If you're Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, Christman is when you say it is, apparently. Even if that is 2 months and 24 days before the rest of Christendom (excepting the Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox churches, who observe Christmas on January 7).
it one of those NYT crossword tricks .. only 5 letters, pac12 doesnt work because there are other conflicting clues that have numbers but not the same or matching ones.
i had to give up and see what numbers they wanted ..
So, because I have a NYT subscription (for the moment), I looked up the Crossword archive for Sunday, September 1. Above the puzzle is this note - Each square in the shaded areas is to be filled with a numerical digit.
The last two squares of 37 across are shaded. Therefore, they need numerical digits.
Fly Thursday. Spend time in Atlanta mostly solo on Friday and Sunday but down to meet other Cal fans. Saturday I might drive solo with a rental car but open to carpooling with others, let me know!!
Auburn is doing a white out on Saturday. Their primary color is dark blue, so I think I think I'll wear either a gold shirt or an intentionally lighter blue
OD - you're in charge. We've left emergency phone numbers on the fridge. There a Pizza Rolls in the garage freezer or you can order UberEats. No parties at our houses while we're gone. Don't forget to feed the pets once per day. Call if you need us, but otherwise we'll be up to no good in Auburn.
Be prepared for rain. Right now rain is forecasted for thurs and Fri in both Auburn and Atlanta. SE forecasts move around all the time, even a day ahead/day of, so worth being ready on Sat. One good weather item- humidity is down a lot this week, may get lucky on Sat (but note just less humid, not no humidity).
I do not pay attention to any weather forecasts for the southeast that is more than 48 hours away. Could rain and be unseasonably cool. Could be nice. Could be hot soup.
Same- it was really hard for me to adjust to the unpredictability from the uber-predictable CA weather, particularly re no rain for months vs rain almost any time, even if just for 30 minutes. That and the adjustment of summertime thinking to no I do NOT want to do something fun outdoorsy from 2-4p when the whether looks nice out (as it does not FEEL nice out!).
Took it easy. Watched the Dodgers beat the Dbacks. Shot some hoops and hit some fly balls to No 2 until he pulled something after about 5 min. Made burgers.
Spent Saturday watching football, including watching the Bears in a bar. Sunday was spent studying. Monday was chores. Wife has Covid, so I'm doing more chores than normal.
a short 2 day hiking and backpacking trip w/ 17 yr old in western MA.
i had been to Sage's Ravine once 10+ yrs ago w/ the older child, so it was fun to go back. we have a nice 10 mi hike over 2 days. it was not really hard, but it was hard enough with the weight of the backpacks and the humidity.
we ran into a group of freshman from Williams College that were on a pre-college-starting camping trip. that was nice to the child to have some company at the campsite that was more their age.
we hiked over Bear Mt in CT which is the tallest mountain in Connecticut that is entirely within the state
> the highest point in Connecticut is on the southern slope of Mount Frissell, which is on the Massachusetts side of the Connecticut-Massachusetts border
my sleeping pad leaked air slowly and i was basically sleeping on the ground all night. that was less than ideal. at least it was not wet nor too cold.
I'm all for upsetting the status quo. It would be, by far, the biggest such upset this century if a steamfitter can beat an established politician in a race for a US Senate seat in any state. It would also be a warning shot to establishment pols in both major parties.
Where might one go for news on the 'other side'? My politically conservative friend (not a Trump voter, tho) was trying to get me to relax about a potential Trump 2nd term while I was attempting to convince him that with Atty General Kraken & Sec of State Rudy, the chances of a total collapse was > 50%. He (a lobbyist) looks purely at policy, and sees both pros & cons of a Trump presidency. He said I watch too much MSNBC. Where would I go to get a reasoned look at the republican side? Too much lying on Fox, so it'd have to be an outlet closer to the center than that clown show. Looking at the article headlines in today's National Review makes it look as cherry-pickingly bad as MSNBC is on the left. Where to turn?
2WAY is great, but I can't sit through multiple hour-long youtube sessions hoping the information I'm wanting pops up. Might be good for background while doing dishes though...
2WAY - YouTube. Usually a morning show/meeting every weekday and an evening one.
"2WAY is dedicated to offering a live, interactive, and independent platform, where free thinkers can access factual, comprehensive, and live unbiased views. Our inclusion of live content and political creators fosters an environment where diverse perspectives are celebrated, encouraging healthy, real-time discourse and informed decision-making. It’s not just one way, it’s two way."
I don't watch any forms of broadcast news, but feel like PBS News Hour was balanced at one point. They had guests such as David Brooks regularly featured, if I recall correctly.
Others with votes: #27 BC, #30 Memphis, #32 SMU, #33 Washington, #37 Auburn, #39 UNC. Some bozo gave Colorado a vote. Not receiving votes: Cal, Florida State
3rd week opponent SDSU beat FCS Texas A&M Commerce, coming from behind in the second half to win 45-14. Freshman Danny O'Neil had an okay game 22/33 214 yards 2 TDs and no INTs + 18 yards on 5 carries -- but it was Marquez Cooper (27 carries for 223 yards and 2 TDs) that won the game. TAMU-Commerce is terrible, so their next week match up against Oregon State should be the tell.
Super upset that I missed both the U$C v. LSU and BC v. FSU games because DirecTV and Disney could not reach a carriage agreement. The lights were shut off on all Disney-owned channels (including ABC, all ESPN channels and, for God's sake the National Geographic Channel) just as the U$C v. LSU game was about to kick off. Sucky timing since Monday Night Football (owned by ESPN) starts on Monday.
Ben Finley did *not* start for Akron against Ohio State as Tahj Bullock go the start, but he did get the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th series, 6th and part of the 7th before getting pulled. Finley's line was 8/14 for 53 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT, 7 carries for zero net yards.
Jeez. Even the scoreboard doesn't do it any justice. Auburn only had 46 offensive plays to gain 628 yards on offense. The highlights undoubtedly have some bias toward Auburn - but my goodness - this was utter domination. Look at any matchup anywhere on the field on any play and Auburn is winning.
In all honesty, I have no quibble with paragraph 4, other than the use of the word 'easy'. Cal, New Mexico, and Arkansas, even in down years, are legitimate programs, and no outcome is assured. Would love to see us make him eat his words, but Vegas thinks otherwise and is usually, unfortunately, pretty close to the mark.
FCS Abilene Christian had a heck of a day. Had a chance to win at regulation to upset FBS Texas Tech, but couldn't punch in a TD so they tied it with a FG. UCLA: J. Mike: 3 catchers for 36 yards. Mateen Bhaghani 3/3 including the game winner, but he didn't start because UCLA used Blake Glessner to tr to kick a 52 yarder and missed.
ACC: Georgia Tech put away bottom quartile FBS-level Georgia State 35-12. Well look at that, Georgia Tech is at the top of the ACC tables at 2-0, including 1-0 in conference.
ACC: Cuse overcomes a slow start to defeat Ohio 38-22, just missing the 17.5 point spread. To be fair, Ohio is not terrible - but we should still beat Cuse if we're healthy
ACC: L'ville smashed FCS Austin Peay 62-0. Austin Peay was a good program last year, going 9-3. L'ville QB Tyler Shough, who turns 25 in two weeks, played his senior high school year of football in 2017 and has already been married for over two years.
ACC: #19 Miami absolutely smashed Florida in the Swamp. The beatdown was so bad that Billy Napier's seat got warm. This was an impressive win and our chances of beating Miami look a little bit more distant. Also, I'm a little bummed that the series against Florida was cancelled because the Swamp looked really hostile and would have been amazing to visit.
BERKELEY – After helping lead the California volleyball team to a 3-0 start at the Rose City Showdown, Xuemeng (Maggie) Li and Annalea Maeder earned the ACC's first weekly award honors as Li was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Maeder was named ACC Setter of the Week.
NORTHRIDGE – Justin Knighton had a 19th birthday to remember.
The sophomore scored the game-winning goal – and his first collegiate goal – while Marco Brougher made four saves to earn the shutout in a 1-0 Cal men's soccer victory Sunday night at Cal State Northridge.
BERKELEY- Senior Karlie Lema earned her second brace of the season and junior Alex Klos scored her third straight game winner to lead the California women's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Cal State Bakersfield Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
The Golden Bears' third straight raised their record to 4-1-1 while the Roadrunners dropped to 1-4-0.
BERKELEY – Liz Klompmaker scored both goals – including the game-winner less than two minutes into sudden victory overtime – and the California field hockey team won its season opener on Sunday afternoon, defeating Michigan State 2-1 at Underhill Field.
PORTLAND – The California volleyball team extended its winning streak to 3-0 with a five-set win over San Francisco (22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11) and a sweep over host Portland State (25-23, 25-15, 25-23) to win the Rose City Showdown in Portland Saturday evening.
Crowdsourcing time. I'm driving through Atlanta on Friday. For those who have been there, anybody got any lunch suggestions? Or maybe some snacks to bring to Auburn?
Years ago was referred to Pattypat's Porch restaurant ("Atlanta's oldest independent restaurant since 1967??", now closed since the pandemic) for some authentic Dixie fare (this was back in the 80's when you still could), and told to order the ham. Rather than refrigerating it, they authentically cured & stored it in salt. Was completely inedible. My referring friend had a good laugh.
Ugh, sorry:( don’t think I know a single Atlantan that ever ate at Pittypat’s Porch- that place lived on conventioners that somehow heard to go there (from other out of towners?). As this is brutal honesty time, for people short on Atlanta time, don’t waste it at World of Coke- the current iteration is just one giant ad (though the round the world soda tasting is fun).
An article I read said it was mostly propped up by tourists (and probably Atlantans who sent their visiting relatives there as punishment). I was there on a short work assignment, so was pretty close to being a conventioneer...
Maybe there should be a separate road trip post for each of the away games, with lots of new places to visit this year? re food recs, couple for lunch: Iconic, diverse Atlanta (with a Bib Gourmand) is Busy Bee Cafe, classic soul food meat and three, near Clark Atlanta University (and not far from Spellman/Morehouse). In this crazy swing state election season, you may even run into a presidential candidate there. Staplehouse has some of the best quality food & highly rec'd sandwiches and is just a few blocks off of the interstate downtown (on Edgewood). Also not far off of interstate is the newly buzzing Summerhill neighborhood next to old Turner Field/Olympic Stadium/Now Georgia State football stadium. Tons of great restaurants there on Georgia Avenue, though some not open for lunch. Woods Chapel BBQ does lunch there on a great patio with boozy slushies, also How Crispy Express for wings or fried chicken sandwiches. If you are back this way on your way home/closer to dinner time, Little Bear (also Bib Gourmand) is excellent.
Or any ideas on things to see in ATL before we leave for Auburn. No 2 was there a couple of weeks ago and suggested the aquarium. He said he liked it better than Monterey. Disownment papers getting started...
Also- Braves in town this weekend, with a Sunday afternoon game. Steelers are at Falcons on Sunday at 1p, plan accordingly to attend or at minimum around the related traffic.
Oh Braves would be interesting. But not sure we'll have time. Flight is at 5:55, and airport is way on the other side, so probably won't have time. Not sure how bad Precheck is at ATL, but I have heard horror stories, and Auburn fans flying out. No 2 just came back but he flew out on Mon.
If tickets are cheap enough, maybe go for an hour just to check off Truist Park.
Aquarium is great. Only whale shark in captivity in the US. College Football Hall of Fame is a MUST. Coca Cola World is fun. You get to sample Coke products from all over the world. If you're there for lunch/dinner, I strongly recommend Mary Mac's Tea Room for some excellent fried chicken and something called a pot licker that you will love!
Pot Liquor! That was the best thing I took away from the Atlanta dining scene. Was in ATL on business years ago so very limited opportunity for touring, but agree that Coca Cola, Carter Museum, and Civil Rights Museum are must dos.
College Football Hall of Fame has more than one spot that highlights Cal- pretty cool. View of whale sharks from below is amazing, though the penguins and the Beluga whales are my favorites to watch (a little sadly - those Belugas are so human-like, will interact w/ the visitors, and shouldn't be in captivity). Also across from Aquarium is National Civil Rights Museum, which is great- even though lots of construction next to the building (it is expanding), it is open - save time for the top floor which is world civil rights, more stories I wasn't always familiar with. Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum is also great and not far off of the interstate with easy free parking. Recreation of his oval office plus loads on what he and Rosalynn did post presidency. His 100th birthday is this month, and there are various events planned to celebrate.
The Hotel Lorraine location for Memphis civil rights museum definitely gives it the extra punch of reality. The Atlanta museum infuses reality in its own way-- putting the headphones on at the Walgreens lunch counter is a must particularly for those of us who are white.
Dance Revolution: I've tried it once, but at the Louisville Science Center, not at an arcade. Not sure why they had one you could try to play. Didn't like it.
Collin Morikawa has the best week at the Tour Championship, but can’t overcome the lead Scheffler earned going in. Ends up in second for a $12.5 million payday.
They might need to tighten up the formula for the number of strokes they gift the top point getters. I'm guessing the odds of someone starting at even has about a 0.00% chance of catching Scotty Scheffler starting at -10.
After yesterday’s heartbreaking loss ended a 3-3 road trip for the Oakland Athletics, the 69-68 Seattle Mariners came to town for a three-game series at the Coliseum. Osvaldo Bido took the mound tonight against 27-year-old righty Logan Gilbert for Seattle.
J.P. Crawford walked to start the game. And after a Julio Rodríguez strike-out, Mariners backstop Cal Raleigh homered to get Seattle on the board.
Logan Webb sailed through the first four innings. He allowed just one base runner on a single up the middle with two outs in the 3rd. Miami had hit nothing but bowling balls, nine balls in play, eight ground outs. Webb struck out four and needed just 46 pitches to walk back to the dugout with a 2-0 lead going into the 5th.
MLB just needs to add 1 AL and 1 NL team so that there are an even number of teams in each league so all teams can play all weekends/holidays without requiring off days or interleague match-ups.
The Dodgers offense did a little bit of everything to back a strong start by Jack Flaherty, including two home runs by a well-rested Freddie Freeman to beat the Diamondbacks 11-6 on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field in Phoenix.
With the win, the Dodgers now lead Arizona by six games and clinched the season series over the D-backs by winning seven of 13. Should the two teams end the season with the same record, Los Angeles has the tiebreaker. But Arizona is now in third place in the division. The second-place Padres, winners on Monday in San Diego, trail the Dodgers by five games.
49ers Ricky Pearsall, their first round pick who already had shoulder problems holding him back, was shot by a mugger in Union Square on Geary, receiving a chest through-and-through wound that won't require surgery. He's been put on the reserve/non-football injury list and will be out at least four games.
I really enjoyed the first movie. I like zombie films. And I like unserious films. But this one wasn't good. It's got a few smirk-worthy lines and a Zoey Deutch nailed her role as airhead Madison, but I thought it was a waste of time. Worst of all, they besmirch the city of Berkeley by introducing a cartoonish antagonist from there.

Went to Mountain Winery to check out the "Lost 80s Live" concert (my wife loves 80s MTV bands). Fun time!

Lemme guess...you have a ThermaRest.
no. it was an REI branded "flash" sleeping pad. supposed to be ultralight (which it was). just didnt hold in any air for long periods
But it has a valve, does it not?
sort of. not a screw on valve like the Therm-a-rests do. you sort of "unplug and blow into a one-way valve type thing".
it was very easy to blow up. i guess it is not as airtight!
this is the more recent one which hopefully works better

ACC: Cuse overcomes a slow start to defeat Ohio 38-22, just missing the 17.5 point spread. To be fair, Ohio is not terrible - but we should still beat Cuse if we're healthy

ACC: L'ville smashed FCS Austin Peay 62-0. Austin Peay was a good program last year, going 9-3. L'ville QB Tyler Shough, who turns 25 in two weeks, played his senior high school year of football in 2017 and has already been married for over two years.

ACC: Virginia Tech - which was a dark-horse favorite by some to win the ACC - couldn't beat SEC doormat Vandy, losing 27-34.

Atlanta
I am sitting in How Crispy now. Loving their grub
Oh the Civil Rights museum would be cool as well. I went to the one in Memphis after the Ole Miss game and that was phenominal.

The regular season means something. As it should.
Poor Collin, figuratively
Darren Baker called up to the Nats. Singles on the first pitch he sees as a pinch hitter.
A’s take down Mariners 5-4 on walk-off Homer

After yesterday’s heartbreaking loss ended a 3-3 road trip for the Oakland Athletics, the 69-68 Seattle Mariners came to town for a three-game series at the Coliseum. Osvaldo Bido took the mound tonight against 27-year-old righty Logan Gilbert for Seattle.
J.P. Crawford walked to start the game. And after a Julio Rodríguez strike-out, Mariners backstop Cal Raleigh homered to get Seattle on the board.
The toughest play in baseball...for some reason (Giants lose to Marlins 7-5 on Sunday)
https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2024/9/1/24233893/mlb-final-giants-marlins-9-1-2024-recap-logan-webb-the-toughest-play-in-baseball-for-some-reason
Jacks are better, give Dodgers upper hand in National League West
https://www.truebluela.com/2024/9/2/24234215/freddie-freeman-home-runs-jack-flaherty-dodgers-diamondbacks

I'd want surgery anyway.

Zombieland 2: Double Tap (7/19, WNB)
I really enjoyed the first movie. I like zombie films. And I like unserious films. But this one wasn't good. It's got a few smirk-worthy lines and a Zoey Deutch nailed her role as airhead Madison, but I thought it was a waste of time. Worst of all, they besmirch the city of Berkeley by introducing a cartoonish antagonist from there.
