Charleston stands out for a number of things:

-Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, "the oldest continuous use Jewish worship" sanctuary in America

-The Francis Marion Hotel. Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" is recognized as a father of guerilla warfare, or a terrorist, depending on whose side one is on.

-shrimp and grits

No, but that sound neat. I've been to Charleston a few times already and have been to a few places where you pay to get in. If I remember correctly, it was the Nathaniel Russell House

and the other was some Confederate dude's house near Battery. I think it was the Williams Mansion, but my memory is a bit foggy on that one. I am doing a gospel service at a North Charleston Baptist church, so that should be interesting.

super fun town, great food, great history.

i have only been once, and that was relatively recently for a rather fancy wedding.

that friend owns a historic house in the nice part of town, so hopefully we'll have more chances to go down in the future.

interestingly, people seem to drive around town in golf carts. and because you dont need a drivers license, you see a lot of kids driving around town. i thought that was funny.

I have often thought about this and I suppose the answer depends on where you live and how hot or cold it gets. Take Phoenix for example, going without power in the winter would probably be fine but not having it in the summer would would be miserable and potentially life threatening.

Expand full comment

Agree. You can deal with the cold in a lot more ways than extreme heat without not only cooling, but probably also water.

We were going stir crazy for sure! We have a very small generator to charge phones, run the fridge a few hours a day and even and old portable DVD player with a small library. We have gas water heater, and gas stove top, so we were comfortable in that aspect. In 2021, we stayed warm with a wall furnace in our back unit, but the front of the house was in the mid-forties. We now have a wood burning insert and last year it was amazing during the outage we had (I think longest last year was 3 or 4 days). I'd rather be without power in the winter, it is so odd to not have power when it is warm out. Plus, those PSPSs tend to happen when the sky is choked out with smoke, so you are trapped inside with no power, which really sucks!

Expand full comment

5 day backpacking trip is the longest w/o electricity and that was actually on purpose!

we had a bad storm in NY once where i think power was out for 4-5 days. but we have one of those portable backup generators that plugs into an alternate subpanel in the house, so it didnt seem so bad.

3.5 days after the Atlanta ice storm (2000 Atlanta Super Bowl week). We were several hours from giving up on trying to keep warm in the house/moving to a hotel with power when the magic lights went on. It would be much harder to last that long during a July/Aug Atlanta power outage.

Expand full comment

I was out for a couple of days after the derecho storm in the DC area in summer 2012, but my house is built into a hill, so the lower levels were cool enough to sleep. I had friends who were out for 5 days & it was around 100F every day. Just ass.

Actually, I have been in a lost power situation for more than 48 hours. January 1982 when a mudslide took out transmission towers over the Santa Cruz Mtns. That was one consequence of a steady rainstorm that dumped 14 inches on the Santa Cruz Mtns. We also lost the aqueduct connecting Loch Lomond to Santa Cruz, restricting the water supply.

That was an El Nino winter.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has always been respectful of his upcoming opponent. Shanahan was once in the same shoes as Cardinals head coach Johnathan Gannon, when Kyle needed to re-tool San Francisco’s roster back in 2017.

Yeah, I have to wonder how much maneuvering ESPN is doing here- they could figure that an imploding ACC is in their favor, scoop best teams for their SEC contract, donate 1 or 2 to Fox/Big 10, and then be able to renegotiate ACC contract more on level of American league pay- or ditch them all together. If ESPN is meddling here, wonder what legal recourse ACC remainders would have? And would NCAA ever have guts to step in and say enough, all conference realignment halted until we figure out football/separate it from the rest of collegiate sports?

Expand full comment

If, in fact, there are at least three ACC schools looking to leave the conference, it calls into question the stability of the conference.

What did we get ourselves into?

Expand full comment

Everybody knew that there were schools looking to leave the ACC. That's why the rest of the conference voted to add more schools, so that their current conference can remain stable (as long as they have at least 15 the ESPN deal remains in place).

Expand full comment

So let's add WSU and OSU.

Expand full comment
author

We'll be fine. Games (but not finances) are net-sum-zero. For some, they end up winning more, which ends up being a upward spiral for their programs - like Clemson and Miami. For others, they don't end up doing well in the new conference - like BC, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse and end up with downward pressure on their programs. Cal is joining the ACC at the right time - Syracuse, BC, VA Tech, Wake Forest, Pitt, UVA, Louisville, and NC State are all very beatable. Duke's Mike Elko has to be a hot commodity now and has to be a target of a bigger program. With FSU, UNC, Miami, and/or Clemson gone and some new invitees entering, Cal could be the Iowa of the West - be very average and yet go 8-4 with Sun Bowl invitation every year.

Expand full comment

My question is less about the strength of Cal's program and much more about the stability and staying power of the ACC. Given that TV networks, not ADs or university presidents, run college football now, what is the long term status of the ACC likely to be?

Expand full comment

I think this is just a bunch of hot air. When Texas/Oklahoma and USC/UCLA left, it was done quietly and only broke once it was a done deal. For them to leave the ACC they would have to pay the exit fees, which is a significant amount of money. ESPN is having financial troubles and bleeding viewership, so I have a hard time believing that they could up with the money for the SEC to add Clemson and FSU. Do you think Clemson and FSU would take a smaller share like Cal/Stanford or even Oregon and UW have? I seriously doubt their pride would allow that.

Expand full comment

Whether it’s hot air or actually has some legs, in the next go around, Cal may find itself on the outside looking in. Unless we sack up and fire Wilcox this year and ACTUALLY invest in football. We were lucky to be invited to the ACC, but if we’re still a doormat program in the next round of contraction/ expansion, we might find ourselves in OSU’s or Wazzu’s shoes.

This ACC move is a gift to Wilcox. Even this year's deeply flawed team would likely be bowl-bound in the ACC (especially if the extra OOC game is used to play a low-level G5 team).
