Well the season is finally over and it ended with a whimper on Sunday afternoon. On a perfect day in Sacramento the A’s dropped their final game of the season to the Kansas City Royals, falling 9-2 and finishing the 2025 season, their first in West Sacramento, with a 76-86 record. An improvement overall but still a long ways to go to contention. Better luck next year, fellas. Now get some well deserved rest this winter and see you all next spring!
The San Francisco Giants took the field on a mission. Not with the unified purpose of other teams like the Cincinnati Reds or New York Mets with a chance to snag a final playoff spot on the final day of the season — no, that ship has long sailed. This group of same-suited players had individual pursuits on their mind. History, meaning could be achieved on the personal level in game 162 of the 2025 season.
After the San Francisco Giants’ final game of the season, it became increasingly clear the team planned to part ways with manager Bob Melvin, who said he’d received no assurances about his job status.
On Monday morning, the Giants let Melvin go after two years at the helm.
It was a disappointing tenure with San Francisco for Melvin, who is from Menlo Park, played for the Giants and managed the A’s to six playoff appearances. Under Melvin, the Giants went 80-82 last year and 81-81 this season, which was president of baseball operations Buster Posey’s first in his new position.
A World Series championship in 2023, and down hill from there. Rangers were a .500 team this year, and on average, he was 4 games above .500 per year for his tenure in Texas. Granted, its Texas, which is a poster boy and case study in MLB mediocrity, but striving for .500 is something the Giants are already quite versed in. I'd rather elevate things by around 9 games a year on a semi-consistent basis.
Recency carries more weight in the analysis. That's one problem MLB in particular is guilty of, resulting in recycling, often without modernization.
The game, and times generally, are changing, and rapidly, and what worked years ago won't work anymore. Granted, some experience is better than the in over their head approach to trying things at random, but it has to be balanced.
The Giants are in the unenviable position of dealing with the Dodgers, who are willing to spend at a rate that generally overcomes most of their mistakes, but that isn't going to change, so something has to change to a) get to September with a legit shot, not a long shot, and b) then be playing their best ball in September and beyond.
Would the Rangers let him go? I know they didn't do well this year. Not sure if it was due to injuries or not. Not sure what his contract status is, but I'd imagine it'd be his decision to leave and the Rangers wouldn't push him out.
Also, even though the Giants failed to make the playoffs, the opportunity was there for the taking. They needed 3 more victories to pass the Reds and the Mets. The Giants peaked at 71-69, with 22 to play. In the next 19 games, their record was 7-12 at the Cardinals (1-2), vs D'backs (2-1), vs Dodgers (1-2), at D'backs (1-2), at Dodgers (1-3), and vs Cardinals (1-2). Too many missed opportunities. Not even a series sweep of the Rockies on the final weekend was any help.
The Mets gave the Giants an opening by also playing poor baseball down the stretch, going 7-12 in the same stretch. The Mets continued to play poorly in their final series, going 1-2 against the Marlins falling into an 83-79 tie with the Reds. Since the Reds owned the tiebreaker with the Mets, the Reds advance to the post-season.
The Giants absolutely could have been the Reds. Getting to the wild card proved surprisingly easy, thanks to the Mets doing Mets things.
Ironically, they might have gotten there if they hadn't traded away their bullpen pieces at the deadline (though I agreed with the decision to do that and it will probably be long-term helpful).
4 consecutive seasons that are the definition of both mediocrity and missed opportunities. The Giants seemingly throw in the towel annually, and this year, even earlier, and earlier than necessary.
I was hoping the front office change would mark a change in course. I didn't really expect it to be in the wrong direction, as it seems to be. If there is more erosion of the talent on hand, it will be very concerning.
As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on Posey as POBO and it will be for a while yet. Farhan got, what, 4 years? 5? I won't call Posey's regime as taking the Giants in the wrong direction...yet.
That 2021 season is so bizarre. Literally the only team that has managed to steal the division crown from LA in a long time, and haven't even gotten close again.
I also feel that that season set the Giants back a bunch of years. They had to give Crawford a contract and more money and they had to go for it all the next season when in actuality, almost everyone played out of their minds and they weren't ever going to replicate that.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan got Christian McCaffrey involved early and often on the first drive with six touches. The ground game looked good early. Brock Purdy began the drive with an 18-yard pass to Kyle Juszczyk. However, a 13-play drive stalled in the red zone, and the Niners had to settle for a field goal.
I'm not sure that bringing Purdy back as quickly as the 49ers did was a wise idea. It has the feeling of being rushed and influenced by Jones' injury the week before.
A weird game ended up being a brutal, brutal defeat for the Las Vegas Raiders.
In the end, the Raiders left Allegiant Stadium stunned after a 25-24 loss to the underwhelming Chicago Bears after a 54-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Carlson was blocked in the final seconds.
Clayton Kershaw struck out seven and pitched scoreless baseball into the sixth inning in the final regular season start of his major league career, in the Dodgers’ 6-1 win over the Mariners on Sunday in Seattle to close out the regular season.
BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team captured three titles Sunday at the Cal Fall Invitational, with Greta Greco Lucchina and Millie Johanna Moerk winning the top-flight doubles final in the morning and then – after a long rain delay – each claiming a singles title in the afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
BERKELEY – The California women's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with visiting Boston College on Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears have now collected three straight shutouts for the first time since 2022 and have come away with a result in nine consecutive matches.
BERKELEY - The California field hockey team got back into the win column with a decisive 4-1 victory over UC Davis at Underhill Field on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears (4-5, 0-3 ACC) were powered by Olivia Sharratt and Zara Schmitz who both found the back of the net twice in the contest. The Aggies' (4-5) lone goal came late in the fourth period with the game already decided.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The California volleyball team posted its second-straight win Sunday afternoon, dropping just one set at John Paul Jones Arena against a tough Virginia squad to improve to 5-7 on the year and 2-0 in ACC play. The Golden Bears held the Cavaliers (7-5, 0-2) to their lowest hitting percentage of the season (.016) in the win, posting set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 17-25 and 25-15.
The California women's golf team continues a busy stretch to its fall season as it heads to the Molly Collegiate Invitational in Corvallis, Oregon, this week at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
After hosting the past four editions of The Molly at Bayonet & Black Horse in Seaside, the tournament moves to the Pacific Northwest this year. The event has been kind to the Golden Bears in recent seasons, as they've had a top-2 finish in each of the last two years - including a school record 28-under par 836 in 2023 to tie for the tournament championship. Last year, Cal finished second out of the 11 teams competing.
BERKELEY – California women's tennis sophomore Greta Greco Lucchina won once in top-flight singles and twice in top-flight doubles Saturday to advance to both Sunday finals at the Cal Fall Invitational. The Golden Bear and partner Mille Johanna Moerk play in the doubles final at 9 a.m. PT, with Greco Lucchina slated to play the singles final at 10:30 a.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
CARSON – The California rugby team commenced its fall sevens season Saturday, with its top side winning the championship with a perfect run through the West Coast 7s Los Angeles at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Golden Bears rolled into the championship game with victories over San Diego State (29-7), Western Washington (27-0) and Long Beach State (34-10). That set up a showdown with UCLA, and Cal breezed past the Bruins, 37-0.
BERKELEY – The No. 2 California men's water polo team (11-1) clinched its 11th win of the season, matching last season's win total, after defeating No. 11 Pepperdine (8-5), 14-12, in a back-and-forth contest at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team created its share of chances in Saturday's ACC clash with Syracuse at Edwards Stadium, forcing seven saves out of the Orange goalkeeper. Yet the Golden Bears ended the match with a 2-0 loss.
Great to see you all this weekend! And relieved that D-Honey's first Cal game was such an exciting win -- in the first quarter it looked like it might also be her last
Boston
The folks in BC were quite polite. Met a few alumni and parents of students, but no locals who had adopted the Eagles. In a way, BC seems to share some similar advantages/disadvantages as Berkeley.
In other words, no townies, which might be typical for Boston.
Lived there fora year, absolutely loved it. Would have stayed but for a woman who lured me back to California. Glad she did, we've been married for decades.
Natives pronounce “career” as “Korea” and vice versa.
you run through Chestnut Hill as part of the Boston Marathon.
I remember it from long ago.

Giants avoid a third consecutive losing season by riding the individual accomplishments of Adames, Devers, and Webb

Giants part with manager Bob Melvin, Buster Posey to pick new skipper
https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/giants-part-manager-bob-melvin-buster-posey-pick-21073324.php
After the San Francisco Giants’ final game of the season, it became increasingly clear the team planned to part ways with manager Bob Melvin, who said he’d received no assurances about his job status.

Under Melvin, the Giants went 80-82 last year and 81-81 this season, which was president of baseball operations Buster Posey’s first in his new position.
Not for nothing, there will be speculation about bringing back Bruce Bochy. Bochy, you may recall was summarily let go by Farhan Zaidi.
Bochy has proven he can beat his with yours and yours with his. He did that when he managed the Rangers to a World Series championship in 2023.
I’ll take Bochy’s steady hand any day. He just knows how to win.
Also, your analysis is flawed in that it doesn’t acknowledge his overall record and it doesn’t acknowledge his lengthy tenure as a manager.

They already did.
Who knows what the Rangers would do? Quite frankly, they'd be foolish to let Bochy go if he still wants to manage a ballclub.
I don't think they would. I was just thinking if the Giants wanted Bochy back the Rangers would have to not want him.
Also, even though the Giants failed to make the playoffs, the opportunity was there for the taking. They needed 3 more victories to pass the Reds and the Mets. The Giants peaked at 71-69, with 22 to play. The 2025 Giants finished 81-81. Not much different than the previous three seasons -
2024: 80-82 (4th, NL West) Bob Melvin
2023: 79-83 (4th, NL West) Gabe Kapler, Kai Correa
2022: 81-81 (3rd, NL West) Gabe Kapler
2021 was the franchise record-setting 107-55 squad, 1st in the NL West.
4 consecutive seasons that are the definition of both mediocrity and missed opportunities. The Giants seemingly throw in the towel annually, and this year, even earlier, and earlier than necessary.
There's also been a big change in the front office prior to this season. 2025 looks like a hangover from the previous regime... so far.

A lot of it was about the old guard of Posey, Crawford, and Belt having their "last hurrah" seasons, yeah.
Mets implode and miss the playoffs. Assterisks miss the playoffs. Just needed the Yankees to also miss the playoffs.

I'm not sure that bringing Purdy back as quickly as the 49ers did was a wise idea. It has the feeling of being rushed and influenced by Jones' injury the week before.

Good to meet D-Honey. She's a peach. I'm glad you found a Bernadette for your inner Howard.

Funny thing is I don't think I actually have one right now. So not sure what I actually had.
