The folks in BC were quite polite. Met a few alumni and parents of students, but no locals who had adopted the Eagles. In a way, BC seems to share some similar advantages/disadvantages as Berkeley.

"We Live In Time" (15/19, airplane, WB). It's an A24 produced romantic-drama. One of the protagonists is a chef, so I was in. It's a non-linear told-story about love, loss, sacrifice, and memory. It hit me in the feels and felt like it was created just for me. I've twice been falsely diagnosed with terminal disease. Both my parents had cancer. I know that I'm not getting out of my story arc alive, so I've been contemplating my own love, life, and legacy before the rug gets pulled out from underneath my feet. If you're ready to bear a bit of heartache, this one is good.

We were hoping that the two shooters over the weekend weren't antifa-aligned. They both turned out to be ex-military. One of them shot up the Southport bar/restaurant next to the one I ate at two Friday's ago and the person I ate lunch with knew the person. Actually, apparently everyone knew him since it's such a small town and they had no idea he had that in him. The Mormon church one shot a friend of my wife's colleague. He's in an induced coma fighting for his life. He was shot in front of his son. This country is hurting.

Horrible. I wonder, are there folks on here who DON'T have some kind of connection to a mass shooting anymore? Many of us started early in that sad category due to the terrifying Henry's shooting and hostage event, but I continue to know other folks impacted nationwide by lunatics with guns, including Oxford Michigan and Chapel Hill NC back in the 90s, and more recently the Minneapolis school chapel shooting. Citizens of other countries often have to stretch to say they even know a gun owner let alone a gun victim. This country is hurting indeed.

A’s Drop Season Finale 9-2 to Royals

https://www.athleticsnation.com/recaps/100525/as-drop-season-finale-9-2-to-royals

Well the season is finally over and it ended with a whimper on Sunday afternoon. On a perfect day in Sacramento the A’s dropped their final game of the season to the Kansas City Royals, falling 9-2 and finishing the 2025 season, their first in West Sacramento, with a 76-86 record. An improvement overall but still a long ways to go to contention. Better luck next year, fellas. Now get some well deserved rest this winter and see you all next spring!

81 - 81 (Giants sweep the Rockies)

Giants avoid a third consecutive losing season by riding the individual accomplishments of Adames, Devers, and Webb

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings-nl-west/101277/willy-adames-logan-webb-rafael-devers-rockies-81-81

The San Francisco Giants took the field on a mission. Not with the unified purpose of other teams like the Cincinnati Reds or New York Mets with a chance to snag a final playoff spot on the final day of the season — no, that ship has long sailed. This group of same-suited players had individual pursuits on their mind. History, meaning could be achieved on the personal level in game 162 of the 2025 season.

Giants part with manager Bob Melvin, Buster Posey to pick new skipper

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/giants-part-manager-bob-melvin-buster-posey-pick-21073324.php

After the San Francisco Giants’ final game of the season, it became increasingly clear the team planned to part ways with manager Bob Melvin, who said he’d received no assurances about his job status.

On Monday morning, the Giants let Melvin go after two years at the helm.

It was a disappointing tenure with San Francisco for Melvin, who is from Menlo Park, played for the Giants and managed the A’s to six playoff appearances. Under Melvin, the Giants went 80-82 last year and 81-81 this season, which was president of baseball operations Buster Posey’s first in his new position.

Not for nothing, there will be speculation about bringing back Bruce Bochy. Bochy, you may recall was summarily let go by Farhan Zaidi.

Bochy has proven he can beat his with yours and yours with his. He did that when he managed the Rangers to a World Series championship in 2023.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

A World Series championship in 2023, and down hill from there. Rangers were a .500 team this year, and on average, he was 4 games above .500 per year for his tenure in Texas. Granted, its Texas, which is a poster boy and case study in MLB mediocrity, but striving for .500 is something the Giants are already quite versed in. I'd rather elevate things by around 9 games a year on a semi-consistent basis.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

I’ll take Bochy’s steady hand any day. He just knows how to win.

Also, your analysis is flawed in that it doesn’t acknowledge his overall record and it doesn’t acknowledge his lengthy tenure as a manager.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

Recency carries more weight in the analysis. That's one problem MLB in particular is guilty of, resulting in recycling, often without modernization.

The game, and times generally, are changing, and rapidly, and what worked years ago won't work anymore. Granted, some experience is better than the in over their head approach to trying things at random, but it has to be balanced.

The Giants are in the unenviable position of dealing with the Dodgers, who are willing to spend at a rate that generally overcomes most of their mistakes, but that isn't going to change, so something has to change to a) get to September with a legit shot, not a long shot, and b) then be playing their best ball in September and beyond.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

Would the Rangers let him go? I know they didn't do well this year. Not sure if it was due to injuries or not. Not sure what his contract status is, but I'd imagine it'd be his decision to leave and the Rangers wouldn't push him out.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

They already did.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

Who knows what the Rangers would do? Quite frankly, they'd be foolish to let Bochy go if he still wants to manage a ballclub.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't think they would. I was just thinking if the Giants wanted Bochy back the Rangers would have to not want him.

Also, even though the Giants failed to make the playoffs, the opportunity was there for the taking. They needed 3 more victories to pass the Reds and the Mets. The Giants peaked at 71-69, with 22 to play. In the next 19 games, their record was 7-12 at the Cardinals (1-2), vs D'backs (2-1), vs Dodgers (1-2), at D'backs (1-2), at Dodgers (1-3), and vs Cardinals (1-2). Too many missed opportunities. Not even a series sweep of the Rockies on the final weekend was any help.

The Mets gave the Giants an opening by also playing poor baseball down the stretch, going 7-12 in the same stretch. The Mets continued to play poorly in their final series, going 1-2 against the Marlins falling into an 83-79 tie with the Reds. Since the Reds owned the tiebreaker with the Mets, the Reds advance to the post-season.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

The Giants absolutely could have been the Reds. Getting to the wild card proved surprisingly easy, thanks to the Mets doing Mets things.

Ironically, they might have gotten there if they hadn't traded away their bullpen pieces at the deadline (though I agreed with the decision to do that and it will probably be long-term helpful).

The 2025 Giants finished 81-81. Not much different than the previous three seasons -

2024: 80-82 (4th, NL West) Bob Melvin

2023: 79-83 (4th, NL West) Gabe Kapler, Kai Correa

2022: 81-81 (3rd, NL West) Gabe Kapler

2021 was the franchise record-setting 107-55 squad, 1st in the NL West.

4 consecutive seasons that are the definition of both mediocrity and missed opportunities. The Giants seemingly throw in the towel annually, and this year, even earlier, and earlier than necessary.

Expand full comment

There's also been a big change in the front office prior to this season. 2025 looks like a hangover from the previous regime... so far.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

I was hoping the front office change would mark a change in course. I didn't really expect it to be in the wrong direction, as it seems to be. If there is more erosion of the talent on hand, it will be very concerning.

FiatSlug's avatar

As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on Posey as POBO and it will be for a while yet. Farhan got, what, 4 years? 5? I won't call Posey's regime as taking the Giants in the wrong direction...yet.

49ers, Brock Purdy, commit a comedy of errors in their loss to the Jaguars

https://www.ninersnation.com/san-francisco-49ers-news/150827/49ers-brock-purdy-commit-a-comedy-of-errors-in-their-loss-to-the-jaguars

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan got Christian McCaffrey involved early and often on the first drive with six touches. The ground game looked good early. Brock Purdy began the drive with an 18-yard pass to Kyle Juszczyk. However, a 13-play drive stalled in the red zone, and the Niners had to settle for a field goal.
