Game two of the three game series between the Athletics and the Detroit Tigers took place tonight at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Starting the game for the A’s was Osvaldo Bido, who went up against the wily veteran Charlie Morton for the Tigers. While not specifically calling Bido an “opener,” skipper Mark Kotsay did not expect him to go deep into the game.
When the sun rose on Tuesday morning and we all groggily crawled from our beds, the San Francisco Giants had a 0.4% chance of making the postseason, as gauged by the computers at Fangraphs HQ. And, after beating the Chicago Cubs 5-2 after the sun had set, that number surely rose.
A little. From a tiny number to a still tiny number.
Went to the game! Interesting to see Verlander in this stage of his career - throws a ton of offspeed stuff now, a big change from his fireballing past
Clayton Kershaw turned back time Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds, while a four-run sixth inning helped the Dodgers take the middle match of this three game set by a final score of 6-3.
The Reds attacked immediately against Kershaw, as Spencer Steer led of the game with a double before Elly De La Cruz singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Miguel Andujar drove in the game’s first run on a groundout, but the Reds wouldn’t reach base against Kershaw for the rest of the night.
Coming off of a pair of season-opening road wins, the 17th-ranked California men's soccer team (2-0) returns to the cozy confines of Edwards Stadium for its first two home games of the season, starting with a Thursday tilt against San Francisco followed by a Sunday match against UC San Diego.
Travers Family Head Coach Justin Wilcox announced Tuesday that Cade Uluave will serve as the team's season captain for the 2025 campaign. The Golden Bears' junior inside linebacker will be in the role for the first time. He was a game captain for Cal's contest against Miami in 2024.
"It's a blessing and a cool opportunity to be named the captain," Uluave said."It puts me in a role to be a leader on the team. I want to be a resource and someone that everyone can turn to."
The California football team will meet former conference foe, Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon, for the 2025 season opener. The Golden Bears and the Beavers will kick off at Reser Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT, with the game set to be aired live on ESPN. It will be the 88th all-time meeting between the two programs on the gridiron and the 30th consecutive.
California men's soccer forward Luka Lukic was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday, after scoring three goals in his first two games as a Golden Bear. One of those goals came in Cal's 1-0 win over UCLA on Sunday, when the 6-3 Lukic headed in the gamewinner in the final minute of the game.
After suffering its first loss of the season at home Sunday, the California women's soccer team (2-1-1) is back on the road this Thursday at Utah Valley before returning to Edwards Stadium to host Arizona on Sunday.
The Wolverines (1-1) had a strong showing during the first week of the season defeating Utah at home 2-0 before narrowly losing to No. 23 Kansas 3-2 on the road. The Wildcats (3-0) head into the week undefeated and have yet to allow a goal this season. It will be Arizona and Cal's first meeting since 2023 when the two programs were members of the Pac-12
Transportation Department/USDOT announces takeover of Union Station in DC. Interesting that Wapo first reported news from Dept of Defense. Wonder which is truly driving this.
What's driving this? It's like 1.7 miles from the White House. My take is that they can cosplay tough-on-crime in a visible spot and, if they're lucky, get a chance to beat up POC.
I wonder if it's the consequence of trying not to offend anyone that defines Cal's administration as hating everyone.
Realistically, the objectively safe haven and strongest ground on which to stand *should be* in full support of academic integrity and academic freedom. Free speech should evolve from that stance. Equal treatment of all people, all groups should evolve from that stance. No hate and the possibility of friendship should evolve from that stance. That also means you reject accusations of favoritism, hostility, and prejudice as antithetical to academic integrity and academic freedom, and free expression (free speech).
Then the administration should be more vigorous and forceful in defense of its actions. Part of that is public relations. In these times, you cannot let public appearances stand alone. Indeed, universities across the United States are cowering when they should be standing and fighting.
If they don't take a stand now, it will be harder later when there will be more pressure to cave.
I don't even see anything in this article that the school is actually DOING to be hostile to Muslims. There's a description of one incident of a random student harassing someone with a headscarf. Is the claim that the university encourages such behavior? How?

rare NYC baseball occurrence.
both Yankees (100p) and Mets (700p) have home games today.
plus there are a zillion people at the US Open which is right next to Citi Field.
LETS GO METS
after giving up 5-3 lead to Phillies late in the game, Mets get 4 straight base hits in the bottom of the 9th to win it, 6-5.
this would have been a good one to go to. Mets now 5 back of the Phillies w/ last game of series tonight.
And they're 3.5 games up in the last wild card spot. Cincy keeps losing to the Dodgers so they are losing ground to claim the last wild card spot.

My kids and I were saying the same thing about Kershaw. He's more of a finesse pitcher now. He's even finally picked up a split change.

Apparently, the government will figure out the cause of autism within two weeks.
I'm making a book on betting odds:

Muslim civil rights group designates UC Berkeley as a ‘hostile campus’

These are interesting times we live in.
Didn’t Chancellor Lyons testify before Congress because of hostility towards Jews on campus? Why do we hate everyone?
Do we, though?

I think the real answer is that Berkeley has always been a nice target for people to protest against, on both sides.
