The Ralliedae family is commonly lumped in with ducks (Anatidae) because they superficially look like them and are not that far removed from them in terms of evolution. The Ralliedae family includes crakes, coots, rails, and gallinules. They are usually water-loving birds. Here we see a coot, which has lobate toes. Grebes also have lobate toes.
Took my nephews and niece to the Rady Shell in San Diego Friday night for The Princess Bride movie, accompanied by the SD Symphony. A great time, as the movie remains a family favorite. Brought a Peach Apple Crumb pie from the Julian Pie company back home to Santa Barbara and had it for dessert with my weekly dinner crew. Also watched Trey Lance very much look the part in his first preseason start...kid is going to be a star.
Spent some time in North Cascades National Park. The good news is that there are still glaciers. From a botanical perspective it's interesting that the west entrance has Douglas fir, Cedar, Hemlock and other rainforest species, whilst the eastern side has Ponderosa and lodgepole pine like you see in drier montaine environments.
Had a great day of riding Mountain Bikes at Northstar Saturday that unfortunately ended in a crash. Nothing serious. A laps of focus on a jump. Some good trail rash but most concerning is my shoulder is pretty messed up. Hopefully nothing too long term and I have a lot more range of motion today than I did yesterday. I still managed to do some lake paddling with my 6-year old yesterday.
I got an Epic pass for this season. We'll see how many times I actually make it up. HSB said he'd schedule a trip out again this winter, depending on what new job he gets. Will probably go up at least one with No 3, and try to get the others to go as well.
Spent Saturday weeding and Sunday cooking. My doctor told me to stop eating like an average American, so I've started a new diet. I think the best thing I cooked was a riced cauliflower with roasted garlic and slow-cooked sofrito mixed in. However, it was a ton of work for a humble side dish. People who aren't on diets only scooped a courtesy tablespoon on their plate, but I chowed down on it.
Spent the last 5 days driving cross country to Nashville. Took 1 day longer because we went to a Rockies game Fri night and Dodgers Royals Sat night.
Food:
Q39 BBQ in Kansas City. Recommended by a friend as the best BBQ he's ever had. Their Rib Tips were amazing, better than the place in Ft Worth we went to for the TCU game. Did cause us to not get to the Dodgers game until top 2nd.
They didn't say Tommy John but mlb network just reported Walker Buehler to have season ending elbow surgery. Presumably some other problem that requires surgery.
He has some sort of tendon issue but the MRI isn't conclusive so the TJ doctor suggested exploratory surgery. Back in May or June, he had bone spurs removed.
He had TJ right after getting drafted by the Dodgers (the Dodgers knew he needed it but still picked him).
I feel that he will be forgiven eventually. He has built up so much charisma over the years. It's quite a surprise since he stared out his career with multiple legal issues.
Very frustrating tie for Leeds, they were up 2-0 at the 60' mark, but then they let Southamton tie the game 2-2. My son thought the announcers were morons, because they kept on talking about how hot it was in England - woup, big deal it was 90, so what, just play.
Oh come on, you've lived in England, how often did it get to 90 when you were there? They're not used to sustained high temperatures like that and their buildings aren't set up for it either.
Heh, even funnier, I was in the warm part of England, people there weren't surprised by 70' in summer on some days, and in winter it hardly ever snowed at all.
every so often I have to remind myself of that. I apologize if I mentioned this already but my cousin and her family visited a couple of weeks ago en route to the Outer Banks; her son went outside at like 0730 the first day they were here and immediately came back inside saying "it's too hot out there." My daughter and I were like "oh buddy you're in trouble," and he was so completely unable to cope with the heat that they left for the beach a day early.
Former Cal quarterback Chase Garbers did all that he could in his limited opportunity for the Raiders in Las Vegas’ 26-20 preseason victory over the Vikings on Sunday, and he has been impressive in both preseason games. But will he still be on the Raiders’ roster a week from now?
Meanwhile, ex-Golden Bears defensive back Camryn Bynum was a starting safety for the Vikings on Sunday, but we’ll start with Garbers’ performance.
Garbers is the No. 4 quarterback on the Raiders’ depth chart, and they are unlikely to keep more than three quarterbacks and may keep only two. So he must make every preseason play a good one. And he did just that Sunday.
Ignition! Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory created nuclear fission in the lab last August and its research over the last year concluded that it worked. However, controllable fusion is still a perpetual 50 years away.
Uh, Not Good, seems to have happened in more than a few states:
Eight months after the 2020 presidential election, Robin Hawthorne did not expect anyone to ask for her township’s voting machines.
The election had gone smoothly, she said, just as others had that she had overseen for 17 years as the Rutland Charter Township clerk in rural western Michigan. But now a sheriff’s deputy and investigator were in her office, asking her about her township’s three vote tabulators, suggesting that they somehow had been programmed with a microchip to shift votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden and asking her to hand one over for inspection.
Michigan is definitely bringing the crazy in this area, but it's mostly a new variation on an old tradition as far as I can tell. Big "militia" state in the 90s and largest Klan presence outside of the old Confederacy back in the day.
A podcast about the supposed CIA writing the Scorpions Wind of Change and its effects on the Cold War. No 2 had heard episode 1 and suggested we listen to it on the drive (8 episodes). It was really good. I won't spoil it for those that might be interested, but if you're a Scorpions or Cold War fan, I'd highly recommend it.
Thirteen Lives on Prime was awesome, moving and engaging throughout. All the actors gave impressive performances, especially Colin Farrell and Vigo Mortensen. 19/19
West of the West, also on Prime, but is $1 per episode is a three part docu-sieres that showcases unique stories from California's Channel Islands. If you are at all interested in California history and want to learn a lot about some of the most beautiful islands just off the CA coast I can't recommend this series enough. 20/19 and worth every penny.
Halfway through the new A League of Their Own series on Amazon. I think they filmed some of it in Pittsburgh. While I enjoyed the show thus far, I do find its pacing to be rather slow at times (not to mention not nearly enough baseball). Also, with the number of cliches (AKA other players on the team), I would have thought that the show would give them more to do than concentrating so much on two main parallel storylines. The reviews on Amazon has been kind of hush by users, but a lot of people are trashing it for being too woke. I'll wait for a final judgement when I'm done with first season.
Saw Bodies Bodies Bodies on Friday, a thriller-comedy about a group of early 20-somethings that keep dying while stuck in a house together. It's themed on Werewolf/Mafia and handles accusations well, but the big twist is guessable pretty early on. It's a movie very much marketed at Gen Z, but it also condescends to them in a number of places. The movie's greatest strength almost works against it, in that it so accurately captures the dynamic of a bad friend group that's known each other for so long they all share simmering hatred for one another that I found it deeply uncomfortable to watch a lot of the time. 11/19.
Ugg - watched a movie my daughter requested: Dodge City - 10/19 Western, 1939, directed by Curtiz, (generally pretty good, but abusive to actors) and staring Errol Flynn - and weirdly it's my fault she requested this film. A long time ago we watched Captain Blood (Flynn's first American picture) and she liked this film when she was I think 8 years old, so I added more films with him: Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk - ones I knew were good, and then picked Dodge City, which I hadn't seen, and established a ton of cliches in westerns, and visually, some scenes are well directed, BUT there's a giant fucking annoying depiction of the Civil War as just some random fight and Flynn's character and the "good guys" fought for the Confederacy.
Rather annoying, and kind of goofy at the same time - and the romance kinda sucks as well.
looks like it was only (!) 2 starters lost to ACL injuries. The 3rd is out 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain...that likely limits him for the season though. A starting DL also got injured in practice Friday and is out 4-6 weeks. Torre Becton...doin work?
Notre Dame has named true sophomore Tyler Buchner as starting QB. Tyler is Eurasian and his mom's maiden name is Lam, which hints that she's Cantonese.
Tyler's sister is a junior beach volleyball player at Cal.
A few of mine are kind of funky because of blood blisters I've had under the nails from distance running. Nothing painful or that affects function, just some of them look kind of messed up.
Trying not to think about toes at the moment. At a hotel in SEA and when leaving yesterday morn (in sandals), as the door was closing, the Do Not Disturb sign fell off the handle. I turned around to fix it and the (fast-swinging auto-closer) door swung and closed over a couple of my toes (middle and ring.)
Felt like the skin had been sheared off. Was afraid to look. But just hurt for about a minute. Then started bleeding. Bandaged them up for the day. When I took them off (bandages, not toes), there's some missing skin and a lot of bruising under the toenail. But better than I thought it'd be...
Crisis averted! Altho it wasn't pleasant when my daughter rolled a shopping cart over said toes in the pm. :-/
I hate toes injuries and I find I get them regularly. Probably because I wear sandals a lot. Just last week I was water some potted plants in the backyard and kicked an iron plant holder with a full stride with my baby toe. Just like your injury it hurt like hell and I was too scared to look initially because I knew it'd be bad. Thankfully nothing was broken and I just took a pea-sized piece of skin off the toe.
when in Japan last month, went to an onsen. and when I was finishing my post-soak shower, I dropped the water bucket on my big toe. 6 weeks later, I still have a big bruise under the toenail.
At least didn't think I'd lost the toe with that one!

A solid weekend all around.

Chase Garbers. Mostly handed the ball off in mop up duty.
He is at his best when handing the ball off, it is a strength of his.
QB Chase Garbers Impressive in Limited Playing Time for Raiders

Taken with a massive grain of salt. He’s the Cal beat writer so what else is gonna say about Garbers?
To be fair, he completed 2 passes and a third hit the receiver in the numbers but he dropped it.
So you're saying there's a chance...
I hope he beats out Mullens. Needs to get a chance.
