ICYMI: Kellogg split into two companies 10 months ago - WK Kellogg Company and Kellanova. The former will have some of the company's slower growth US-based cereals and Kellanova will have the faster growth cereal brands and products. Well, Mars just announced it will buy Kellanova for $30b. So Cheez-It brand (I will always call it Cheez-Its) will be owned by Mars. So now both companies can sell Kellogg branded cereals, just some won't be owned by Kellogg anymore.

Expand full comment

That seems not quite right. Kellanova doesn't have any cereal other than Special K (which WK Kellogg also has, so not sure how that works). Everything else is crackers and bars and things like Eggo and Pop Tarts. There isn't much under the Kellanova umbrella that would make someone think of Kelloggs. https://www.kellanova.com/us/en/our-food.html

I wonder which are slow growth cereals and which are faster growth ones. Specifically, where does Smart Start land? I can't find it around here but saw it in Nashville so I bought 2 boxes to bring home. Similarly, other than H-Mart sometimes having them, I can't find King's Hawaiian large round breads but saw some in Nashville so I bought a couple to bring back.

Smart Start is in WK Kellogg

Nearly every grocery store in the South seems to have King's. Southerners love them some sugar bread.

Expand full comment

We have other King's products, just not the big round bread. I saw their pretzel bites for the first time in San diego and brought home a couple of containers. $6.99 for inferior pretzel bites. Never buying those agin.

Do you find that Nashville has a decent supply of Asian groceries?

Expand full comment

I didn't live there; just visited my kids there. I know of one large Ranch 99 (Ranch) type supermarket that has lots of stuff. I would assume there are smaller Asian markets.

I know in Louisville, there was 1 large supermaket and lots of smaller Asian/Korean/Vietnamese markets. There is a large Vietnamese community there which were refugees after the war.

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

Why do people always try to have their cake and eat it too? Why doesn’t anyone try to have their pie and eat it too? Or what would be wrong with this: he tried to have his burrito and eat it too?

This came up when I searched for "You can't have your cake and Edith too" which I thought I had heard before.

The first recorded instance of this was written by the Thomas Howard, the Third Duke of Howard to Henry XIII's close advisor Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell was a rival and enemy of Howard. Thomas Howard was a deal maker - essentially selling off his three nieces to Henry the Eighth, Mary Boleyn became his mistress, Anne Boleyn became his wife until Henry had her beheaded. The third niece also married Henry, but also was beheaded by Henry. Cromwell was later beheaded by Henry XIII, partly because Cromwell had undersold how ugly his wife Anne of Cleves. Cromwell was beheaded. Howard's son fell out of disfavor with Henry due to being on the Catholic side of Reformation, so Henry confiscated everything of the whole family and scheduled Howard and his son to be beheaded. The son was beheaded, but Henry died before Howard could be executed. Howard remained in the Tower of London through the entire reign of Edward VI (six years), but was later released by Queen Mary because she was Catholic. Anne of Cleves accepted an annulment and banishment without a consummation of her marriage, keeping her head.

Do you have a more problems with jet lag going east-to-west - or west-to-east?

Expand full comment

For me, it's different international vs domestic (I think).

Internationally, east-to west is "easy" and the reverse is a pain.

For me, "to Japan" is: get on a plane at noon, land at 3pm, spend a couple of hours getting to a place to sleep, eat dinner, stay up a bit, and sleep.

On the return, it's: get on a plane at 6pm, land at 10am, get home around noon...and then DON'T SLEEP!

my first trip to Europe was like that. Landed at around 8am and had to somehow stay awake for 12 more hours. Tough!

Expand full comment

Depends on which way has long layovers vs a more direct flight. And which way required getting up at o-dark-thirty for a ridiculously early flight, or after a long layover/transfer arrived very late/early the next morning. Sleep deprivation tends to be a bad thing in general, and especially when traveling.

Expand full comment

Traveling east to west, no problem. I go to Japan few times a year and never have issues with jet lag. I would go to bed around midnight and wake up around 5am the first two days but after third day usually I can sleep til 7 or 8am. But when I com back to US, I have jetlag for 3 weeks.

I travel to Europe once in a while, and have more issues with jetlag over there than when I com back, so it definitely has to do with East West.

I have more problems with jet lag going from west-to-east, hands down. I know this because if I pay attention to the clock, I will wake up and stay up on less sleep and drag throughout the day, crashing sooner. It takes me at least two days to fully acclimate to the shift.

Last June, I went to New Jersey for a memorial service. I was in New Jersey for three days. Just as I was acclimated, I returned home to the Bay Area.

Adjusting going east-to-west is easy by comparison, because I crashed sooner and got the sleep I needed while waking up earlier than usual, but adjusting towards my usual schedule.

I did wrestling for one season in 7th grade at Stanley Intermediate. Nobody explained the rules or any techniques. To me, it seemed to me like Fight Club for adolescents. I was bewildered when I lost my first match because I didn't know not to get pinned.

I did football for the tryouts in like 6th grade, wresting in HS for one practice, club volleyball at Cal for one practice (do laps and then dive onto the floor? no thanks!)

I did wrestling for a year in high school. My school was a mid tier wrestling power (more guys came out for wrestling than football) but oddly enough I slotted into a weight class where we only had 1 other guy whereas we had 4-6 for almost every other weight class. So I got pummeled on the JV mats as I was the default choice because a) I had no idea what I was doing and b) I had the exact wrong body type. 6'2 and 140 lbs does not a good wrestler make.

Former NBA player Royce White wins GOP primary for US Senate and to face off against Klobuchar. White has unpaid child support, illegally spent $1,200 at a strip club last time he lost an election, refused to travel on the road after he was drafted blaming mental health issues, has doubled down in saying that women are too mouthy, and is a devotee of Alex Jones and Steve Bannon. White is polling much better than his predecessor, trailing Klobuchar by 11 points, whereas past GOP candidates lost by 24 and 35 points.

Trump on defensive?

i read somewhere that even FL is getting close to being an even race (or close the the margin of error of the polls) despite the fact there are more registered Republicans in the state ...

Expand full comment

I know a lot of folks find Nate Silver annoying, but his election modeling is still the best IMO. He shows Florida within 5 points. So yeah, in the margin of error but not as close as most other battleground states.

https://www.natesilver.net/p/nate-silver-2024-president-election-polls-model

So basically, if Harris wins Florida it probably means this thing is a blowout elsewhere.

Another interesting thing about this model is that it suggests the Dems' popular-vote disadvantage in the Electoral College has almost vanished. Pennsylvania is the tipping-point state and is very close to the national polling (like only 0.5% of difference).

It's a nice story, but I wonder how that runner qualified for the marathon?

Each country can send a maximum of three women and three men to the Olympic marathon – but no country is guaranteed three spots. Countries can “unlock” their Olympic spots if athletes achieve one of the following:

•Run a fast enough qualifying time (two hours, eight minutes and 10 seconds for men, 2:26:50 for women).

•Place in the top five at a World Athletics platinum-level race.

•Reach a ranking high enough in the World Athletics ranking system.•

A’s topple Mets, win 9-4

Oakland officially passed last year’s squad’s win totals this afternoon when they beat the New York Mets in the first of three at Citi Field, cruising to a comfortable 9-4 win.

Bats come out hot against former teammate

The A’s came out of the gate hot, scoring the game’s first three runs in the very first inning. Facing former A’s All-Star Paul Blackburn, Oakland loaded the bases with two outs to bring up Seth Brown, and he made his former teammate pay with a bases-clearing double

The San Francisco Giants went into this week facing a make-or-break series with the Atlanta Braves, holders of the National League’s last wild-card spot. After two straight 10th-inning losses, it’s looking more like “break.”

Travis D’Arnaud singled off Casey Schmitt’s glove in the top of the 10th inning to score former Giant Luke Williams, ghost-running at second base. The Giants once again couldn’t answer in their half of the inning as they lost to Atlanta, 4-3.

Good things happen in fours in Dodgers’ win over Brewers

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/13/24219674/dodgers-home-runs-gavin-stone-landon-knack-brewers

Four Dodgers hit home runs to back Gavin Stone’s best start in over six weeks, and the team only used two pitchers to beat the Brewers 7-2 on Tuesday night in Milwaukee for their fifth consecutive win.

Stone had a 6.91 ERA in six starts since his shutout on June 26 in Chicago. Home runs were the bugaboo during that stretch, allowing eight long balls in just 27⅓ innings after only six home runs in his first 89 frames this season.
