Currently, where is a nearby place that you like to dine?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i need to think of a good one for date night w/ wife tonight.

there are plenty of standards in the Italian category near our house. Lusardi's is my favorite mostly because it is fancy enough to dress up and casual enough to let the kids wear sweats or PJs. and the food is FANTASTIC

MoriBear's avatar

I don't think that restaurant serves what they're advertising!

"Fusion" makes it sound like gentlemen might not be welcome ;-)

Sidebar: Japanese doesn't seem to really have a "proper" term for that. あそこ doesn't count. I've asked women what term doctors use, but never gotten a good answer. Maybe a lot of hand-waving occurs???

heyalumnigo's avatar

To me, a restaurant with Fusion in its name isn't authentic. It's like it's target audience is a white person that doesn't like authentic X food, but is willing to try watered down X fusion food.

MoriBear's avatar

not sure why I had Fusion twice (edited)

I was making a joke about fusioned "manko"s, which is something one might enjoy on the interwebs...

SGBear has posted the C-Word on our Family-Friendly little site here ;-)

Which I think violates their Terms and Conditions of "Anything is fine, so long as you’re generally civil."

Wiata78's avatar

What about Thai-Chinese (Thi-Chi) Fusion? Wasn't that a thing in the 1990s?

AndyPanda's avatar

There is a local small Mexican restaurant family and friends run that does mostly take out, but does have sit down. Good sized menu, bakery, great food, reasonable prices. Best refried beans we have found anywhere. Great Chile Releno is a specialty.

Colorado's defense going to keep them from winning lots of games this year.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Cal's offense is going to keep us from winning a lot games ... (if history holds true)

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

NDSU got screwed out of a play by the Colorado time keepers and officials that let the clock run for 5 seconds on the penultimate play. What a joke.

F Deion.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The announcers were showing Colorado's schedule and said the O/U for wins was 5.5 I think. And then saying, look at that schedule. I'm guessing they think 5.5 is too high. Looks like 4 ranked teams plus lots of good teams. The way their D was against NDSU, I think I agree.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I have no idea why you would schedule NDSU…seems like more bad than good comes from playing an FCS powerhouse like that…

The Bison are good enough to beat a lot of P4 teams.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I sure wouldn't want Cal playing them in the first game of the year.

ACC: Western Carolina was at #24 NC State, but the favored Wolfpack needed a big 4th quarter to come from behind to defeat the FCS Catamounts 38-21. Announcers kept calling out State's offensive play-calling and Grayson McCall's spotty accuracy. In the end, their superstar WR KC Concepcion bailed them out by catching 3 TDs on 9 receptions and 121 yards. NC State loves to run the jet sweep with Concepcion.

SGBear's avatar

NC State has a lot of weapons - Concepcion's electric quickness, a thunder and lightning RB duo, an athletic freak TE. But their O-line is vulnerable and the Catamount exposed them via a steady diet of blitzes. Their defense may be rusty due to early season issues, but their defense looked over-aggressive - making them vulnerable to counters, double moves, and scrambles.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Do we have any DBs that can guard Concepcion, or RJ Cleveland for SMU, or Ayomanor?

Fear these guys could have some Nelson Agholor-type days v Sirmon and Wilcox’s secondary

ACC: Minnesota and UNC try to outdo each other with bad offensive - or good defense if you're an optimist. UNC's woes came as they lost their starting QB Max Johnson in Q3, potentially for the whole season. Minnesota was behind by two with two seconds left at the UNC 29 and the home crowd going nuts. Minnesota kicker sent the kick wide and the home-team accidentally set off fireworks. UNC won the game 19-17 and has a stretch of cupcakes, but may have a long ACC season.

As a follow-up to the post from yesterday regarding whether we will continue to watch our former Pac-12 foes, what is your rooting approach when watching other ACC teams? I am having so much fun rooting against the rest of the conference (including UNC last night) even though it's not good for the conference as a whole? I had the opposite approach with the Pac-12, thinking that every non-conference win made the conference look better as a whole.

SuperGuy's avatar

I was rooting for ACC (continuing my approach to Pac12 nonconference games) and against Big10 (for spurning Cal). I’m also all-in on upsets against former Pac12 and will happily root for current Pac12 in non-Cal games. I never thought I’d root for a Mack Brown-led team, but the conference implications let me ignore that fact in real-time.

AndyPanda's avatar

The would be winning kick was wide right...after they had moved the ball to the right with the prior play...after the kicker had hit the right upright with an earlier failed FG attempt. Poor end of game positioning allowed yet another episode of Mack Brown escaping with a win, this one on the road. In Mack's defense, you have to at least be close for a freak error or event to bail you out, something a number of teams were no where close to being in position to benefit from.

a few more college visits coming up for HS senior. Lehigh in PA (sort of a longshot) and Roger Williams in RI, Boston Architectural College. they are applying only to schools w/ architecture programs and mostly in northeast

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

that is on this list of colleges to apply to. very much a longshot ...

in think Northeastern is among the most competitive schools in the country to get into because of the innovative work-study opportunities.

Drexel has an interesting 2+4 program where you take normal college classes for 2 years and then work+major classes the ast 4 yrs.

SGBear's avatar

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

yes some. but always willing to talk to people (in case you know people ...)

also, their HS has something of a vocational track and they will have taken 4 yrs of architecture courses by the time they graduate.

This season we finally get our wish. For as long as I can remember college football fans have been clamoring to have the team that was deemed 11th best at the end of the regular season to have a chance at the national title. But at the same time my heart bleeds for whoever is 13th best team. When, oh when will #13 get the same opportunity as number 1?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

in an even crueler twist of fate, they will skip 13 and go on to the 14th

Reds walk it off against A’s to avoid sweep

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/8/29/24231843/oakland-athletics-cincinnati-reds-lawrence-butler-jj-bleday-seth-brown

Despite a standout performances from a trio of B’s in Lawrence Butler, JJ Bleday, and Seth Brown, the Oakland A’s were stopped in heartbreaking fashion from sweeping the Cincinnati Reds.

Igniting a back-and-forth battle, Brownie and Butler contributed to three A’s runs in the first two innings of the game. The latter hit a two-run homer to score the freshly recalled Nick Allen that put Oakland up 3-0 on the Reds.

Dodgers group effort on offense beats Orioles

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/29/24232001/dodgers-offense-bullpen-orioles

Eight Dodgers starters got hits, and a four-run fourth inning was the difference in a 6-3 win over the Orioles on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, finishing off a 7-2 homestand against American League teams.

To understand how the result doesn’t match the game's rhythm, look no further than the hits total. Winning by three runs, the Dodgers out-hit the Orioles 14 to 4 and could’ve made this far easier.

it was exceptionally crowded. by 200p you could barely get a seat at any of the courts without waiting 10-15 min. we also had a friend whose kid was a ball boy on one of the smaller courts, so we got to see him in action.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I watched some of Alcaraz's match against the Aussie Li Tu. In the first set he looked like he was strugging. He ended up winning the next 3 sets. Also the crowd was seemed to be very much on Tu's side that first set.

https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/41049578/carlos-alcaraz-stunned-botic-van-de-zandschulp-us-open

he (Van de Zandschulp) is not someone most folks would have expected to pull off this sort of monumental upset. Consider: Van de Zandschulp was 11-18 for the season at the start of this week and hadn't won consecutive matches at a tour-level event in 2024 until now.

SGBear's avatar

That's a fine looking kick step. You're not gaining the edge advantage rushing against that guy.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Wilcox starts his eighth season tomorrow. How many more do you think he's got?

a) this is it, he's done

b) two or three

c) another eight

SGBear's avatar

At least another eight after he wins the ACC Championship and gets a CFP invitation, despite inexplicably going winless against Wake Forest.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Would you accept being in the CFP conversation every year, but lose every year to Furd?

SGBear's avatar

Oh, no. I'm not falling for this monkey paw wish. If I say yes, then we lose every Big Game, never win ACC championship, be a CFP bubble team, and we never get selected, and then get blown out every bowl game by some rando G5 school.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm going to guess somewhere between b and c. If he can consistently win 7+ games in the ACC, then he'll stay around. Win 3 of 4 out of conference games and then 4 or 5 of 8 conference games. I think it's doable.

FiatSlug's avatar

Could be a, could be b. Hope springs eternal in a new year, in a new conference. But I think it will go wrong, and it is likely to be ugly.

Prove me wrong, Golden Bears!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I think either B or C. Problem is it will probably have to go VERY wrong for him to actually be let go…like back-to-back 3-win seasons? Don’t really see that happening…but I have serious doubts that Wilcox and his staff can coax a 9-10 win season out of his players..

Until proven otherwise, it’s looking like another Wilcox Special - 6-6, +/- 1, with a low level bowl in mid-Dec…tho hope springs eternal for that elusive Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl bid in El Paso…..

FiatSlug's avatar

Except for one thing - even Ray Willsey, Mr. Mediocre, was pushed out after a 6-5 season. From a historical perspective, I'm less than assured that Wilcox retains his job with another 6-6 record.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Really? Interesting…I figure a 6-6 season and a second consecutive bowl bid would probably get him another year…we shall see.

FiatSlug's avatar

Track the attendance. That's the critical barometer.

It’s time for Oski Disciple’s final question of the day.

Do people who are home schooled have class reunions? What are their yearbooks like? Are parent-teacher conferences just their mom talking to herself? Aren’t proms pretty boring?

Thus concludes our series. I would like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we've passed the audition. And oh by the way, Go Bears!

heyalumnigo's avatar

Would their class reunions just be Christmas?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

we have some closer friends that were homeschoolers. mostly of them were doing it to be dedicated full time to rock climbing, training, competing, traveling.

life is different than what i expected. almost all classes are online these days and they work in a self paced way. their social circles come from their sport.

to answers your questions as best as i can..

- the get invited to prom by other kids

- no reunions, no yearbooks, no conferences

AndyPanda's avatar

Sorry to see this end. I'm sure there are many more questions seemingly lacking a good answer to explore.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Wells Fargo employee found dead in cubicle four days after clocking in

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/08/30/wells-fargo-worker-dead-four-days/

Wiata78's avatar

Being left alone in an isolated cubicle can be worse than being left alone on a mountain top.

FiatSlug's avatar

Indeed. One imagines that the woman found dead in her cubicle had a heart attack or stroke or other medical emergency on Friday, which killed her. But what causes me to be puzzled is that NO ONE knew that she was there or that NO ONE had reason to visit her location in the course of their duties on a daily basis.

And how is it that no one wanted to know where she was on *Monday* if, in fact, she was scheduled to work and didn't show up? Or why didn't building security know that she hadn't clocked out or tagged out Friday afternoon/evening?

If I'm a manager, I start a top-to-bottom review of what happened, especially what happened on Monday, and how we make sure it doesn't happen again.

The mind boggles that something like this could have been missed as long as it was.

Scootie's avatar

FiatSlug's avatar

Scootie's avatar

She had a professional project-related job.

Scootie's avatar

Soooooo...it was someone on my team who found her. :( She was not on my team.

She kind of sat around the corner in an out of the way spot on her floor. She came in on Friday, attended her meetings, no red flags. Everyone went home for the weekend. Mondays are very lightly attended in the office, and I don't know if nobody else on her team was around, or if she was the only member of her team in that location or what, but when he came in on Tuesday he was all, what is that weird smell? Did the janitors not empty someone's lunch from last week and went looking around and found her. He didn't know her but is pretty freakin traumatized.

FiatSlug's avatar

That's terrible. My condolences to your team member. I can only imagine how terrible it must have been.
