I was surprised to see that yesterday there was no mention in DBD that it was National Waffle Day. Mid-summer doesn't seem like the optimal time for it, but its never a bad day for a good waffle.

Game #125: A’s avoid sweep, beat Marlins 3-2 in finale

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2022/8/24/23320212/game-125-as-avoid-sweep-marlins-finale

Oakland won the series finale against the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon, beating Miami 3-2 in extras on the strength of the starting pitching.

It was a great matchup between a couple left-handed starters as both matched each other inning for inning for most of the game. Oakland broke through first for a couple runs but Miami charged back to tie it late and send it to extras. The A’s won it in the bottom of the 10th to make sure there would be no home sweep.

Anyone who tuned into this game was treated to a fantastic pitching duel through the first six innings.

Giants ruin breakfast

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/8/24/23320348/giants-tigers-recap-logan-webb

There are few things in this world that I love more than breakfast baseball. Pour a cup of coffee. Flip your eggs. Do the crossword. Pour another cup of coffee, you sludge-loving heathen. Turn on the San Francisco Giants game.

But breakfast, while beautiful, can sometimes be ruined. Sometimes all you want is a parfait, and it’s only after you’ve cut the fruit and put the granola in the wine glass (oh you think you’re so fancy) that you realize the yogurt is moldy. Sometimes you make a hot cup of coffee and then remember it’s 105 degrees out. Sometimes the waffles just don’t come out quite right.

Breakfast was bad for the Giants.

Dodgers get double-digit runs from the offense, double-digit strikeouts from Andrew Heaney

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/24/23321170/dodgers-offense-austin-barnes-andrew-heaney-strikeouts-brewers

Over 162 games in a normal regular season, even the best teams in the sport will have particularly off nights, which will be more deflating than your typical loss. The important fact is what you do in between them and subsequently how often they occur.

Wednesday was not an off night for the Dodgers, who creamed the Brewers 12-6 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score might appear.

Seldom in 2022 have we seen back-to-back disappointing games from the Dodgers, even more so during this run over the last month, mont and a half. With that in mind, go back in time to the end of Monday’s deflating shutout loss at the hands of Eric Lauer (always him, am I right), and the Milwaukee’s bullpen, and write up a checklist of the ideal end to this series.

Some will quibble with some of the ratings and weightings, and some of the exclusions, but

Student loans

Expand full comment

Timely, as there was an interesting discussion about this in today's NYT daily newsletter. (Is there a link to these?...I can't find one.)

The gist was that loan forgiveness is a giveback to wealthier folks (largely white and Asian), since they are more likely to go to and graduate from college. And since college grads make more money, it's giving money back to those investing in the future earnings.

As one who did college in the 80s – starting at DVC (community college), which was free the first semester and then went up to $50 per semester thereafter, and then Cal, which was like $1,500/year back then (housing, books, etc. costs not included) – my costs were low-ish, so I didn't have any debt. I also did a semester internship, which made me enough money to pay for the last year's tuition and housing.

I know it's not the same now, and more people are affected by student debt. But the article notes Biden's plan includes an income cap (which pushes the debt forgiveness more to poorer families). This naturally helps increase the share of debt forgiveness to Black borrowers, which could help with our historical imbalances.

Expand full comment

i was lucky enough to go to Cal long enough ago that is was super cheap. i had a little bit of scholarship money that paid most of it and the parents took care of the rest.

graduate school in the sciences was the typical trade-labor-for-degree deal. there were plenty of grants and aid, just lucky not to have any loans.

when i see young(er) people in the workforce these days and one of their biggest financial burdens are student loans, i realize how fortunate i was in being able to start saving early and they most people are not in the situation

Expand full comment

agreed...my 1989 Cal degree (following DVC) was relatively inexpensive. But (following up with my reference to the NYT article today), were you to have had debt, would it have hamstrung you? reading your posts (and others here) over the last few years, your Cal education seems to have got you into a well-paying career. So the debt would have been manageable?

You don't have to answer if it's too personal, but I'm just curious about data points related to whether the "us"-es of the world are hit by this problem.

Expand full comment

Good point. Tuition was cheap when I was there. When I was 20 I was able to fund two years of tuition from my summer earnings working on a salmon fishing boat in Alaska.

I am not Asian but with help of random family members and work study jobs I got through undergrad with no debt. It was pretty interesting working those jobs, to see others’ situations. I remember one of my co-workers at the ASUC was working three jobs simultaneously. I don’t know how she made time for school, was nuts.

Expand full comment

I also graduated undergrad without debt. All of mine came from law school.

Expand full comment

Eldest had about $30K from undergrad, had paid a good chunk of it (over minimum payments for a couple years) and this forgiveness will take most of the rest. Now she's going to have about $60K more for MBA. bleh.

Expand full comment

I had to take out about $100k for law school but paid it back. I don’t disagree with the loan forgiveness stuff right now necessarily but it seems a bit random and kind of a one off band aid. What they really need to do is allow student loans to be dischargeable in BK, and to address the cost of school going forward for Gen Z and beyond. I think you have to use threats of taxes to force schools to lower costs, particularly schools with sizeable endowments. It is kind of crazy that anyone should have to pay tuition to go to Stanford for example given the size of their endowment. It’s obscene.

Expand full comment

Many of the elite private schools do offer need based financial aide. When No 1 was going through it in 2012, Furd covered everything (room & board & tuition & I think books) for family incomes below 65K and free tuition for family incomes below 100K (and prorated above). I think Princetown and Georgetown were 125K. I think the Ivys + elite privates do something similar and the amounts have gone up over the years. I know that for No 2, Vandy covered the majority and over 4 years it's only been a total of maybe 25-30K.

So they do offer a lot of money for low to middle class. Others like Carnegie Mellon only do partial (unfortunately for No 2).

Expand full comment

Yes although I think the reason they started doing that was because the feds were making noise about pulling their non profit tax status

Expand full comment

Yup. I remember those rumblings.

Expand full comment

The private school endowment size race is about as big as the NCAA football arms race.

Expand full comment

there's also an argument to be made for cutting off schools that have especially high default rates

Expand full comment

absolutely there needs to be some reform of the costs for higher education. A good start would be for CA to fund the UC and CSU systems to the same level they did in the 70s and 80s.

Expand full comment

what is the cause of the increases? Prop 13 screwed public schools, but is the UC/CSU system funded by property taxes? Or is it just different (poor) priorities on the part of the state gov't?

90% the state just cut the amount in the 90's, but never brought it up again when they had more $$$$ like they do now.

Expand full comment

Yes agree. I do like Biden’s free community college thing. You do that 2 years and then finish up at UC, you can get by on little debt

Expand full comment

In addition to transferring and graduating with little to no debt by starting at a community college, it also allows young adults the time to mature so that they can take 4-year seriously and perhaps have a better idea of what they'd like to study. Also, many CCs offer 2-year degrees and certificates for those who don't necessarily want to get a 4-year degree.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/where-should-the-big-ten-expand-next-we-crunched-the-numbers/

The top fit score belongs to Cal with 87 points. It checks pretty much every box as a flagship state school and AAU member with a large enrollment and very good academics; it even does OK in the rivalries category because of its long tenure of matchups against UCLA and USC.

Aug 25, 2022·edited Aug 25, 2022

It's more middle of the pack if you scroll down. It does weight football success and to a lesser success mbb more than the other sports. Truth is if we had a semi-functional mbb program to help our overall national brand, I think our case would be far less fringe-y. But Knowlton defaulted on the program waiting for all that free Pac-12 TV rights money that now will never come. And now we have a lousy product at a time when we most need a good one to make the strongest case to the B1G.

Expand full comment

so is the market score, and to be honest - based on years of reading CGB and W4C - I'm inclined to believe it.

Expand full comment

Not sure how much I buy that market score. It relies on a lot of assumptions from TV ratings that don't include Pac-12 Network games (thanks Larry Scott) and a New York Times map of college fandom done in 2014 (that would have been about the worst time to measure that for Cal).

I'm not saying Cal and Stanford are amazing at delivering TV ratings or anything, but having them that low while sitting in a dense, wealthy market is dubious.

Expand full comment

I would say that Cal does get ratings and support when we give people a reason to care, it's just far to infrequent and even more rarely seldomly sustained. There's too much competition locally for the entertainment to earn blind loyalty (except for the Raiders). This separates us from Stanford. Locally no one cares about Stanford even when they are good. But when Cal is good, there is interest.

Expand full comment

That's also my sense. Cal has a high(ish) ceiling, but we don't hit it all that often. The time period since 2014 would be a particularly bad one for measuring this.

Expand full comment

Yeah the concept that we deliver the Bay Area market seems dubious. Not quite as bad as the concept that Rutgers delivers the NYC market, but in that general vicinity of badness. I just don’t think the Bay Area is that great of a college football market or even sports market generally. People’s interests are quite disparate.

Expand full comment

It's a pro market almost exclusively. Rutgers delivering NYC is laughable.
