hit a changeup, just the 11th thrown by Kershaw all season, and only the third put into — or, in this case, out of — play.

Mike Yastrzemski finished off the third inning with a flyout to shallow center, marking the 10,000th batter Kershaw faced in the regular season in his career. But Kershaw faced only three more batters, walking off the field with head trainer Thomas Albert during warm-up pitches in the fifth.

Garbers performance with Raiders

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

I'd rather talk about Jordan Veasy's 2 catches for 16 yards, on 5 targets.

He and Garbers can go full Tercel offense for the Raiders.

Macarolina's avatar

Fun to watch him do well- and the re-link with Veasey.

goldenone's avatar

A comments board on a Raiders fan site had folks picking him over Nick Mullens, though realistically he'll have to really shine to avoid the practice squad and take third string duties. But who knows.

Cugel's avatar

He looked pretty good, good enough for a back-up at least.

goldenone's avatar

He's far from perfect but he was the Pac-12 leader in total offense.

g.oso's avatar

Then again, it was the Jags

Cugel's avatar

True, maybe they suck, not 100% sure - but - the one thing he did way better than as a QB for us was keep his eyes on the receiver and make the throw.

g.oso's avatar

Except that batted down ball and the overthrow on 3rd and 2

DC Trojan's avatar

or a sham, you know, whatever works

Peetyjay's avatar

Maybe he hired Michael Pollen as his agent?

goldenone's avatar

It'll be interesting to see if Rodgers gets a new agey book deal.

SGBear's avatar

Angels club SEVEN solo homeruns. They also lost. To the A's. Losing pitcher: Jason Junk, who has a 6.48 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.

W4C hosted a watch-along for the 2007 Cal vs. Tennessee "Wizard of Returns" Game

https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/write-for-cals-inaugural-watch-a

SGBear's avatar

It was fun. I think everyone mis-remembered how close the game was.

Cugel's avatar

Eh, not me anyway, sat next to a Tennessee fan (smart guy) it was close enough he stayed until maybe three minutes to go.

Justbear's avatar

It was fun. Talked a lot about what could have been.

g.oso's avatar

Cal football: What could have been.

sycasey's avatar

Quite a few teams in Cal history that could have been great if only a QB injury hadn't derailed the season.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Dave Barr, Longshore, Garbers (OK not great, but much better).

<<kristen.bell.crying.gif>>

goldenone's avatar

All down hill from the Kevin Riley moment.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm sorry I don't recall that moment. I thought the game and the season was cancelled with 30 seconds left in the game and we ended up No 1 in the nation...

Justbear's avatar

More like Longhsore injury

GoldenSD81's avatar

You see…what could have been.
